Would the Kings be better off moving Chris Webber?
« on: February 25, 2004, 07:16:22 PM »
One thing that has happened with the Kings over the last few years has been their willingness to move established players to get better younger players, with better salaries into the mix.  The Corliss Williamson deal was the most obvious, but so was moving Tony Delk, Jon Barry, Jason Williams. The reason they are such a good team is they have made a series of very timely and intelligent moves.  Petrie has managed the cap to perfection, and he has done a masterful job of building a tremendous franchise.

It seems that one of the smartest things the Kings could do is move Webber now (obviously after the season).  They have found their long term replacement for Vlade in Brad Miller, and it looks like Songaila is a keeper.  Perhaps it is time to move Webber and Christie for that star SG, and some front court depth.  The names Bryant, McGrady, Pierce, Allen come to mind.

The reality is the Kings are doing just fine without Webber, maybe it is time to move on.  They can get a younger player, a better player, and one that won't hide in crunch time.

A quotation is a handy thing to have about, saving one the trouble of thinking for oneself.

The addition of Webber in time for the playoffs can't be overlooked. Only a few players can really replace what Chris does within the framework of the King's offense and Darius Songaila is not one of them. This kid is good, no question, but he has a ways to go to contribute top PW numbers, and with the arrangement in the Western Conference, a top PW is a must.

But if the right deal came through, Petrie certainly would entertain it. A top flight shooting guard might be the answer, but it also strikes me as the adage we heard back when Webber was first traded to the Kings, which was directed toward the Wizards - do not trade large for small. They got a Mitch Richmond on the downward slide of his career. The Kings got a young power forward on the verge of coming into his own.

It is always easier to fine a perimeter guard out there then a top three power forward.

Seems to me that Webber's contract puts him out of reach for most teams, not to mention his susceptibility to injury. He's lucky to be on a team that can manage without him for during his frequent absences without seriously jeopardizing their playoff hopes.
