NBA PG inventory
« on: December 09, 2008, 03:49:50 PM »
I did a similar thread to this last year looking expansively at the PF's around the league to gauge who we might be missing as we discussed filling that gaping void last year.  Here is an inventory list of PG's presently playing for or previously drafted by NBA teams.  I removed very old guys like Cassell, burnouts like Steve Francis and truly unattainable superstars in their prime.  I left most of the young guys in there.  Memphis and Portland both still have a load of guys that play the position and might be desirable, but who out there might be sleepers or available in a trade that you would want.  Some are established players, some might be considered more SG than PG.  Here they are (from the Atlantic to Pacific), other than the upcoming draft, expect one or more of these guys to replace Miller by next year:

JR Giddens
Gabe Pruitt
Rajon Rondo
Devin Harris
Keyon Dooling
Chris Duhon
Nate Robinson
Anthony Roberson
Jose Calderon
Roko Ukic
Kirk Hinrich
Mo Williams
Daniel Gibson
Delonte West
Rodney Stuckey
Allen Iverson
Arron Affalo
Travis Diener
Jarrett Jack
TJ Ford
Jamal Tinsley
Stephen Graham
Luke Ridnour
Ramon Sessions
Mike Bibby
Acie Law
Raymond Felton
DJ Augustin
Shaun Livingston
Mario Chalmers
Marcus Banks
Chris Quinn
Jameer Nelson
Jason Kidd
Jasom Terry
Jose Juan Barrea
Rafer Alston
Aaron Brooks
Luther Head
Mike Conley
Javaris Crittenton
Kyle Lowry
Roger Mason
George Hill
Blake Ahearn
Randy Foye
Sebastian Telfair
Jerryd Bayless
Sergio Rodriguez
Steve Blake
Petteri Koponen
Russell Westbrook
Ronnie Price
Monta Ellis
Anthony Morrow
Demarcus Nelson
Marcus Williams
Baron Davis
Jordan Farmar
Sasha Vujacic
Steve Nash
Leandro Barbosa
Goran Dragic
Sean Singletary
Bobby Brown
Quincy Douby
Beno Udrih

Ridnour, Hill, Telfair and Terry jump out as guys that are probably attainable or at least cheap and might be a decent pairing with Brand.  Unfortunately, none of those four proabably could be a starter on a top team.

There sure are a lot of crap pg's in the NBA.

George Hill?  No way - the spurs like him too much and they are old and he played well - they need to keep him.

If Skils is so damn in love with Ridnour that he can't start the better point guard maybe the sixers could get sessions?  I'd like that

Tony parker is still young, and not going anywhere soon.  I'm sure they view Hill as a good 2nd team player, but if offered enough they would make him part of a deal.

I would say Sam would look great next to Duncan, but Pop is not stupid.

Hill is like Westbrook and probably Bayless, their teams love them, but I tried not to exclude anyone outside of the Chris Paul/Deron Williams/Derrick Rose class.  We definitely need a few strong PG draft classes to strengthen this position league wide.  This is not a thrilling list by any means.

The failure of the Bucks to make Sessions a starter is fairly confusing and mildly hopeful as well.  Plus their GM is somewhat erratic, although i have no idea if we matchup in any way with them.

Many of these guys are willing shooters, but not many are good ones.  Even with his recent hot streak playing with Augustin at times, Felton is still shooting 40%.  A trade of Sammy to Charlotte might include Felton coming back, but is that really a good thing?  Lots of instant offense, no-size guys like Aaron Brooks, Nate Robinson as well.

Its interesting how finally having a skilled PF puts limitations on what type of PG will fit.

Of course having a non "shooting" guard doesn't help things when trying to find the right PG.

more realistic options:

Delonte West
Jarrett Jack
Crittenton
Beno Udrih

More of a reach:

Sessions
Hinrich
Felton
Terry

Delonte West just signed a deal didn't he?  Where does the BYC nonsense work in plus he's part of the rotation of a championship caliber team that might not want to rock the boat...sessions gets yoyoed by his coach who is an idiot and whose gm is kind of a putz too - he might be easier to get

Felton - well larry brown changes how he feels about guys daily...

Not to sound like a broken record- but I wonder if Sessions is a good enough shooter.

We should just trade to get a pick high enough to draft Curry, and we'll be set.

Not to sound like a broken record but i don't give a frack...i care about point guards who shoot THIRD and pass first and second.

You should care.  I'm not saying being a good NBA PG requires you to be a great shooter- but shooting needs to be a prerequisite for any future Sixer PG.

Like I said elsewhere, the issue is when Brand sets a pick for the PG, will the defender have to fight over top of the screen to prevent a jumper? If not, it clogs the lane, preventing Brand and the PG from getting an easy look at the basket.  Brand worked best with Cassell, who you could not leave open by going under the pick.

We need a PG who's skill set would work next to Iguodala and Brand. After committing 160M over 5-6yrs getting pieces that complement them has to be the 1st priority. And in general, that means getting players who can shoot well enough to demand defensive attention.  Iguodala will never be a great shooter.  Young will be O.K., but you need a PG who can shoot to balance the team.

I agree with TK.  This team isn't short on talent, but is certainly in need of some kind of balance.  A pg who can shoot should be mandatory not only to compensate for Iguodala's poor shooting, but to keep the defense honest on the perimeter instead of having them collapse on Brand and force us to make deep shots.

Not trying to turn this into a trade thread at all, but does anyone think the Bulls would part ways with Hinrich for Dalembert?  Rose is obviously the pg in Chicago and Dalembert could actually round out there roster nicely.

Why not put Iguodala at point and  find a shooting guard who could shoot - he's got good court vision and is more likely to grow into the position than louis williams.

I woudl think shooting guards who could shoot would be easier to find"? and you don't so much have to worry about the height because you can swap Iguodala and this 2 guard on defense

I thought you guys wanted a point guard who could shoot at a good percentage - if you want crappy FG% keep miller
