Poll: What style offense is best suited for now and future?
« on: December 11, 2008, 12:33:37 PM »
I'm asking this across a few boards.  Assume we get a new coach.

Aside from trying to get easy fast break chances, what should this team try to be in the half court?

Look at the current roster.  Limit future roster changes to moving Miller and/or Sam and having the MLE this summer.

Here are some options:

1.  Early offense/Dantoni
-prob need more shooters, and likely go small with Thad at PF for long stretches.  Need a good driving, decent shooting PG (drive and kick.)

2.  Motion/Priceton:
-takes advantage of this teams good cutters.  rob try to mve Sam for a better passer/shooter like Brad Miller.

3.  Pick and Roll/Pop.... Sloan offense:
-Maximize Brand.  Need a PG who has a respectable shot and good quickness.  Likely need better perimeter shooters using trades/MLE (but not necessarily great players on the perimeter)

4.  Isolation:
-Focus on the best match-up and go to the well until it is dry.  Either post up one of the guards/forwards or have a G/F break down their man (Lou/Miller/Iguodala/Thad) .  Leaves some players underutilized, but great for masking weak offensive players like Sam and Evans.

5.Triangle:
-Use Brand at the high post.  Add shooters.  probably a reach for the talent on this team unless Thad becomes unstopable ;)

5. Other:  Is there a scheme that fits the current or future core that I'm missing?

Speights?

My knowledge of basketball styles like this is more limited than most folks here but i think from these descriptions i think the motion princeton makes great use of Iguodala Young Brand and Speights - but not sure if miller is the guy to run one of these things?

The Motion offense would fit most of our current personnel quite well except for, you guessed it, Andre Miller (no set plays, not quick enough) and Sam Dalembert (way too dumb).  The Princeton offense, which is a version of the motion offense, relies much more on having competent 3 point shooters, so I think just a straight motion offense would work much better.  This kind of offense always has people moving off the ball with a lot of picks in all different directions leading to backdoor cuts and open jumpers.  It actually relies on a lot of pick and pop, but with the pick being set near the hoop and then rolling out to mid-range, which would work really well with Brand and Speights.  There happens to be a VERY high profile coach known for running the motion offense who is currently a coaching FA: Bob Knight.  Just saying.

Honestly, watching the Sixers offense this year has been so brutal I can't even remember what good offensive systems look like.  Sam would obviously not fit in anything that required independent thought.  They would also still need more shooters in any offense they tried.  I really don't care what they do at this point, no matter what system you use the coach must be able to get his players to execute it.  That ain't happening on this team.  An iso offense would fit this team poorly and they would have to build for the triangle which takes a while to learn anyway.  Brand and Speights would both be good in a pick and pop/roll offense, but we need guards better suited to it.  The Princeton offense would be worth a go, although Thad and Brand are not great passers, Iggy and Speights both appear to have the necessary passing skills.

Really any offense where the players with the ball don't over handle and where proper spacing on the floor and use of screens is done effectively would be a big improvement.  The entire Utah offense might not be a bad one to try at this team's stage of development.

I think the motion offense is exactly what they should use in half-court situations.  Pick and pop, give and go, back-door cuts. They seem to be good enough passers on the break, and their superior athleticism should get them more easy baskets.

I'm not sure where anyone got the idea that this team can't shoot.  Iguodala took a while but has finally started to play like the player who got a fat contract this summer. Williams is starting to come around as well. Cheeks messing with the rotation hurts Thad more than anyone, he was playing better than anyone at the beginning and runs the floor better than anyone. He needs to develop a little bit more touch around the basket, learn how to beat players without outquicking them. Thad has also had some games where his outside stroke looked sweet.

Brand has a midrange game, which the Sixers have yet to really utilze, much to my puzzlement, and Speights has an outside shot as well. I think the Sixers should use Brand and Speights like Jerry Sloan used Karl Malone. I can't understand why Lou Williams can't run the pick and roll with them, or even Andre Iguodala or Willie Green.  They can get rid of Kareem Rush and Royal Ivey to get a replacement guard that can run the pick and roll.

I don't think the Phila. media or public would accept Bobby Knight as a head coach or anything else here.  But someone who coaches that offense would be.

Hmmm - i don't know - i think it has something to do with being one of the worst 3 point shooting teams in the league - and that was before they traded korver

How many head coaching jobs in the NBA has Bobby Knight turned down?
