PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Greg Oden, the top pick in this year's NBA draft, likely will miss his first season with the Portland Trail Blazers after surgery on his right knee Thursday.

Doctors found cartilage damage during an exploratory procedure, and team physician Dr. Don Roberts performed microfracture surgery to repair the damage.

"There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all, he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal," Roberts said in a statement. "All those are good signs for a complete recovery from microfracture surgery."

The 7-foot center is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. Full recovery likely will take six to 12 months, the team said.

Oden was the top pick in the June draft out of Ohio State, where he averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds.

The Blazers have scheduled a news conference for Thursday afternoon to discuss Oden's situation.

This is unfortunately. Sorry, ziggy. It's bad enough when a veteran player you rely on gets hurt and lost for the season, but the top rookie? Just hope he can recover and be a force in the NBA. Stoudemire did it.

Tough break for Ziggy and the TrailBlazers.  Tough tough break.  I am a bit disappointed myself because I wanted to see a really interesting ROY race between Oden and Durant.

Sometimes the best trades are the ones not made?

I remember the talk elsewhere of
Tim Duncan for Oden, Brandon Roy, Przybilla and others.
Kobester, Bynum, Lamar Odom for Oden.
Lebron for Oden.

I heard it was Tim Duncan for Przybilla strait up.

Thankfully he is is still young.  It seems like guys with some miles on them are never the same after this type of injury.  It still takes a while for younger guys to come back but they manage.

Still, what a bummer for you zig.  Walton's feet, Mychal Thomspons leg, Bowie's feet and now Oden's knee.  The Portland area has not been kind to high draft pick big men.

Well Sh!t.  I have been in Germany and Holland all week.  My brother sent me a text while I was there and told me the bad news, and at first I thought he was jerking my chain.  Looks like another season with a high draft pick.  It looks like those who have the micro fracture need a full 12 months of rehad to get back, but those who have had 12 months seem to be OK.  Zach came back after about 7 months and couldn't dunk even though he was 6-9.  Amare tried to come back after 6 months, and shut it down.  Both guys though seemed to be better 12 months removed, so I guess there is hope.
Hopefully this isn't a Sam Bowie version 2.
