Apple hasn't innovate much (though you could argue the itunes store is an innovation and the iphone is an innovation), however they have maybe perfected other ideas better than anyone else...they didn't invent the MP3 player, but they may have perfected and improved it in a way that other companies didn't (or would have?) due to the culture of the company.

Jobs believes it himself - good artists copy - great ones steal - Microsoft and apple BOTH stole from xerox to get their big boost (god Xerox, a boondoggle of epic proportions), and yes some apple evangelists border on scary zealotry.  My first 'real' pc (if you don't count the Commodore 64 with the cassette drive) was an Apple IIGS, so I've been using Apples since i was about 10.  I use both Apples and PCs, I see the strengths and weaknesses of both, but if I'm Microsoft, I don't worry about Apple, I worry about linux and open source, a much bigger (and easier to obtain for many) threat to my global domination.

I'd say moving to a *nix based operating system is innovative for a consumer operating system that has a solid market share....

I'd worry about Apple before Linux for two reasons (on the consumer desktop):

1) Linux is still much more challenging then Leopard/Windows

2) There is so many distributions of Linux that it's much harder for the average user to focus in on one linux distro.

Apple has done nothing but repackage the Alto.  Machintosh was a repackaged Alto as is the IPhone and ITouch.  Creative Labs is the leader in the MP3 market, Apple is just better at marketing thier player and the ease of use of ITunes has a lot do do with it.  IMO the Zune is the superior product in MP3 players, only the touch screen makes ITouch "cooler" to have.  ITunes was not an innovation, it was just Napster with a method of collecting payment.  If you want to call making money of someone elses idea an innovation then so be it, it has happened in many other industries, heck just look at Rock N Roll.

I learned to program on TSR-80's, Vic 20's, Apple II C/E/, Macintosh and a teletype.  My first computer was an 64 as well, I had the disk drive cause the tape drives drove me crazy at school.  I had a TV instead of the cool monitor everyone else had.  I didn't grow up with anything against Apple, in fact getting on a Apple in computer lab was considered a major bonus cause they were much better machines.  You either had to get to lab early or kiss enough arse to get preferential treatment.  I was one of the better programmers and my reward was getting to work on the teletype machine every day.    It wasn't until I got into the more advanced programming methods that I figured out why I was put on the teletype machine, there was this "thingy" called the internet that the teletype could get on.  Kinda a neat thing back in 1986, but I just used it for testing, didn't realize at the time the wealth of porn that was at my fingertips (IMO that was as huge a computer blunder as Xerox PARC giving away the Alto).

So I went from that eviroment to a 286 and it was quite and eye opener.  I have many friends in the printing industry, I spent a lot of time in print shop durring HS, so I get an almost weekly exposure/update to the coolest thing "Mac".  I've also worked with HMI companies that showcase their software on Silicon Graphics workstations, you want to talk about a leap, compare the most powerful Mac to an entry level SI WS and it's like watching that one-eyebrow girl from the Peanuts commercial standing next to Angelina Jolee.  Obviously the cost difference is a major factor but IMO so is the cost difference between a Mac and PC.

Well yeah, who wouldn't want a silicon graphics puter on their desktop or one of them their new fangled 'cray desktops' - but who has that kind of cash.  Yes, Low End PCs are cheaper than Macs, but you also get what you pay for, low end, in my opinion, comparable machines (purely computer, not monitor) in terms of performance and power and such will cost about the same.  PC market benefits from having a lot of suppliers in a few industries, as opposed to Apple being monolithic, but I sitll think a quality PC isn't that cheap, unless you want to build it yourself (and i've never figured that part out yet)

Monitors are an entirely different story, I've never examined 'display/HD' monitors equivalent to what mac provides, because i know i can't afford either.

And yes, there's a style over substance thing for the Mac, a 'cool factor' - but that's the United States and capitalism, crap like that sells   Marketing DOES matter, and the 'best' doesn't always win, just ask the betamax, and who knows if blu-ray is truly 'better' than HD-DVD, they just got all the movie industries, thus sinking HD-DVD not on the merits of technology but on the marketability/future distribution possibilities.

And yes, xerox should be totally ashamed, dealers of lightening is just an excellent 'lay person' read on how xerox screwed up basically 'ruling the world'

Hey, in 1994 i established the idea for ebay using usenet and email cause I needed money to move to california and M:TG cards had a lot of value.

This is part of that whole android thing right?  The "Gphone" didn't get such hot reviews when they previewed it a couple weeks ago...does google have a partnership with a phone company or is it going to be for any service?

It's going to be for any network as the OS is suppose to be wide open.  T-Mobile will have the first phone but all other carriers are suppose to carry them as well.  The handset makers all will make phones using it I am assuming so any carrier should have it.  Tho Apple will most likely flex to keep AT&T from getting it.

The Google Android OS looks cool and they have a bunch of cool apps for it already but since its not the IPHONE its going to get negative reviews.

No, it's going to be compared to the iPhone, and if it suffers in comparison, that's not Apples fault.  So it's not a phone but an operating system, so again, not really a comparison to the iphone?
