Sixers at Toronto 11/12 - 7pm
« on: November 12, 2008, 06:49:09 PM »
2nd half of a back to back on the road against a good team.  Any win, let alone this one will be a confidence booster.... that being said, I don't see this game to be any different than our previous three.  Lou usually does well against Toronto... we'll see if Mo decides to give him some decent minutes for a change.

Eh, you get all these newbies or youngsters non-stop bitching and moaning about this poor start.... I'm as frustrated as the next guy, but I'd rather discuss here than sort through outrageous trade ideas, rediculous frustration driven point of views, and Toronto trolls (which always show up).

Good 1st quarter. Weak 2nd quarter.  Reggie Evans got owned by Bargnani off the bench.  Green is actually having a rare decent game, but I still don't like him getting the nod off the bench ahead of Lou.

Putting some distance in the early 4th - uptempo - running - no brand or iguodala on the floor

"Iggy Pop" isn't even worthy of a berman nickname

We needed Speights to show up and he did.  He also got screwed on some calls.... which I guess goes with being a rookie.

Anybody care to fill me in on the details of the game.  The one game I have missed this year has to be their best win.  I see WG had a fairly big game hitting threes and handing out assists, always nice, but something you can't count on consistently.  Looks like big numbers for Miller and Brand, decent for Iggy and stellar for Speights.  Speights played about equal time with foul prone Sam and was much more productive it would appear.  Reggie and Lou with very limited minutes I see.

Jose Calderon left early in the 3rd (or at least that's when I found out about it_) and didn't return :)

Brand and Miller were both on their games.  Brand's mid-range game was on.... it's definitely where he's comfortable.

Iguodala didn't shoot well,  but was definitely more aggressive and active than he's probably been all year.... he showed up tonight.

Dalembert was a black hole... almost looked disinterested.... Speights was the complete opposite.... and he spent a lot of time banging down low with Bosh and Jermaine.

Evans was his usual self.  Committing stupid fouls when we're in the penalty, getting abused on defense... The only reason Evans got off the bench was because Speights and Dalembert were both in foul trouble and we needed two bigs on the floor.  Speights is the superior player and its not even close.

Lou turned in a solid spurt in the 4th to extend the lead when Toronto was closing in.  Willie delivered tonight, but Lou needs to be ahead of him in the rotation.... that should be a given.  In the last 3 games, Lou has gotten 17, 13, and 11 minutes respectively.  He's the most talented player on the bench and we're simply not utilizing him.

All in all, it was a road win on the 2nd half of a back to back so we'll gladly take the confidence booster.  We've got a favorable stretch ahead of us with Indiana, Ok city, Minnesota, LAC, Golden State, and Charlotte.

There are other aspects to the game aside from the points - i wish people would try and remember that.

Looks like they made a concerted effort to get Brand out in the post and into pick and pop.  The majority of these situations involved Green, not Miller.  Green can get to the rim off the pick and roll well, and when he's hitting his jumpers like he was today can be a good option for the pick and roll.

It's interesting watching the difference between Brand and Speights.  Speights breed and butter offensively in college was the pick and roll, with a hard drive to the rim, whereas Brand prefers the pick and pop.  Both of them are going to need to be in those situations to be effective.

How much longer until Speights outplays Dalembert?  Has it happened yet?

I do have to give Cheeks credit (I know that's not really allowed sometimes).  He's pretty steady with Speights being in the regular rotation.  He's just about worked himself as the first big off the bench.  It would have been very easy for Cheeks to bury Speights on the bench, behind veterans such as Evans, Theo, and even Donyell who could man the position.  For Speights to be getting into the game before, and playing more minutes than, Evans is significant IMO.

Young's defense overall is pretty amazing.  He defends the pick and roll very well.  I'm so happy to have him on the team.  They didn't look for him too much in the half court after the second quarter, and he sat too much of the 3rd IMO (he left like 4 minutes into the quarter), and never got into a rhythm in the second half, but he still made an impact.

Nice, solid road win.  It's good if they've recognized Brand's comfort zone offensively and are working to get him in positions like that he can succeed.  It would be nice to have someone in the starting lineup that could run the pick and pop, but at least they're trying it with Green/Williams.

Yep.  He was working real hard on his turnovers the previous games as well.

I don't think it's a stretch to say he was horrible the first 5 or so games this year.  That's not just scoring.
