 State GOP says Michael Moore illegally offered underwear in exchange for voting
October 5, 2004, 6:19 PM

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- The Michigan Republican Party is asking four county prosecutors to file charges against filmmaker Michael Moore, charging that he illegally offered underwear, noodles and snacks to college students in exchange for their promise to vote.

"We want everyone to participate in this year's election, but not because they were bribed or coerced by the likes of Michael Moore," said Greg McNeilly, executive director of the state Republican Party.

The GOP said it asked prosecutors in Wayne, Ingham, Antrim and Isabella counties to charge Moore with violating Michigan's election law. The law prohibits a person from contracting with another for something of value in exchange for agreeing to vote.

Moore, a native of Flint, is touring the country and imploring "slackers" who usually don't vote to head to the polls this year, saying they could make the difference in the presidential race.

He made stops at Michigan State University, the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Central Michigan University and Elk Rapids High School on the first leg of a 60-city pre-election tour.

During each program, habitual nonvoters are invited on stage to pledge to vote for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. First-time student voters are offered gag prizes such as clean underwear.

The GOP said Moore also offered students a clean dorm room, a year's supply of Tostitos and a package of Ramen noodles.

Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for the Wayne County prosecutor's office, refused to comment on the matter. Calls to Moore and the other county prosecutors weren't immediately returned Tuesday.

Hi im part of the republican party and instead of using my time and effort to get voters to the polls for my canidate I spend time worrying about Michael Moore.

Whats wrong with giving college students, typical college student stuff, to get out and vote.  He didn't say they had to vote for Kerry.  He's not going to put a gun to their head in the booth.

buying a vote is buying a vote, it shouldnt be done.....unless of course the Kerry's want to gimme a few million to get my vote for JFK....they can afford it...

He's not buying a vote.  He is offering them things they could use to get TO THE POLLS.  Buying a vote would be a Bush staffer comming up to me at the voting booth and handing me 300 bucks to give George another vote.  He's not saying 'If you take this pair of underwear you are bound by law to vote for John Kerry'.  If he gives them something and they say they will vote then more likely than not they are going to hit the Internet, grab a paper, or speak to their parents about the canidates.  To me, thats exactly what needs to happen to get younger, less intrested people to vote.  The younger generation is what is going to be in control in 10 years so the younger generation needs to get out and voice their opinion.  Myself included.

but west, IF they ARE being asked to vote for the Democratic ticket - that IS buying a vote.  Bribery with govt officials for example doesnt have to be done with money, "gifts" are as bad as cash when it comes top bribes, i know this was probably done tongue in cheek - moore wouldnt be stupid enough to go past the point of doing something illegal but he WOULD get as close to it as possible - in any case the reps have a point if moore gave these gifts for the pledge to vote for kerry.

What about those people who give rides to polling places to potential voters?  Are they not offering something of value in exchange for voting?

And would the Republicans been up in arms over this if they gave soiled underwear?

Pssst here's a pair of <enter porn starlet name> soiled undies if you vote.  I know when I was college age that would have been more incentive than clean underwear.

Technicallity IMO.  We all know how Ramen noodles influence college students to not think for themselves.  He is trying to get them to the polls and is saying 'vote for kerry' but he is not giving them underwear and ramen after he sees them punch Kerry in.  The staffers all do the same thing.  They try to rally people to the polls first....and then say Hay vote for so and so.

Didn't Republicans in Arizona have voters sign a pledge to gain access to rallies?  Sounds like the same type of inducement....insignificant monetary inducement to say you will vote one way or the other.  Michigan Republicans are just mad because they didn't think of it first.

if there is a "gift " of any kind in exchange for a promise or intent to vote for any such party or candidate - that would be buying a vote, whether it be ramen or not.  as for the reps doing that, i cant say i even heard about what bbf just said but if it was true, yes - that would be buying a vote- it still would not be right to do, nor would i justify it as being "fair" because the other side did it.  it's wrong because it is wrong.

now if moore just pledged them to VOTE  only, without trygin to sway thier opinion of WHO to vote for, than that owuld be ok.  just getting our young people to take part in the election is pretty noble and necessary in our country.

Can't believe your counting free Ramen (.20 cents) and clean UNDERWEAR to go to the polls as briberies!  Cmon.

so you define a bribe by the VALUE, rather than the act....great thinking.

Yes. Tom Delay bribing people ON THE FLOOR OF CONGRESS worries me a lot more than Moore's.

I look at the bigger picture. Motivating young people for the first time in their lives to get out and vote. Republican or Democrat, I couldn't care either way how they voted, just as long as they go and do it.  I also like the idea that he's reaching a demographic (SLACKERS) who have never been targeted before.

I've seen the demo's work hard this year to go after UNLIKELY voters,( minorities, young people and corpses) and its going to make all the difference this election.

and i said as much too, as long as it is not trygint to get a promise to vote for a particular party  that is fine, when they start oidng something or giving something in exchange for the vote to someone, then thats wrong...
