So much for FA Ray Allen....

The Sonics just resigned him for 5 years at 85 million.

No he isn't, but in the NBA, with the CBA set up the way it is, you are often backed into a corner in situations like this.
There are few players that are available that compare to Allen.
If you let him go, you will have less money to spend on an alternative player, making it hard to replace a player like Allen.  So you overpay for him, or take a big step back in talent.
A third-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the majority. A second-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the minority. A first-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking.

A quotation is a handy thing to have about, saving one the trouble of thinking for oneself.

Other factors are:  Nate Mc makes Seattle and Allen better.  No Nate, we'll see what the future holds.

5 yrs.  It's one thing to have to overpay (see zigs post above) for a year or two, but to me the real test of this will be the 5 years.  If Allen is still cranking out the true all star years in the 3rd 4th and 5th years with or without McMillian, then the signing is good and well.

I do think its yet another case of NBA players saying "it's all about the title" being pure  :bs:

Allen could manage to feed his family and get by on only 50 million over 5 years and thus give the Sonics more cap space.

Since Shag did not lead the Heat to the championship, his 30 million a year is totally bogus. If a team is going to pay that much money, and the Sonics/Allen deal certainly qualifies, just making the playoffs year after year is not good enough compensation. Just ask me what I think about paying Webber 120 million over 7 years.

And yeah, he may have been worth it the first three years, but HEY Philly fans, is he worth it now?
