Lakers coach Phil Jackson had said before the game: "For their team, it's just a dance, these 82 games before the playoffs. For us, it's the Bataan (Death) March."

Just soooo classy.

Quote
Tim Duncan had 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds when he left with 5:45 remaining after the Lakers' Smush Parker poked him in the right eye reaching for the ball.

Funny how these "accidental eye pokes" don't happen to Oberto,
Some more class...

"I was very disappointed in the Lakers fans at Staples Center tonight. Duncan was poked in the eye about halfway through the fourth quarter and went down, he rolled around on the ground so long that they called a timeout. Some brilliant fans started a “Duncan sucks” chant while he was still laying on the ground. When he finally stood up and was escorted to the locker room, half the crowd cheered for him and half boo’d him. Truly pathetic."

Dan -

Using "mundane" to decribe the reference to the Bataan Death March did have me wondering a bit. "Unexciting" and 'humdrum" are also interchangeable synonyms for mundane, and I would hope that any references to that historical event never crosses into those types of adjectives.

As for Jackson using the term, no, I can't say that I have often heard the reference to the Death March in quite the same way that he thought it appropriate, or even mundane, to use it as the appropriate metaphor there. It sounded a bit pedantic on his part to use the reference anyway, and what reaction was he hoping the printing of the phrase by the media would accomplish is anyone's guess, but you have mine.

Thanks for the apology, though there was really no need, as I find your dialogue on the whole to be very worthy and sincere, and you certainly can be allowed some slack by now.

But those Hollywood Oscar losers stuffing the crowd at Staples, booing Duncan as he was helped to the locker room......we may need to come up with another insulting metaphor before long to compensate.
"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty.....We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason.....We are not descended from fearful men, not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes that were for the moment unpopular....We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home."

Is JoMaL defending the Lakers against their big bad coach Phil Jackson?!  That quote was an obvious shot at his own team and you dont seem to like it.  Who stole your password today?

I would imagine Phil making such an analogy might have had the intention of telling people he thinks the Lakers hopelessly inconsistant play reminds him of a torturous march to an uncertain, but almost certainly tragic, destination, that being the early demise of the Lakers in the playoffs should they even make it to that goal, and yes, I realize that is a rather deeply clinical analysis of his intention but this is the so-called "ZEN master" we are talking about, his circular logic may very well fit that bill.

At least Duncan can be grateful they weren't Detroit or Philly fans, they might have been throwing beers instead of jeers.

And yes, cheering over any players injury is just flat low class, but who said Hollywood types EVER had any class? Those days went away with Bogey and Gable.

......eh.......

If Phil was dissing his own team, perhaps he might try dissing whomever was responsible for handing him the talent he has instead. To quote the metaphor Gods, you can't always just make lemonade out of lemons.

While I agree they do not have a stacked team...more talent wouldn't fix this team considering they can't play consistant defense night in and night out.

Oh ya you guys forgot to mention the boo'd Eva when they showed her on the big screen too     Does anyone else find it a little funny that once TP got together with Eva that his game has improved?  Its amazing what a beautiful woman can do for a man.
