 ESPN.com news services
The Lakers, in need of a big man since trading Shaquille O'Neal to Miami, had to give up Gary Payton to get one.

An NBA source told ESPN.com's Bill Simmons that the Celtics have dealt Chris Mihm (in a sign-and-trade), guards Marcus Banks and Chucky Atkins and a future second-round pick to Los Angeles for Payton, Rick Fox and a lottery-protected first-round draft pick.

Boston also receives cash in the deal, ESPN.com has confirmed through a high-ranking Celtics source.

The Celtics have scheduled a 4 p.m. ET news conference to announce the trade.

Payton, who in June exercised his $5.4 million option to return to the Lakers, struggled in his only season with the Lakers' triangle offense. He started all 104 games the team played -- 82 in the regular season and 22 in the playoffs -- but averaged 14.6 points, his lowest output since the 1992-93 season, and a career-low 4.2 assists in the regular season.

The 36-year-old point guard's departure is just the latest in a series of radical offseason changes in L.A. In the weeks following the Lakers' loss in the NBA Finals to the Detroit Pistons in five games:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Im going to kill Mitch Kupchek.  Seriously.  They wanted to have a more fast break minded offense...so they deal the guy who was running the fast break last year to a T?  I was pissed about his play in the playoffs but dealing him and Foxy for Mihm and Atkins?

Why in the WORLD would you do a sign-and-trade for Chris Mihm?  I could understand it if you are getting an expiring contract but you AREN'T -- they just resigned him for the deal!  Kupchak -- you are an IDIOT!  This guy couldn't find a way to play quality minutes for Boston!!!  You also managed to trade GP -- umm, notice we don't have a quality PG now?  Atkins can't stay healthy and I don't know anything about the other guy.

That "other guy" you got is the only one with any kind of potential.

On the set of Walker Texas Ranger Chuck Norris brought a dying lamb back to life by nuzzling it with his beard. As the onlookers gathered, the lamb sprang to life. Chuck Norris then roundhouse kicked it, killing it instantly. The lesson? The good Chuck giveth, and the good Chuck, he taketh away.

Well Shaq has to be laughing.  He knew the team was going in the wrong direction because the GM is a moron.....and it came true like hes Miss Cleo.  Id be laughing too.  Except for the fact that I am still loyal to the purple and gold.  If you see a headline about Mitch K. getting beat up in LA by a LA fan..........look no further

Anyone else see a connection here? The King's Peja Stojakovich starts demanding to be traded and gets the Kings some press time, and suddenly the Lakers pull off a quickie trade to put them back on the front page.

But as for this trade.........YECH!!!!

And with Mihm, where does that put Vlade??? One of the reasons he opted not to resign with Sacramento was that he was projected to be getting fewer starting minutes. Vlade is one of those guys who needs to play to stay in shape, since he doesn't work out otherwise, according to Holy Chrisnyah.

They need to remind people there still is a Laker team after they lost Shaq, Fish, Fox, Payton, and Malone.  Cut em some slack.

Call me crazy but I like this trade from a talent stand point.

You basically traded Payton for Mihm and Banks.

I had Banks on my FL team and he put up some really good numbers early on.  Mihm is a solid player, I've seen him play numerous times, he reminds me of Mark Madsen with coridination and size.

Payton was becomming a cancer with the departure of Shaq.

Bitch Kupcake is an idiot but he was dealing with a bigger idiot in Ainge and got the better end of the deal.  The Lakers will be much quicker and can apply much more defensive pressure now and Atkins is a solid back up PG.

Either that or it's the hang over talking.

Oh I like this trade too.  A Lakers starting lineup of:

Atkins....so good he keeps being traded
Kobe....I'm the man now
George....can I remeber the plays for a whole game (especially in a new system)
Grant....too bad I'm not Horace
Vlade...I only have to flop against Shaq twice a year now

Backups:

Rush....probably 2nd best player on the team
Mihm....can't outplay LaFrentz (03/04) or Diop (02/03) for minutes
Banks, Walton, Cook.....potential but to succeed or to bust

Too bad Los Angeles can't take the GM of the Clippers and match him with the owner of the Lakers.  Then they would have a complete front office.

You forgot Lamar "H.R. Puffenstuff" Odom.  That's a big upgrade over George in terms of skills, if not brains.

Your right....Odom is a big upgrade over George.   I had a feeling I was leaving someone out.  But after playing in the Olympics this summer I would bet that Lamar will play only about 60 games in the NBA.

Mihm....can't outplay LaFrentz (03/04) or Diop (02/03) for minutes

LaFrentz was actually pretty much already done for the year by the time Mihm came over.  and mihm got more minutes than diop when he was there.

Really, it's more like:
Mihm...can't outplay Mark Blount or   Big Z for minutes.

But yeah, he's horrible.

Having watched him play college ball at Texas....yeah he is horrible.

Counting on him for 20 minutes a game to back up Vlade is not a good bet.

Sometimes I wonder if Mitch just prints out the list of players from NBA.com then throws a dart at the list and decides what top Laker players he wants to trade for em.
