War is never pretty. It always produces disgusting images of human suffering and collateral damage.
The US learned from Vietnam to control what the media shows. Our sensbilities are such that we wouldn't want to fight any wars if we saw what it did to people.
I want you all to understand that this is not just a cultural conflict, but an economic one. The US wants to bring that region under US domination, so we can exploit their natural resources. We've been involved in that area for years -(Iraq and Iran) The Shah was installed as the leader of Iran in a coup engineered by the CIA. Saddam Hussein was our CIA supported boy in Iraq.

http://tinyurl.com/59tuh Why do you think Iraq attacked Iran after Iran went Islamic fundamentalist on us?
They have reason to hate us, because we back whoever will allow us to exploit the resources. When the bankers fail, and the CIA fails, we send in the military. So our young men and women go off to die so you can get cheap oil to put in your car and heat your home and the oil companies can get stinking rich off the process.
This is not to justify the muslim fundamentalists, who seem to think we're still fighting the crusades. Many of these people are ignorant of history or of the world, but they are sincerly religeous. All that means is that they will follow someone they percieve as a spiritual leader well versed in the Koran. AL Sadr is one of these, but he led many of his followers to slaughter. He never kept his word when he made an agreement. He may know the Koran well, but he is not an honest man or a wise leader.
Afghanistan is really a tragic story. The Soviets invaded the country and broke its back (Not that it was a stable place to begin with!) The US oppossed them and financed fighters like Bin Laden who was also backed by the US!!!! Bin Laden learned a lot fighting the Russians, and got a swelled head. Afgahnistan was a good place for him, as he made contact with lots of other radical muslims and formed AL Quaida. The Afghanis that supported him became the Taliban. After the Russians left, the Taliban terrorised the country and kept Bin Laden safe.
The US didn't care about all the suffering the Taliban were doing to their own people., But when Bin Laden got those planes to fly into some buildings, we invaded the country. You know the rest.
