Bring on the Skunkie-Lakers
« on: October 12, 2004, 10:15:11 AM »
While other teams miss half their FTs and walk batters while having a comfortable lead vs the New York Skankies, the Boston Red Sox Curt Shilling is primed to go Skunk hunting for the second time this decade.  "I'm not sure I can think of any scenario more enjoyable than making 55,000 people from New York shut up," he said Monday.

Johan Santana has got to be saying "what if" after a fabulous year was culminated by defeating the Skunks twice in the playoffs, only to have the second victory be "Gradyfied" by MN manager Ron Gardenhire.

The Skunks Tom Gordon, his left eye still a little blurry after it was hit by a champagne cork in Saturday's clubhouse celebration at Minnesota, would take over as the closer if Rivera is absent. Tanyon Sturtze and Paul Quantrill would replace Gordon as the setup man.

No, the Lakers only wish to be as successful as the Yankees.   :D
It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave.  Keep on thinking free.

Yes and No.  The Lakers have not even surpassed the Celtics in NBA titles.  NYY own the MLB record by far.  What it does mean is that  Yankee opponent often behaves like Laker opponent.  Specifically coaches.
See zig threads of last week re MN.

Shooting under 50% on FTs = baseball version of walking batters, the likes of which end up scoring runs in a game the Yank opponent otherwise had in the bag.*   Yankee adherents, like Laker adherents, would point to rrrrrrraaaaaaagghgggh tough Laker D causing the opponents to miss FTs.  We know that isn't so.   Likewise in baseball, a walk is usually entirely up to the pitcher.  Exceptions are bogus umpiring or batter doing good job of fouling off pitches and tiring pitcher out, thus he finally does throw balls.  This did not happen AT ALL vs Skankiees and MN.

*In baseball its also wise to at times purposely walk a batter.  Ie Braves vs Houston Astros, man on second and 1st base open.  Phil "Gardy" then elected to pitch to JD Drew instead of walking with 1st base open.  Dumb dumb strategy.

Curt Shill is a pitcher who has none of this mental meltdown nonsense that Yankee and Laker opponents both have.  Only time Shill has faced Skunkies in World Series was with Arizona Diamondbacks.  Shill was superb along with Randy Johnson but oh how so very hard did Arizona manager try to hand the series to NY.
Ala Rick Adleman, etc.

Both are the most successful sports teams in their sport over a long period of time (Celtics dominated a small league for a while, but have not been a top team for 3 decades).   Both from big markets.  Both had some of the top players the spot has ever seen.

Without a doubt there are similarities between Yankee MLB and Laker NBA, such as you mentioned longevity.  Marketing power, global appeal, etc.

ouch.
Curt Shill is hurt but Francona waits till its 6-0 to pull him.  Okay.
Actually the game turned on Man Rams stellar left field play.  Who is faster he or Bartolo Colon?  Most importantly he didnt get his uniform dirty.

Superb comeback.   If only Ortiz blast could have been two feet higher.

I hope this is a crazy series and more of the unexpected happens.

ouch2.

Last night Godzilla does a superb job of putting the bat on the ball.

Tonight its defense as the Skunks get another great pitching performance from Lieberman.

Still they had a shot.  8th 2 on none out.  Only scored one run.
9th 1 runner on but David Ortiz fans against Rivera.  Ballgame.

Curt Shill out with a torn ankle.
It looks like it will take Derrek Swisher to join the team and come in and hit a .4 for the Bosox to pull this one out.
