YOU GO BILL COSBY!

CBS/AP) Bill Cosby is not backing down.

The entertainer, who has long been proud of both his show biz achievements and his doctorate in education, is again urging the black community to do a better job helping themselves and their children.

Speaking in Chicago Thursday, Cosby told room full of activists that black children are running around not knowing how to read or write and "going nowhere."

He also had harsh words for struggling black men, telling them: "Stop beating up your women because you can't find a job."

Cosby spoke in Chicago at the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund.

Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder and president of the education fund, stood side by side with Cosby and defended his statements.

"Bill is saying let's fight the right fight, let's level the playing field," Jackson said. "Drunk people can't do that. Illiterate people can't do that."

Cosby made headlines in May when he upbraided some poor blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them. He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry."

"Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said Thursday.

"They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere."

He was clearly picking up where he left off on May 17th, when he addressed a Constitution Hall ceremony in Washington, D.C., celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision. Cosby at that time denounced some blacks' grammar and said those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars "are not political prisoners."

"I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby told the dignitaries at the Washington ceremony, including NAACP President Kweisi Mfume. "And then I heard the father talk ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."

Speaking at the Rainbow/PUSH event Thursday, Cosby's comments were several times interrupted by applause. He castigated some blacks, saying that they cannot simply blame whites for problems such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates.

"For me there is a time ... when we have to turn the mirror around," he said. "Because for me it is almost analgesic to talk about what the white man is doing against us. And it keeps a person frozen in their seat, it keeps you frozen in your hole you're sitting in."

Cosby lamented that the racial slurs once used by those who lynched blacks are now a favorite expression of black children. And he blamed parents.

"When you put on a record and that record is yelling 'n------ this and n------ that' and you've got your little 6-year-old, 7-year-old sitting in the back seat of the car, those children hear that," he said.

He also condemned black men who missed out on opportunities and are now angry about their lives.

"You've got to stop beating up your women because you can't find a job, because you didn't want to get an education and now you're (earning) minimum wage," Cosby said. "You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school

I agree with Bill 100%, his statement apply to ALL races IMO!  Go Bill, it's time for SOMEBODY to bring this to the surface...

WOW.  Someone lecturing on personal responsibility other than me.  Get 'em, Bill.  But don't stop there.  Let's talk about the personal appearance of teenagers today - black and white - wearing pants that sag, as if they can't afford things that fit, the rich white kids trying to play "ghetto" because they think it's cool...when there are people out there who CANNOT afford clothes that fit, or DESPERATELY LONG to get out of the ghetto, but don't have the money.

"Look at me;  I can make myself suffer!" is a losing mentality that glorifies making yourself into a victim.  It only pushes the folks out there who would care about those in need further toward apathy;  they start looking at *ALL* suffering as unconcerned selfish attention-seeking.

Good job, Bill.

WoW, put down the hunk of gov't cheese you're gnawing on and respond to what Cosby actually said. Does it have merit?

Besides, we all know that all of his supposed illegitimate children (in a language you can understand: bastards) are not really his children. They are money-grubbing opportunists who have been shown to be unrelated to Cosby.

Actually, I don't know that for truth. I just wanted to see what it felt like to marry myself to a completely unsubstantiated statement . . . it's not all you make it out to be WoW.

I think we should take it easy on WoW. The last four years of Bush have been really hard on the man. I mean, he's only got two houses in SoCal, which the FBI raid almost monthly without search warrants thanks to that damn Patriot Act that traitor bush and his SS Field Marshall Ashcroft. Sure he's thinking of buying another house, but if it weren't for friggin Bush, he'd have ten houses right now. If it weren't for his "willing-to-settle" wife and four(?) prodigies-in-the-making children, WoW would have gone off on this unfair world like a 500 megaton H-bomb long ago.

The injustice this world has heaped on WoW is staggering. I mean, the guy can only lose a Grand in poker once a week! If we had someone other than Bush in office, he'd be able to hemorrhage as much cash as he'd like, (all the while complaining about all of the people close to him who suffer poverty because of . . . well . . . whoever pissed him off last), which is the way a life in a free, advanced society should be!!

So I think it's time we lay off the guy. Life is just hard for some people.

Hypocritical or not, Bill is right on the target with his criticism.

We live in a very twisted society where people are appreciated for things that have nothing to do with reality.  I find it disturbing that children are dreaming of becoming sports heroes or rap stars, instead of Scientists, Physicists, Doctors, Engineers, Writers, Mathematicians and the like.

Why do children want to emulate the most dysfunctional members of society, instead of the productive ones?  Why are they so brain dead?  Why aren't their parents concerned about their values and doing something to see their influenced properly?

Dads and Moms are just as bad if not worse.  They spend an inordinate amount of time  trying to get their kids athletic scholarships- doing everything they can to give their kids an edge in sports, including acting like idiots in the stands getting into fights with each other and the referees.  Never mind making sure their children learn to read and write and actually think for themselves!

IMO, we're a dysfunctional society getting worse and worse all the time.  There are no intellectual debates anymore, there isn't even politeness.  Ther debates are an attempt to drown out the opponent by talking over him, as oppossed to winning on a logical level.

All anyone seems to want anymore is to get innordinately rich so they can tell everyone else to screw off.  There's no honor or respect for capable productive people.  Our heroes are sports figures and movie stars, not the people who are advancing technology or our understanding of the world.

Republicans talk about morals and values, and they are sorely lacking in them.  Bush  lies about how well the country is doing and acts irresponsibly with taxpayes money- financing wars instead of job programs, and increasing the budget deficit, by tax giveaways to the rich, who don't need it.

And why does this happen?  Because we the people are too selfish and stupid to understand how important it is to a society that we think about each other and care enough to act responsbly and do the right thing.

And WOW, are you so ignorant that you have to resort to profanity and foul language to make a point? Your behavior is making mine for me.

I looked this up after WOW's post.  Her name is Autumn Jackson. Cosby had an affair with with her mother and paid approx $40,000 a year.  When the story broke it was because she threatened to expose the affair if she didn't receive $25 million.  When push came to shove Cosby agreed to take a paternity test and Jackson declined.

Make of that what you will.

P.S. There are lots of other public figues who have said much the same thing.  For instance  nationally syndicated columnists Stanley Crouch (who is very blunt about it) and Leonard Pitts and Clarence Paige, who are a little more subtle.  Heck, Spike Lee has repeatedly publicly ripped black people for thinking getting an education is selling out.

Actually, I wouldn't get bothered if YOU lectured me on child rearing.  There is something to be said about the THEORY of god and religion.  It's the "practice" that's so F'd up.  My kids are pretty good kids because they have a very strong moral foundation that comes from my wife and her beliefs.  When it's time to hit the REAL world, the world of adults, MY "teachings" will be invaluable.

Regarding that blowhard Cosby, I just can't stand hypocrites.  The Cosby booty calls are enough for me to tell him to STFU about morals.

Child!

Don't lecture me about morals when you're busy banging women who aren't your wives then getting dragged into court for failure to provide child support.

Why don't you goto a Dubya Bush lecture about honesty and integrity as a public servant pendejo!

WoW, I would never presume to lecture you on child rearing. You've got four, I've got one, and he's only 15 months. I've got a lot to learn.

And besides, I'm almost totally convinced that your online persona is a complete fabrication. I'll bet in real life you're a 6'5" 200 lb perimeter player with deep abiding faith in Jesus Christ and a strong belief in Conservative values . . . wait a minute! . . . unsubstantiated claims CAN be fun!!
