MLB baseball Hall of Fame Voting
« on: January 05, 2005, 01:11:37 PM »
Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg were worthy selections, and I had no problems there.  There were a couple of others though that I felt got screwed.

Jack Morris  -  From Jayson Stark of ESPN
Suppose we told you there was a pitcher on this ballot who won 36 more games than anyone else in the sport while he was in it? And suppose we told you this pitcher started three All-Star Games -- a feat surpassed, since the 1970s, by only Randy Johnson?
Then suppose we told you this guy pitched a no-hitter, was an Opening Day starter 14 times (more than any American Leaguer since Walter Johnson), averaged 14 complete games a season for eight years and made 515 consecutive starts without missing a turn (a record at the time)?

Finally, suppose we told you he was one of the most fabled postseason pitchers of his day, that he started Game 1 of the World Series for three different Series champs and that he pitched all 10 innings of possibly the greatest Game 7 shutout ever?
Consider these stats
254 lifetime wins (39th alltime) and 6-1 in the post season
5 time all star
7 times in the top 10 in Cy Young Voting
3 20 win seasons
47th all time in innings pitched
28th all time in K's
33rd all time in games started
His Gray Ink score which measures Top 10 finishes in major stat categories is 190, and likely hall of famers score 185.  He is #48 all time for pitchers
His Hall of Fame Monitor score which is a statistical measurement of lifetime stats is 122.5, and likely hall of famer is 100.  Overall his Hall of Fame Monitor score is #63 all time for pitchers

Of the 10 pitchers most similar to him 6 are in the hall, and 1 Tom Glavine will be after he retires.

Goose Gossage  -  From Jason Stark
Let's run through his glittering credentials again: Nine All-Star teams in 11 years. A 10-year blitz of microscopic ERAs and terrifying strikeout totals. More than 130 innings in relief three times. A span of nearly 20 years in which the average of right-handed hitters against him never cracked the Mendoza Line. And, like Sutter, an aura that came wafting out of his fu manchu every time he grabbed the ball -- an aura that announced: "Game over."

9 Time all star
Twice in top 10 in MVP voting
5 times in the top 6 in CY young voting
29th all time in hits per 9 innings
37th all time in K's per 9 innings
9th all time in games pitched
15th all time in career saves (#2 all time when he retired)
5th all time in games finished

Hall of fame monitor score is 126, 100 is likely hall of famer, #60 all time

Bert Blyleven

4 times in top 7 in Cy Young Voting
10 times top 10 in ERA
287 career wins #25 all time
11 times top 10 in WHIP
7 times top 10 in hits allowed
13th all time in innings pitched
5th all time in K's
9th all time in games started
242 complete games
60 shutouts which is #9 all time

Gray Ink score  -  239, likely hall of famer is 185, he is #23 all time for pitchers
HOF Standards  -  50, likely hall of famer is 50, he is #36 for pitchers
HOF Monitor  -  120.5, likely hall of famer is 100, he #67 all time for pitchers

Of the 10 pitchers who are most similar to him in stats, 8 are in the hall.

Now I have a bone to pick with the Hall of Fame Voters that I will never let go.  Joe Morgan was a first ballot hall of famer, and rightfully so.  Ryne Sandberg was a 3rd ballot HOF inductee, and rightfully so.  Lou Whitaker received less than 5% on his first year on the ballot, and as a result can never be put into the hall, NEVER EVER.

Compare the lifetime numbers of the 3

Offensive Stats
         Morgan   Sandberg   Whitaker
Runs  1650  1318  1386
Hits    2517  2386  2369
2b      449   403  420
3b      96   76   75
Hr      268  282  244
RBI    1133  1061  1099
SB      689  344  143
BB      1865   769   1099
BA      .271   .285   .276
OBP     .392  .344  .363
Slug % .427  .421  .426

Defensive Stats
              Morgan   Sandberg   Whitaker
Putouts      5758   3892   4771
Assists       6969   6648   6653
Errors          245    120    189
Double Plays  1505  1177  1527
Field %         .981   .989  .984
Range Factor   5.00  4.94  4.95

Very little difference between the 3.  Morgan is clearly the best, but the difference between Whitaker and Sandberg is very small, yet Sandberg is a hall of famer, and Sweet Lou will never have a chance to be elected.  What a joke!!!

Ziggy not everyone sees the HOF like you and I do.  Based on what the guy did ont he field he should be in.....but since Ryne Sandberg, at one time, was one of the most popular baseball players he gets in.

Why popularity helps determine if you get into the HOF in any sport blows my mind.
