The Orlando Magic are at it again...
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:04:55 AM »
118 MILLION DOLLARS !!!!!  Man alive, the Magic are throwing gobs and gobs of money at a lanky SF with questionable foot issues in a sign-n-trade of all things.  Haven't we seen this before -- its eerily similar isn't it.  Aaaand a Sign-n-Trade of all things, have the Magic learned ANY of their lessons.  I'm thinking the Magic spent too much money this summer on Grant Hi.....urr..I mean Rashard Lewis.

I guess having a big man in Dwight Howard instead of another lanky SF (Tracy McGrady) is going to work out better, but we're just going to have to see.  Lock up the franchise big man before the Lakers snag him, I guess they did learn one lesson.

Report: Magic to sign F-C Howard to contract extension

July 12, 2007

ORLANDO, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- Now that Rashard Lewis is on board, the Orlando Magic apparently are on the verge of locking up Dwight Howard as well.

The Magic likely will announce Thursday that they have signed Howard to a five-year contract extension worth $85 million, according to a report on the Orlando Sentinel's web site.

The team could not confirm the report, but the Magic have a news conference scheduled for Noon EDT.

The announcement would come a day after the Magic introduced Lewis, who was acquired in a sign-and trade deal with the Seattle SuperSonics.

The Sentinel reported that Lewis agreed to a six-year deal worth an estimated $118 million. It would be the largest contract in franchise history and the fourth-biggest current contract in the NBA.

The Magic then immediately turned their attention to Howard, the top overall draft selection in 2004. Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy told the newspaper that he is looking forward to guiding a team built around the 21-year-old Howard and the 27-year-old Lewis.

"We have our two cornerstones now," Van Gundy said. "Now you build a team around them."

Despite averaging 17.6 points per game last season and grabbing more rebounds than any player in the NBA over the last two campaigns, Howard still is only scratching the surface of his limitless potential.

The 265-pound Howard is a fascinating blend of power and agility, as was evidenced by his 29-point, 17-rebound performance against the Detroit Pistons in Game Four of the first round of the playoffs.

Howard, who doesn't turn 22 until next December, also has shown flashes of immaturity and must continue to improve his offensive repertoire in the post.

The 6-10 Lewis averaged a career-high 22.4 points and 6.6 rebounds in 60 games last season, his ninth in the NBA. The 2005 All-Star was drafted by the Sonics out of high school in 1998 and has increased his scoring average in all but one season.

The Magic went 40-42 last season and earned the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. They were swept in four games by the top-seeded Pistons in the first round of the conference playoffs.

Plus they hired Patrick Ewing to work with Josh Howard.
Ewings coaching has done so much for other bigs. ::)

Boy is it early this morning I read this post and was like 'Why would Patrick know how to play Josh Howard's position' but realized you mixed up the 'Howards'.

Am I missing something?  Or have I been asleep for the past 2 years?  I didn't think Rashard Lewis was all that.  Solid player but when did he become a super star?  I understand his contract is inflated compared to when Shaq and T-Mac where there but damn.  Way way too much.  Shouldn't Dwight get the 118 million and Lewis the 85? lol

Sometimes you have to dumb down the game for some young players to get it, but hiring Patrick Ewing to 'coach' someone, like he is, you know, smart enough to not tie his shoes together each morning, now that certainly is a stretch.

As for the Lewis signing, thank God for Charlotte, otherwise this kid would possibly be the highlight of this summer's free agent bidding war and who knows where that would lead. Now that he is off the books, the rest of us can give a sigh of relief that our teams did not throw that much money at him.

At least Laker fans can continue that discussion, except we substitute Lewis with "RadMan".

Why is it that we normal folks can see these guys are not worth superstar paychecks, but the guys who have money to burn literally are oh so anxious to light up their victory stogies with multi-million dollar contracts?

Who knows how RadMan will work out after his hand surgery, he came into the season with a problem in his shooting hand that would require season ending surgery, he elected to play through it and have the surgery in the off season.  Still, I agree in that role players are getting franchise player paychecks.  Maybe Buss should ease up on the high stakes poker and escorts and focus a more of his time and resources on his franchise.

I'm still blown away they kept he and his 5 year contract after his snowboarding shenannigans.  msc thinks the Lakers would have taken too big of a PR hit in that other pampered NBA players would have then boycotted the Lakers.  I say it was a great opportunity to cut him and had they done so the Lakers should have beared no guilt, zero, none.

10 million or so tied up in Radman and DFisher.  Go title pursuit go! ::)

My thoughts exactly lol...kind of makes you think Kobe isn't all that insane, just a spoiled brat.

JoMaL..sometimes I wonder that same thing.  Why are the guys who are paying the large sums of money unable to see players for what they are worth.  This is never an issue with all-star or top notch talent, it's almost a no brainer.  It is these role players that seem to be over valued each time contract time comes up.  Now I know they have people who scout across the league and they seriously think out decisions before they spend a few hundred million.....right?  One would think.

wk, it is the nature of the game - a self-feeding animal that can never be satisfied.

The owners have that salary cap and by God they are going to use ever penny of it, regardless of the very obvious fact that 80% of the players in the League have no business earning the money they do, but teams seem hellbent on giving out every penny of it as a show of power.

How often do we constantly hear of a player getting the maximum contract available to him and we fans are left scratching our heads over the logic of it?

The money also gets thrown around unfairly. When Bonzi Wells was being shopped around, his agent turned down what I thought at the time was a fair offer for his talents given by the Kings - not a max contract, not for a bundle of years, but something he could have been satisfied with. But no, with a blind eye to the the demands of the market, the agent held out for the max, and a decent player like Bonzi got virtually shafted for the balance of his career. He is clearly a better low post 6'5" guard then tons of overpaid others dragging down the salary caps of countless teams, but his worth is never going to be a factor from here on out while other <younger> players get overpaid for doing less.

Terrible signing by Orlando.  The only excuse I can think of is that they needed to do SOMETHING to make Dwight Howard believe they were going to try and get help for him.

That is exactly why they did it.  He was VERY heated after getting swept in the first round by Detroit.  With him able to be a free agent in a few years I think they had to bring another player in to even get him to sign an extension.

Why they had to overpay by 5-6 million a year for another player to keep Howard happy...I dunno.
