Well, we should be talking basketball.
« on: November 06, 2011, 10:47:28 AM »
Just thought we should note the passing of what should have been the start of the season.  It seems like the reaction has been rather muted among fans and reporters.   On the one hand, that's understandable because everyone has known a lockout was likely.

On the other hand, I still think it's a very bad sign for the league that people seem to care so little.  I don't foresee a huge outpouring of excitement once the games start again.

Agreed, I don't miss the game at all. I really wanted to see how LeFraud and company would react. I would also like to see if the Lakers and Celtics retool their squads, or in the case of the Celtics and Magic, would they blow up/rebuild. Then again, I don't find myself thinking about it muc.

Poll shows 76% of Americans don't miss NBA

I'm not familiar with the company Poll Position but i have no reason to doubt this 76% figure.

Not at my fingertips, but isn't the figure for NBA players retired for 5 years plus and bankrupt above 50%?
Normally I'm on the players side vs the corporations, but when you have the owners saying they will continue guaranteed contracts (Juwan Howard 100+ million, Mike Dunleavy Jr. 10 million a year, Matt Bonner 3.3 a year contrasted with Derrek Rose being stuck with 4 or 5 mil a year while he makes the owners mega millions, the system is whack.  And give the union around 50% of the cut (49-50-51 ppsssssh does it really matter when the ave salary is 5 million?).
I have read nothing about the union trying to correct the rookie scale so it's immediate superstars can get compensated.  Meet somewhere in the middle between the NFLs ridiculous rookie guarantees (25 million for someone who has never been in one play) vs the Derrek Rose situation (made not all that much more then Matty Bonner the last three seasons 15 mil vs 10 mil).
