"World According to Garp" is excellent as a book also.  In fact John Irving is just generally a good writer.  "A Prayer for Owen Meany" (done in movie form as Simon Birch) is also excellent.

That movie is a rollercoast ride. Tragic comedy at it's best, and that scene you refer to is soo messed up.

Horse Whisperer
