By the way, I'm in Anaheim for the rest of this week. Can anyone recommend a safe-haven dinner spot for a hate-filled bigot? Any of you want to see a real Jack-Mormon up close? (Is that the right term JoMal?)

Anaheim is not too far away, will you be there until Friday?  I have a regular poker game in the OC on Fridays, maybe we could get dinner or something.  Do you drink?

wk is out of town, how about Reality and LakerFan Dan?

There are a bunch of places on Beach blvd.  Can you give me a better idea of where in Anaheim you're at?  Just a major cross street.

Isn't it? It is what my friend Derek (who is a Mormon and should know) called those who had fallen out of the churches favor. Which happened to Derek when he went on a mission to England. You see, there was this married lady.......and for some reason Derek had a guilt trip, so he confesses......so he gets sent back home, where he has to stand up in front of his church and family and get vilified for it this transgression (he could invite a friend to support him, so I got a front row seat to his humiliation). So he gets excommunicated for a year.

During that time, Derek sends for a girl he met in England (not the married one, but she already has a kid without benefit of a marriage) and who he converted to LDS. Who he marries (I was his best man - Mormon weddings - a whole other story). Derek later goes into business with his dad and younger brother. Derek is a very hard worker and his idea, which I now forget, was a good one. But since his father helped finance the business, he decided his younger son needed a career more then Derek, so the two of them essentially bought Derek out without Derek really getting a say in the matter, leaving him jobless and giving the business to the younger son. Who had no clue as to what to do, so within a year bankrupts the business.

Then Derek's mother dies (he was close to her), and Derek's father remarries in like a month, with the support of Derek's older brother AND younger brother. Derek....not so much. Derek is NOT what you would call a Jack Mormon, but he certainly is not a church elder either. I go to the wedding of Derek's daughter he has with the English woman, who my wife and I actually like. At the wedding, I get to see Derek's family once again, and since I know them, I sit with them and get to hear how happy Derek's father is in his new marriage and how great things are, and why he thought remarrying was such a good (church hates a vacumm) idea.

Derek does not come over and talk to me at all while I sit with his family. Later I talk to him and I mention some of these things and Derek immediately shrugs, changes the subject and his wife gives me a <cut the topic off> motion. Derek only comment - "I don't care what they do", then a month after the wedding, Derek sells his carpet installation business he started up after the other one was taken away from him and moves to Montana or Idaho, or some place. I have lost touch.

Needless to say, my opinion of the Mormon church, based on Derek's treatment and his own family, is not very good.

It could be derek comes from a real crappy family?

My father died last week - i found out two days later - i haven't seen him since i was 7 - and he was a total prick and i was shocked at how little his death impacted me (at first when sister said 'our father' i thought she meant step father)...i don't judge the irish or the lutherans based on his piss poor behavior or that of his familiy (deadbeat owed my mom about 300K in support)

I don't have the intimate involvement you had with one mormon famil but i've known a variety of people from mormon families some who escaped and went the complete other direction some truly faithful and some in between...i wouldn't look down on the entire mormon church as much as i'd look down on dereks family for being truly awful (and trust me, i know truly awful)

What kind of places do you like to eat?  I can help you out if you give me an idea of what you want to eat and your price range.

Actually I don't, but much of how Derek was treated...both by his own family and the church itself....was sanctioned. Like it was ordained.

I think I should add that none of this has anything to do with Ted, of course, regardless of his depth into the LSD church. This was just my own experience with the local branch and how it treated a pretty decent guy, who was sewing some wild oats that had nothing to do with what kind of person he was.

JoMal, the public vilification you speak of sounds completely wrong and against what church guidelines (at least as they are today) prescribe. Disciplinary councils are supposed to be intensely private affairs between only the branch (or ward) leadership and the member (and the member's witness if he/she desires one). Public confession and humiliation (outside of this small council) is NEVER supposed to be part of the repentance process, which is supposed to be a spiritual, loving process.

My brother went through a similar experience during his mission to Portugal, and it was a very difficult time for him. Even my own family, who tries their best most of the time, mishandled the situation, and even though some of us tried what we thought was our best, my brother felt shunned and outcast--not only from his own church, but his family, too. He's still not over it, and I believe my family was wrong and will be held accountable, as will Derek's. Well, I'm getting quite personal here, but . . . for what it's worth, your friend Derek sounds like the kind of Mormon I'd like to know, an imperfect one. And trust me, I know a lot of "perfect" Mormons I'd rather not know.

I like just about anything. Do you know of any good Korean places in the area?

My Thurs Fri Sat are looking very crowded.  I used to like the Newport Beach Hooters.  For the wings of course.

It was not only the Mormon church campaign that successfully shot the fudgies down but also apparantly Blacks voted 70% to keep Godly marriage between man and woman.  Also contributing were the record number out to vote for Obama.
