Reports say Yao Ming signed extension
« on: August 31, 2005, 02:48:20 PM »
Word is it's a 5 year deal worth 45% of the Rockets salary cap.

So much for the Lakers rebuilding plans!  We're forked!

Okay, I can't TELL you how happy I am to return from a trip and hear great news like this!!!  I am DEFINATELY sending the Rockets a Christmas card for this signing -- I did NOT want to see that overrated overhyped beanstalk become a Laker -- the guy HAS incredible potential but it's pretty obvious, at this point, that he is never going to be conditioned enough or aggressive enough to live up to all the hype.  I can't tell you how glad I am to hear that the Lakers won't get the opportunity to screw up and sign Yao!

Houston, thank you!  :hail:  :hail:  :hail:  :hail:  :hail:

Just got more info in print.

It's 25% not 45% of their cap, roughly 12 million per year.

Laker exec. Jim Buss, son if Jerry Buss and heir to the Laker franchise, stated publically that Yao was his main target for 2007, second on his list was LeBron.

No way in hell, or even L.A., LeBron and Kobe co-exist on the same team.

The Rockets would be insane not to re-sign Yao and because hes a big asian man...the endorsments will still be comming to him.  I think that would be the only reason he'd leave that market to goto say an LA or NY.

Anyone know how long T-Mac is signed for?

Yeah, and what did he do in the playoffs?  He looked pathetic and couldn't keep up!  Houston just looked bad and it certainly wasn't because of TMac -- it was because Yao was passive, slow and got out-played on both ends of the court.  He certainly didn't get that contract based on the playoffs.  You DON'T make that kind of money unless you can strap a team on your shoulders and BALL -- Yao hasn't proven he deserves that kind of money -- they are simply hoping that the center position continues to deteriorate further in the NBA so that Yao can take advantage with his heigth.

I think Yao has tremendous skills but does he have the determination and aggressiveness to be "the man" in the NBA?  Nope -- it was TMac who was "the man" in the playoffs not Yao.  And who is making more money?

As Randy indicated, where does he rank in heart?

Yeah, and what did he do in the playoffs?
He increased his scoring from 18.3 to 21.4
He increased his FG% from 55.2% to 65.5%
He increased his blocks from 2.0 to 2.7

But I have to be honest and give you one point......
He decreased his rebounding from 8.2 to 7.7

And his minutes were consistent with the rest of the season.

TMacs numbers went up but so did the number of minutes on the floor....so how much of his "increase" in production was due to a increase in minutes????

T-Mac has two more fully guaranteed years on his current contract.

For 2005/06, he will be getting $15,694,250.
For 2006/07, he will be getting $16,901,500.

Damn it is a shame that Webber is no longer a King.....the responses that first came to mind were endless.

I have to doubt Lebron was ever seriously ever going to go to the Lakers, and essentially that is because Kobe is already there.

But can you imagine the reaction in Cleveland if they fail to pay him a ton to resign?

That certainly should not stop you.

Besides, don't you think I have a good feel for those players who play the game with the killer attitude as opposed to those who don't?

And remember, Peja is still a King. Lack of heart is by far his biggest liability.

Thats great hes been injury free for 3 years but that still doesnt equal out his lack of heart.  That or him being the least aggressive big man since Shawn Bradley.

You know, if Yao could play a slowed down game and get regular breaks to the bench, he is a pretty decent player.  And it's pretty easy to score more points when you are 9 inches taller than most of your opponents (and your wing span makes you even longer than that) but watch the guy play -- he simply doesn't impose his will against anyone.  He SHOULD be able to garner more rebounds than that simply by reaching over their heads and since he never leaves the floor he certainly isn't exerting himself more than most of the other big men in the league.  But the drive simply isn't there -- and you can have all the talent in the world and if the drive isn't there, it simply isn't going to happen.

PS - How many years do we have to hear excuses for the guy?  First, it was lack of conditioning since he wasn't use to the up and down pace of the NBA -- now it's playing non-stop for 3 years (most of us could play non-stop for 3 years at the speed Yao moves -- even Shaq beats this guy down the court!!!) -- so what's the next excuse?
