Who should your team protect in the expansion . .
« Reply #15 on: April 27, 2004, 12:31:45 PM »
Here is the current status of the Spurs.  Bowen has a player option but is unlikely to exercise it.  Hedo is on the final year of his rookie contract and is a restricted free agent.  I expect the Spurs to exercise the team options on Brown & Horry so they won't be free agents this summer.

Bruce Bowen ...........   p-opt   '04
Matt Carroll ..........      '04
Alex Garcia ...........      '04
Emanuel Ginobili ......      '04
Jason Hart ............      '04
Sean Marks ............      '04
Hidayet Turkoglu ......      '04
Kevin Willis ..........      '04
Devin Brown ...........   t-opt   '05
Robert Horry ..........   t-opt   '05
Tony Parker ...........      '05
Charlie Ward ..........      '05
Malik Rose ............   p-opt   '07
Tim Duncan ............   p-opt   '08
Radoslav Nesterovic    p-opt   '08

So the players available to protect are:
Bowen
Turkoglu
Brown
Horry
Parker
Ward
Rose
Duncan
Nesterovic

Of these 9 players Ward is the odd man out.

Look if you want to go around in leather chaps inflicting pain on the guys you ride around that's fine but I don't swing that way.  ;)

On the set of Walker Texas Ranger Chuck Norris brought a dying lamb back to life by nuzzling it with his beard. As the onlookers gathered, the lamb sprang to life. Chuck Norris then roundhouse kicked it, killing it instantly. The lesson? The good Chuck giveth, and the good Chuck, he taketh away.

Please, Lurker, I thought you would have known by now that the Lakers are exempt from all league rules, revisions and statutes.

Talk about a couple of "reality" based answers.  I have seen that much sidestepping since Bush was asked about his military service.

oops...

The rest of the teams can eat cake!

Muhamid Ali couldn't touch the side stepping Bush did when asked if he had made any mistakes.  It's good to know we have a PERFECT president in the white house.  Either that or he's in denial...hmmm...wonder which one is OBVIOUSLY the correct assumption?

Disregarding FA status:

Kobe
Shaq
Malone
GP
Walton
Cook
Slava
Rush

I think Kobe, Malone and GP are FA's next year so I'd replace them with:

Fisher
Fox
George (I'd prefer for him to be gone already!)

Sorry, I had to make time to look up info on the Lakers roster and FA status for this next coming year.

Kobe Bryant       p-opt '04
Derek Fisher       p-opt '04
Horace Grant       '04
Karl Malone       p-opt '04
Stanislav Medvedenko    '04
Gary Payton       p-opt '04
Bryon Russell       '04
Rick Fox          '05
Devean George       p-opt '05
Shaquille O'Neal       p-opt '05
Jamal Sampson       t-opt '05
Luke Walton       t-opt '05
Kareem Rush       t-opt '06
Brian Cook       t-opt '07

Based on this, I see us keeping the following players:
     Fisher
Malone (if he doesn't opt out)
GP (if he doesn't opt out)
     Fox
     George
     O'Neal
     Walton
     Rush
     Cook

Which leaves Sampson as the odd man out (probably the reason why he was signed to more than a one-year contract).

Looking at that list, do the Lakers really need to protect 8 players?

Couldn't they make 5 or 6?

All right....Kobe will be available for Charlotte.  Besides the fact that you protected 9 and only 8 can be protected.

Nevermind....I forgot about the special rules for the Lakers.

Since Kobe has a player option, which he has made clear that he is going to take, he is a free agent -- he does not need to be protected -- thanks for trying though!

Only if he exercises prior to the draft.  Too bad the Lakers have to play by the rules same as every one else....no refs to give bogus calls on this issue.

Try again.
