Say what msc? Spike Lee has done some terrible movies (She Hate Me, Get on the Bus, Crooklyn), but there's nothing wrong with X, Inside Man or the documentary 4 Little Girls.
I figured people would throw Malcom X back at me. Personally, I didn't enjoy that one, but it obviously made an impact on our society so kudos to him for that one. Your list of his terrible movies is way too short though, jn. Have you ever seen Girl 6, Jungle Fever, Crooklyn, or Clockers? Unwatchable, IMO. I guess the Kings of Comedy was great, but I attribute that more to the comedians in the film, not Lee's directing or creative vision.
This guy has the rep of being a brilliant film maker, but when I watch a film like Shawshank Redemption or No Country for Old Men and then I watch a Spike Lee film, the Spike Lee joint looks like the work of an average NYU film student in comparison. Just my opinion, but I never "got" the buzz with him.
I agree with WOW, those Mars Blackman commercials were the pinnacle of his career.
As far as a documentary about a day in the life of Kobe, I'm luke warm on it. I thoroughly enjoy watching the amazing talent Kobe displays on an almost nightly basis on the basketball court, but I don't really need to re-hash one day and a game last season. The only aspect of the documentary that would be appealing to me is the behind the scenes footage in the locker room and what not. I always get a kick out of that type of footage. For example, I love the Hard Knocks documentary on HBO. I'm not a Chiefs fan, and I loath the Cowboys, but I really enjoy that documentary and think they do a fantastic job of showing the behind the scenes reality of a NFL training camp. The show humanizes the players and it draws you in to their lives. You find yourself pulling for the kids trying to make the cut. If Lee can somehow incorporate that type of real life drama in to the documentary it would be interesting to me. If it's just a Kobe wank-fest ... not so much. Personally, I'd rather use those two hours of my life watching the next Laker playoff game.
