Phillies get Cole Hamels for peanuts
« on: January 17, 2009, 05:18:29 PM »
3 more years.
$4.35 million this year
$6.65 million in 2010
$9.5 million in 2011.

Unreal.  He is worth as much as any pitcher in MLB right now.

Except he was arbitration eligible those 3 years, so he would not ave made any more than what he signed for.

Good news either way.

He might have given up a little potential money, but he now has security and did not give up any years of FA.  The team has cost certainty for the next three years and does not have to worry about any divisive arb hearings with Cole.  Excellent news all around.

What is the rule that limited Hamels from getting Santana, Peavy, CC SabYankian, type money? (per year, not necc length of years of the contract).

He doesnt even crack the top 15 per year for pitchers, does he?
Top 20?

Arbitration eligible pitchers do not get free market prices.

Jake Peavy was arb eligible and still got 12 or so per year.
Expand.

I do not think you are correct about Peavy.  He might have signed when he was still under arbitration, but the deal extended beyond his arbitration eleigble years- which is not the case for Cole.  I'm sure someone more knowledgable can fill in the details.

The better analogy was Dontrell Willis, who got about 4M in arbitration despite being a dominant pitcher.

Jake Peavy contract history:
2003   San Diego Padres   $305,000
2004   San Diego Padres   $350,000
2005   San Diego Padres   $750,000
2006   San Diego Padres   $2,500,000
2007   San Diego Padres   $4,750,000
2008   San Diego Padres   $6,500,000

In Dec. 2007 he signed a 4 year extension worth $52 million which kicks in this year.

The 2006 contract was his first contract signed.  That was a comparable situation as Hamels, as it was essentially buying out his remaining arbitration years.  His 3 years he got under that contract that replaced his arb deals was 2.5, 4.75 and 6.5 million, which is less in all 3 years than Hamels got.

He did not get a $12 mil deal while he still had arb eligible years.  He got less $ for his arb years than Hamels will.

Arb eligible sounds like a rip off for players like Peavy and Hamels.
Supposing Hamels blows out an elbow this spring.
I thought the MLB Players Association was all about getting maximum bucks.

I suppose I'll have to read the site. ;)
