Lets hear it for JImmy Rollins and Curtis Granderson

Curtis Granderson of the Detroit Tigers has set a major league first this season.
He has hit 36 Doubles, 22 Triples, 22 Home Runs, and stole 23 bases, while hitting .301.
He is the first player ever to have 35 doubles, 20 triples, 20 home runs, and stole 20 bases in the same season.  That is a pretty amazing accomplishment.  GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!

Jimmy rollins is two triples from accomplishing the same feat (currently has 36 doubles, 18 triples, 28 HR's, 36 SB's)

He just got robbed of a triple last week by a bad call too (they called it a catch when it clearly hit the ground)

Go Jimmy!!!!!!  That would be very cool if he did it in the same year as Granderson.

If Rollins would get the 2 triples, the number or people in the 4x20 (HR's, doubles, triples, steals) club would double.  There were only two who ever did it before this year.

Rollins just got a triple today.  That's 19 on the year.  30 HR, 37 SB, 38 2B, 19 triples.

Last day of the season with a playoff berth on the line Jimmy Rollins got his 20th triple, plus stole 2 bases.  How is this for a season ending stat line

30 HR
20 Triples
38 doubles
41 steals
94 RBI
139 runs scored
212 hits

MVP comes down to him and Matt Holliday.  My vote goes to Rollins.

Matt Holliday probably had a better pure statistical season.  .340 average trumps. .296.  135 RBI trumps 94.  36 HR trumps 30.  Runs go in Jimmy's favor (137 to 118), as do SB's (11 to 41).  Matt has the higher OPS by over 100 points.

But Matt's season has been done before.  It's a great season, but it's not a statistical anomaly.  Outfielders have hit 36 HR's before.  Outfielders have knocked in 135 RBI, which isn't unprecedented for a middle of the lineup hitter.  People have hit .340 before.  Pretty much every year.

But what Rollins has done has literally never been done before.  20x20x20x20 has been done 4 times in the history of the league.  30/30 has NEVER been done by a shortstop, except for ARod.  Doing so from the leadoff spot just makes it doubly rare.  He played in 162 games, and game to play every day.  What's plagued Jimmy in the past was a slow start, but this year he was consistent the ENTIRE year.  Holliday has better voting stats, but Jimmy's season is more of a statistical feat.

I expect that how far each of their teams advance in the playoffs will determine who gets the MVP.  Both players have had excellent seasons and been integral to their teams success thus far.  It's so close that they will see which team wins out to determine who gets it.  If Ryan Howard bangs a lot of homers in the playoffs, he might get a shot at it, even with his record for strikeouts.

I'm not enough of a fan to know anything about Granderson or Holliday, but I have seen Rollins play and he always seems to be in the middle of anything the Phillies do well.

The Phillies had a pretty good run to catch the Mets, but really the Mets lost it as much as the Phils won it. It took them to the very last game of the season to win, even though they had gone ahead with 2 games left.

Now the Phils get a little rest and figure out who they get to play on Wednesday at home, either San Diego or Colorado.

One interesting bit of irony.  In the year that the Phillies became the first MLB team to accumulate 10,000 losses, they made up 7 games with 17 to go.  That now means the greatest collapse in MLB history is no longer owned by the 1964 Phil's, but by the team the 2007 Phils passed the 2007 New York Mets.

As a former Phillies fan/resident, that the team came back to win a playoff berth after being seven games down earlier in September is a great accomplishment. And since I can recall the exact opposite happening to Philadelphia, turn about is fair play. And that the team they caught was the Mets....... :)

Between the end of RS, and the first day of the playoffs.  Last nights game can be considered in the voting, because it is not a playoff game, but a regular season game.
