The end is near and the Kings are dead.....
« on: April 11, 2008, 03:00:59 AM »
Long live the Kings. (what the hell does that mean anyway? The king is dead, long live the king. Bit late, if you ask me, if he just died. And if it is for the new king, can't it wait?)

My Kings are no longer doing a good job even being spoilers, as Theus and management have taken to the youth movement in full force and judging their young talent for next year. Will we keep Artest? Hard to say, though both sides seem happy with one another. Beno Udruh is another question mark. The Kings will need a point guard for sure for next year and drafting a point guard is fine, but starting him right out the gate? Not too many pass that test with flying colors. So Beno is essentially auditioning for the part. Him getting hurt (his back) has put considerable stress on him, as he just recently barked out at Thesus, when his coach said about his injury "I don't know what's going on with him". Beno took that as another criticism (alla Popovich) about him being soft and injury prone and went to the media with it. Theus apparently was talking about him (Theus) not being a doctor, so he did not know how serious Beno's back was to prevent him from playing. But poor Beno got upset...

Brad Miller has been shut down for the rest of the season. Stress fracture in his foot and a bone chip in his elbow. His conditioning this year has been the best of his career, so we will see him return. Spencer Hawes is getting the starts in his place. Mikki Moore is a strange case for a power forward. He does everything you might want out of the position, except score consistantly and rebound consistantly. He does those things, but then he doesn't. But he sets screens, yaps at people, keeps people in the game, but then.....

Francisco Garcia is one talented bugger, and he has leadership qualities, but he also has cement between his ears. How often does he have to leave his feet and THEN decide to pass the ball, before he figures out that the odds of a teammate being available to pass to while you are up in the air can be limited. But that never stops Cisco. No sir. Have to admit it is fun seeing his expression juuuuuust at that moment when it dawns on him he has a problem.

But enough about the Kings. They are done for the year and here I am without any reason to pay attention to what happens in the post season. But you guys can do something about that. Yes sir. I am now officially available to be added to your rooting section. Who will give Bandwagon JoMal the best deal to be their new booster?

Since we only have limited representation of teams on dabods' forum, I will limit my choices to only those teams currently represented and playoff bound:

the Lakers < Laker Fan, WayOutWest, Randy, westkoast, msc>
the Jazz < Ted, Joe Vancil, Skandery, Wolverine?>
the Spurs <SPURSX3, Lurker, Reality ??>
the Sixers <dabods, rickortreat>

(Sorry jn and ziggy, but the Blazers and Wolves are not in the running)

I will judge the best a**kissing post made to JoMal over the course of the next week and then decide who deserves the services of JoMal at his snidely, sarcastic best.

And have no fear, Laker people. JoMal will be a loyal and very biased Laker poster if you are judged the winners.

Oh, and it will have to be at least a week. JoMal and his lovely wife will be in New Orleans from Saturday until the following Sunday (business trip for me), so will not be able to respond until then. So think of me on YOUR side this post season and how much it will thrill you to see me dishing for your team.

My ass has been properly pampered and powdered and is ready for smootches.

Can't help but think about how wussy the NBA has got all around when I hear about guys like Beno crying to the media about comments from a coach.  All the older players and coaches have stories about how coaches would never compliment you.  They would never be "nice" to you.  That wasn't to hurt your feeling it was to motivate you to prove them wrong.  Now instead of trying to make your coach look foolish with hard work they run to the reporters.  Which in turn don't write quality articles but more like gossip columns these days.

But back to the Kings....

Is it safe to say that Petrie's "mad skills" as a GM have tapered off?  There is a lot of question marks for the squad.  Not just at point guard or in the post.  Who is going to be deemed the leader of the squad by Theus?  What are they going to do with Ron Ron? Or better yet will he stay?  Another question I have is does Theus have a true direction for the squad in general?  When Adleman was there it had direction and was a well oiled machine.  I know he just got there but what is this squad trying to do?  Are they going to become a more defesive minded team like the Van Gundy Rockets?   Do they want to try to cause problems on the offensive end like the Warriors?   Right now I see him trying to do both.  Really only the Pistons, Celtics, and Spurs currently can do that and that's because they have THREE guys who are top notch.  The club seems to be going in the direction of being solid but not strong enough on either side of the ball.  That just will not cut it in the West for the next 2-3 years.

I was trying to think of a half way decent compliment to woo you to the Laker Nation.  Along the lines of "you are the Sean Connery of Phillyarena because even though you are a grey, bitter old man you are just as cool as you were in your 30s when Goldfinger came out" but then I realize not only was that not very funny/good, no matter what is said you rather jump into a pit of butter knives then root for the Lakers.

May I suggest the Jazz?  They are a fun team to watch and not really talked about heading into the playoffs.  That I think might be dangerous.  The Spurs already are well repped and I think the bandwagon is actually a grey Vespa so you wouldn't fit anyways.

Actually, I was just going to reply to your other thread but I'll do it here.  I hope you and your wife have a great time in NO.  Listen to some great jazz and just enjoy the time together.  We take basketball pretty seriously around here -- I know I take it too seriously at times but life and family make basketball seem pretty insignificant.  Sorry to hear about your wife but I hope she whips this and you both get this behind you.

Have a great time together.

Sorry JoMal, but Philly fans don't roll out the carpet for anyone.  If you want to root for the Sixers there's room on the wagon, and plenty to drink, but don't hold your breath waiting for an invite.  Nobody gives away the good wine for free!

But since you're without a team for the moment and hurting emotionally, you shouldn't leave such a decision to whoever decides to kiss your ass best.  People who are good at ass-kissing are pretty worthless when it comes to anything else!

OF course there are a number of teams that are working hard and might be worthy of your support.  I believe my team stands out of course, and finally as the season has worn down, even the writers, yes the same geniuses who picked my Sixers to finish dead last in the Eastern Division, are now telling people to look out.

Since the all-star break the Sixers have played over .700 ball.  Only the Celitics and Rockets had a better record over the same period.  If that isn't enough to make you a fan, how about their athleticism?  They don't just win, they win with style, stealing the ball and running down the court for an emphatic slam. The Sixers are one of the top 3 teams in the league in the number of dunks they score.

So you have a young, exciting team that plays hard and is a dark-horse candidate.  Just think of the fun you will have baiting over confident Cavalier or Magic fans.  Bask in the joy of seeing Detroit fans sobbing as their dreams are destroyed.

There is a higher risk in choosing an upstart team like the Sixers than in some of the more favored teams, but then again there is a higher reward too!  Besides they are a good bunch of guys, no rapists on this squad!  But Jason Smith was seen making out with a porn star.

He HAS to root for the Spurs.  It is the only team that he can relate to since they are all old enough to be great grandfathers just like him.
It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave.  Keep on thinking free.

We ALL know that he can't root for the Lakers -- rooting for Kobe could send him into catatonic schizophrenia.  The next thing we know, he will be chanting "Kobe for MVP."

Lurker the Spurs are too well represented around here.  Same with the Lakers.  While you bring up an excellent point I think we need to push him towards another team.  That way we get his usual top notch analysis but about a team that no one talks about.  Like his favorite channel, I think we need to keep this Fair and Balanced.

JoMal has the deep disgust for the Lakers that only a true Celtics fan could have.  Maybe it's time to get him a KG jersey?  Or maybe a Lebron Jersey?  Lebron does like the old folks...

May I suggest the Jazz?  They are a fun team to watch and not really talked about heading into the playoffs.  That I think might be dangerous.  The Spurs already are well repped and I think the bandwagon is actually a grey Vespa so you wouldn't fit anyways.

First off, westkoast, if the a**kissing is deemed worthy, I would certainly jump onto the Laker bandwagon and be a true warrior and wield my butter knife with pride over my purple Kobe jersey. Speaking of whom, have you seen his latest commercial? Not even sure if he is advertising the car or the sneakers, (a 'silent' video of the shoot was shown on Sportscenter last night) but in it, he is with his teammate, I think it is Turief (sp), and he jumps OVER the moving car as it speeds towards him. He does it twice, then does a very phony looking belly bump with his supposedly 'loyal' friend Turief, as they laugh about what Kobe had just done.

As for the Kings, I would not yet count Petrie out. You have to remember he has a few more limitations to work with then teams located in New York or Los Angeles. To the Lakers credit, they take full advantage of the cards dealt them in building competitive teams over time, while the New York teams look like idiots overpaying mediocre talent over and over again. the Seltics are also good at keeping up with the League eventually.

Back to Petrie. When he had to get rid of Webber, things went south for the Kings. He had to bring in overpriced pieces that have lingered like bad fish and he can't get rid of the smell until their contracts expire, because trading them away would just bring back more bad contracts, most likely. So for at least one more season, the team will have limited options to be free agent activists, or even make a decent trade. Brad Miller, Kenny Thomas, and Sharif Abdur-Rahim all will be off the books after next season, and things should open up for the team then.

Theus is getting his plan together, but he has some personnel issues that he probably could have handled better. The Udruh thing, for one, and how he was using Mikki Moore at the beginning of the season, compared to now. What to do with Quincy Douby, who needs more playing time, but at what position? Spencer Hawes should develop into a fine post player eventually. He is only 19, and has lots of potential and room to grow yet. Kevin Martin is a given, and still can be more affective defensively and as a distributor. Miller is still good for another year, then will be free to sign elsewhere if he wants. He did say no to using Kenny Thomas for anything, which was brilliant, in my mind.

Spencer Williams is another story. Picked #5 in the draft two years ago by Atlanta, he is considered a bust, and lost his starting PF job to Al Horford in training camp. But Petrie decided to make him the main focus of the Bibby trade. His playing time has not come yet, but he is an interesting piece. The Kings need a quality PF, who can rebound. Williams is big, but does he have the mental toughness? Can he learn to use his body to block out more? Can he become the beast the team needs, or will they lack that player and have to look elsewhere. Williams' future is going to be decided this off-season on how hard he works on his game.

The short term focus will be for Theus to get the young players on the court more and see what he has for next year - and work on the defense, which he continually tells his players will garnish more playing time if they play better D. In particular - Hawes, Douby, Williams and Udruh. Garcia is looking solid enough to give more minutes to right now. Martin is getting even better - he could become the focus of the team. Artest and Miller should still be on the court, and Moore is filling the PF job for now, but can't be the longterm answer by any means. Either a starting point guard (if Udruh is not resigned) or a solid backup is a priority for Petrie to get this off-season. A top power forward has to eventually get picked up either in this draft or next, if Williams can't do it.

But the Kings have at least one more season of growth to go yet, then not only will the books be cleared of expiring contracts, the youth movement will be over and these guys will either pull it off or Petrie will know it is time to jettison some of them for good.

Thanks, Randy.

Unfortunately, she had a very rough night and finally got the notorious nausea that usually accompanies chemo treatment. Is usually lasts a few days. But she is game and if she can get to New Orleans, should recover enough to enjoy the time there. I hear you about enjoying the time together, and we plan to.

Rick -

Lest you forget, I am from Hazelton, so Philadelphia is my original sports town, and of course as a result, very familiar with insincere a**kissing and know how worthless a good a**kisser can be in the long run.

Now, the Sixers are a very intriguing team. You get rid of Iverson and suddenly team play comes to the top. Your "hidden" players can now play their own game instead of Iversons's. The players finally realyze they are good enought to compete with the top teams in the East. I also hate the Seltics, and the Pistons mean nothing to me. I could be a Cavelier fan because of LeBron, and even Orlando could get my support. But as stated, I am FROM the Philly area.

Could a good buttlicking on your part persuade my suave, debonair JoMal ways to become a Sixer poster and rain havoc upon all your foes, both teamwise as well as poster pests? Think of the possibilites of JoMal defending the PA pride on your side.

As a supporter of a team that has been the recipient of the Jazz "thuggery", I have a strong dislike for the team - from THAT side of things.

But as a bandwagon defector, waiting for that perfect a**kissing springboard to jump on the UJ steamroller wagon, I promise to be a pit bull Jazz supporter that even Jerry Sloan would want to reign in.

BTW, how DO those old Spursies get through a long NBA game without......ah...that explains the extra mop up guys San Antonio employs.
