Chicago and the Cubbies
« on: August 30, 2010, 11:42:01 AM »
Finally saw a Cubs game a week ago Sunday, at Wrigley. It was Sweet Lou's final game, in which the Cubbies lost 16-5 to Atlanta. Still....enjoyed the game immensely. Got a "first-time" to Wrigley certificate and the striped shirt and the cap. Baseball from the 1930's.....

Loved Chicago as well. Walked the Millenium Park, did the top of the Sears (now Willis Tower, though no TRUE CHICAGOAN ever calls it that), road the "L" all over, ate a deep dish (not my favorite), hung out at old bars, like Poag Mahone's and Miller's Pub (a favorite) in the Loop, did an architectural Chicago River boat tour, the Navy Yard, the Field Museum, and a quirky gangster tour of the mob hits of the past. Plan on returning.

Plenty. Poag's had the best, which they brew there. But honestly, they do not measure up to Anchor Steam.

I am planning on going out there to visit a friend next summer for two weeks so I will keep this in mind.

You know, guys, if you're going to be in the Chicago area over the weekend sometime, let me know in advance, and I might try to meet you up there.  Chicago is a fun get-away weekend for me.  And ABSOLUTELY, if you're ANYWHERE in Missouri, let me know.

A few of things I highly recommend in Chicago:

Second City comedy:  improvisational comedy.  Great stuff.
     Deep-dish pizza at Giordano's or Pequad's.  I prefer Giordano's;  Skander prefers Pequad's.
Breakfast buffet at the Hyatt Regency on Wacker Drive (near Navy Pier).  Phenomenal selection.  Do this of the morning, and you'll be stuffed until the evening (when you can do the above-mentioned pizza).
Lakeshore Drive.  An absolute must-see road.  Incredible scenery.

I've always wanted to see a game at Wrigley and a game at Fenway.  Need to put those on my short list of "things to do."

I'm actually headed to Milwaukee this weekend for the Scottish Highland games.  I help a friend out with setting up sound systems, and then I sit back and listen
to good music for the rest of the weekend.

This might sound a bit over the top but I had a friend recently come back from there with pizzas from this Taste Of Chicago spot ( not sure if you heard of it ) that were so good that I went to the website to have them overnight me pizzas.  Ill assume Giorandos is better though!

If I am out there I will def give you a buzz.  My friend will be busy a few days while I am there so I figured I'd be solo walking around.  Would help to grab a bite/beers and talk ball for a bit.

You'll need to give me a bit of notice, since Columbia, MO is about 7 hours from Chicago, but like I said, Chicago's a fun trip for me.

We had plenty of recommendations for deep dish while in Chicago. We went to Pizzeria Uno, but Giordano's was also recommended - by a Cubs fan and his mother when we were at Wrigley. We solicited suggestions from all around us while watching the game.

Wrigley Field recommendation - Spicy Italian Sausage. Not recommended - Old Style Beer).

Poag Mahone's recommendation - whatever is on draft for the beer; the chile; the Chicago Stockyard Burger and the BBQ pulled pork sandwich. Not recommended - going there for lunch during the week.

Deep Dish - not recommended unless Pizzeria Uno just is not representative of it. Had to wait for an hour to be seated. Since the pizza takes almost an hour to cook, they asked us to order at the time they took our names for a table. Little time to really peruse the menu or know how big a pizza to get. The small for two people (and one of those people was ME) was plenty large enough. Supposed to be the originator of deep dish, but it seems Giordano's has gotten more votes here and by our friends from Chicago as well, who could not make it the night we went. Might have made a difference.

Dinner recommendation - Berghoffs German Restaurant had the look of old Chicago about it, but at 8:30 Saturday night, they had run out of Jagerschnitzel and the Sauerbraten, so I settled for the Wiener Schnitzel. Still recommend it, but what was up with them running out of my first two choices? Great ...and I mean GREAT ....bread!

Miller's Pub recommendation - beer was okay, nothing to remember. Canadian Baby-Back ribs were very good; also was informed by others at my table the chicken marsala was good, and the seafood dishes.

Thinking about making an annual trip to Chicago, maybe during the Taste of Chicago event that takes place the two weeks leading up to the Fourth of July. Wife does not, however, want to go when that crowded. Have a cousin up in Wisconsin who also was po'ed I did not tell her I was coming. Looking like a big crowd will be there now, huh?

Old Style?!  There is no emoticon to express my surprise and dismay that you were reduce to drinking Old Swill.   I'm currently dating a woman from LaCrosse, WI.  I can only try and help her work through the shame of being from the source of that abominable brew.

This thread reminds me that I need to get to Chicago more.  It's not hard to get there from Mpls, I loved the trip I did make and I have friends there.  Yet I never make it happen.

I ended up staying in an area that was originally Swedish and now has a large middle eastern population.   Had some great Swedish baked goods and a great Persian dinner.  I could spend a couple weeks just perusing the art galleries downtown.

I also happened to see the Polish Pride Parade downtown.   I couldn't help but laugh at the fact that some participants really looked the part of the characters from the old "Da Bears" sketch with their Big tinted sunglasses, broom bristle mustaches and big beer bellies.

I grew up there, and I go for business at least three times a year. Here are the things I have to have each time I go:

Pizza: Lou Malnati's. Giordano's is good too. But compared to Lou's, Geno's, Uno, and the others are cowpies with tomato sauce. Never tried Pequod's.

Italian Beef: Al's

Hot Dogs: Super Dawg

Steak: Gene & Georgetti's or Morton's (the original).

Ribs: Carson's (These are my favorite ribs in the world. And I've had them in KC, Memphis, and StL.)

Best Wedge Salad: Joe's Prime Steak, Seafood, and Stone Crab (Sorry. I love wedge salads)

Places to avoid: Ed Debevik's, Portillo's

Lou Malnati's is where I ordered those pizzas from.

Again, you guys might think I am crazy for having pizzas from Chicago thrown in with dry ice and shipped to CA but they are amazing!

Lou Malnati's is now my favorite pizza in Chicago.

When I made my first trip with Joe there, we went to Giordano's, and it was excellent.

A few years ago, I made a trip with some friends, and one of the guys at our hotel said Giordano's doesn't compare to Malnati's.  So we went there and I was blown away.

Best pizza I've ever had.  Honestly.

Pizzaria Uno is good pizza, but not really in true Chicago style.  Pequad's or Giordano's.

If you go during "Taste of Chicago," let Skander know, as he and his wife have gone up for that in times past.  He might have some insight (and might want to go again, if he were getting to meet folks from here).

You and me both.  It is so good that I don't mind paying an arm and a leg for some pizzas.  Not all pizzas are created equal that is for sure.
