Cruise, Lauer argue on 'Today'
'Worlds' star: 'You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do'

Friday, June 24, 2005; Posted: 3:34 p.m. EDT (19:34 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Let the cynics talk. Tom Cruise is in love -- and he just can't restrain himself.

"You know what? There's always cynics. There always has been. There always will be," said Cruise, who hasn't been shy about displaying his affection for "Batman Begins" actress Katie Holmes. "I have never worried ... about what other people think and what other people say."

Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, went public with their romance in April, smooching and posing for photographers in Rome. They recently became engaged.

Many have doubted the romance -- the words "publicity stunt" have rained down on the couple as Cruise has promoted his new film, "War of the Worlds," directed by Steven Spielberg, which opens on June 29.

"I have to tell you. It's just a great time in my life," Cruise said in an interview that aired Friday on NBC's "Today" show. "I'm really happy. And, you know, I'm engaged. I'm going to be married. I can't restrain myself."

The actor, whose marriages to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman ended in divorce, declined to say what Holmes has brought to his life that wasn't there in the past.

"I don't want to compare things," Cruise said. "It's that thing where you just -- in life when it just happens. ... You meet someone. And it's -- I can't even describe it."

When asked if he could be with someone at this stage in his life who doesn't have an interest in the Church of Scientology -- Holmes has said she's embracing the religion -- Cruise told interviewer Matt Lauer: "Scientology is something that you don't understand. It's like you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist.

"It is a religion. Because it's dealing with the spirit. You as a spiritual being." When Lauer mentioned Cruise's earlier criticism of Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants, Cruise told the "Today" show co-host he didn't know what he was talking about.

"You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do," Cruise said.

The interview became more heated when Lauer, who said he knew people who had been helped by the attention-deficit disorder drug Ritalin, asked Cruise about the effects of the drug.

"Matt, Matt, you don't even -- you're glib," Cruise responded. "You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That's what I've done."

Scientology:  :nonono:  :nonono:

I popped by a Jazz festival in downtown Mpls this weekend.  Unfortunately one of the stages was right by the Scientology center so I was asked several times if I want to take a free personality test.   My thought was, "So, you believe unhappiness is caused by left over memories of a time when an alien race invaded and YOU want to sit in judgment of my flaws?"  :moon:

I am there with you on that JN.

As far as anti-depressents etc., I believe we are an over medicated society, and using less and not more would be a great thing.  That of course doesn't mean that they don't have some value.  On the one hand I like the fact that he is taking a strong stand, but at the same time he is a real piece of work.  He acted like he is an expert in this because he read some papers, I mean get real.  It was really bizarre.

A quotation is a handy thing to have about, saving one the trouble of thinking for oneself.

Cruise is a real big dummy.  You can tell he's been "prepped" for his discussion, no way he's reading up on the subject.  He's gone on record as saying he can basically cure some of these people becuase of his vast scientology training.

Scientology IMO is no different than any other religion like Christianity, Judism, Hinduism ect...so I can't dog them for being any extra "nutty".  I think when some people bone up on their history they'll realize what a scam religion has been.
"History shouldn't be a mystery"
"Our story is real history"
"Not his story"

"My people's culture was strong, it was pure"
"And if not for that white greed"
"It would've endured"

I'm with you on that.  Religion is a scam, but then again so is Psychiatry!

Treating people with drugs due to mental problems is scary.  Chemical Imbalance!?  What caused the chemical imbalance?  Maybe their mental problems are self-induced and the chemical imbalance occurred as a result and was not the root cause of the illness!

Yes, "Mr. Kennedy your daughter is suffering from a mental imbalance which is why she acts out all of the time, we recommend a lobotomy..."  Can you imagine a father doing that to his daughter!?

Actually Rick you should have said

Yes, "Mr. Wells, Bonzi is suffering from a mental imbalance which is why he acts out all of the time, we recommend a lobotomy..."  or perhaps

Yes, "Mrs. Rider, JR is suffering from a mental imbalance which is why he acts out all of the time, we recommend a lobotomy..."  or perhaps

Yes, "Mr. Patterson, Ruben is suffering from a mental imbalance which is why he acts out all of the time, we recommend a lobotomy..."  or perhaps

Read up on the subject? Did I not read somewhere that Mr. Cruise is dyslexic? You KNOW someone is reading his material to him.

Latest on Cruise/Holmes. He and his "people" won't let little Katie out of their sight. He even took her into the mens room at some appearance they were making together. When she had to go herself, three of her guardian scientologists tagged along, in case she needed......I don't know....a realignment or something. She was reported to be looking extremely haggard, like she had not been getting any sleep.

Time for Mr. Cruise to disappear from the public conscience.
"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty.....We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason.....We are not descended from fearful men, not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes that were for the moment unpopular....We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home."

Her career is soaring now, she's now considered an A lister where as before, Hollywood never took her seriously. She's going to ride it out, hopefully, write a book when she's all done.
