Kenny Rogers cheating in the World Series?
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:29:42 AM »
What do you think about the pictures on SI.com of some "funny stuff" on Kenny Roger's palm and thumb durring the game?  There is clearly something that looks like dirt or mud that could be used to scuff the ball.  They also showed pictures from the ACLS playoffs and a regular season game with the same thing.

Is he cheating or just incidental dirt/mud in his hand?

I don't think there's any way that it's "incidental."

That said, if a manager thinks there's something going on, then send the umps out there, get to the bottom of it, and cut the whining.  The time they spend whining would be better served by using it to help cork bats, doctor steroid tests, etc.

Baseball okayed the idea of cheating a long time ago - even if you *DO* get caught, as the George Brett pine-tar incident proved.  If you think a pitcher/batter is cheating, say something about it BEFORE they do it.

Please note, Cardinal pitching coach Dave Duncan did not join in the fracus over Rogers' "scumball". This was possibly due to the fact that Carpenter's curveball also has a nice "break" to it.

^^Nor did many (any?) of the players, in fact some Cardinals defending him.

Most definitely reaches in the back of his head with left pointy finger.
Even if you do not think he got stuff from the back of his head (and he did), he def procedes to play with the ball.
Rolling it in and out (ha applying the stuff) 3Xs.

No doubt he had something probably pine tar on his hand.  It helped him get a better grip, which helped him be more effective.  Probably not the same effect as a spit ball, but it did help him.  I think it is the same as grabbing the rosen bag, which is confusing as to why that is allowed, but Pine tar isn't.  Same thing, just a different substance.

At the same time, and I think the reason LaRussa didn't make an issue is it opens the door in National league parks to the same thing to his pitchers.  Pitchers hit in St. Louis, and they will use pine tar on the bat, which will transfer to their hands.  Happens every day in the NL, and no one says anything.
