A team in the West is stockpiling.....
« on: August 09, 2004, 04:25:02 PM »
As I am sure was probably no surprise to any of you, the Rockets (more specifically Jeff Van Gundy) signed "Cholie Wahd."

The Rockets also signed Bob Sura.

story link.........

Now I like these moves because they sign two decent PG's to fill the obvious hole in the offense, and add a little depth, all at the same time.

But here is where it gets a little more interesting......

Radio reports in Chicago insist that Dikembe Mutombo will be traded to the Rockets for swingman Eric Piatkowski. According to them, the deal will be finalized in the coming days, after what was then the correctly predicted signings of Ward and Sura.

Mutombo would presumably fill the role of Yao's backup temporarily. This was from the Chicago Tribune a few days ago.

No word from the Houston side of things yet.....

Quote
Crawford and Jerome Williams go to the Knicks for Dikembe Mutombo, Othella Harrington, former University of Illinois standout Frank Williams and Cezary Trybanski. Mutombo and Trybanski won't be around long.

The Bulls already have talked to Houston about a deal involving Eric Piatkowski, league sources said.

Tribune story link......

So the question begs........if the H-Town lands Mutombo to backup Yao, coupled with today's signings, where does this put them in the wild, wild, west.

Honestly, if they land Mutombo, I think they can challenge SA and Minny for the top spot in the West.

Your thoughts please........

They still need a point guard.

Ward couldn't earn floor time in SA last year when they were DESPARATE for a backup pg.  His legs are too old to play strong defense and his shooting has always been streaky at best.

Sura is not an NBA caliber starting pg.  At best he is a good bench player to back up both guard positions.

I would say that Lue is still the best point guard on the roster....which isn't saying a lot.

The Mutombo deal is an impossibility for at least 60 days.  Since he was acquired by trade he can't be traded again before then.  Besides the simple fact that the trade doesn't make sense for the Bulls.  Trading Deke for a sg really thins out the Bulls front line.
It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave.  Keep on thinking free.

With the Lakers taking a dive and the Kings going haywire ATM Id have to say that the Rockets look like they could possibly be the 3rd best team out west.  The Spurs and the Wolves will be too much for them this season but things could even out if T-Mac and Yao learn to play well together.  It could possibly be the next best duo.  Both T-Mac and Yao have come into their own and are pretty tough to guard at their spots.  However, the Spurs have the talent from top to bottom, they have the better defense and the expierence from top to bottom.  Not to mention the best all around post player in the game.

Lurker,

Tell that to Chicago........more news from them.

Bulls, Rockets still talking: The Bulls' efforts to trade newly acquired center Dikembe Mutombo are focused almost entirely on Houston. The Rockets have no backup center and used their midlevel exception to sign two free-agent guards Monday - Bob Sura and Charlie Ward.

The Bulls would like to acquire veteran shooting guard Eric Piatkowski (two years, $5.75 million) for Mutombo (one year, $4.5 million).

The Rockets have a trade exception from the Tracy McGrady deal that can cover the difference between the two salaries. The teams also have discussed adding players, such as Adrian Griffin or free agent Scott Padgett.

Oh and BTW........I think Ward best fits this team.

Why?

Its not because of his shooting or slashing ability. They have T-Mac to cover those areas. Its becuse of his knowledge of the so-called "Van Gundy System." He knows how to run the offense the way JVG wants it to be run. And he knows how to funnel to ball down low to Yao. He's had many years of experience doing that with Patrick Ewing in NY.

This was the reason why I believe they signed him......to "quarterback" the team, nothing more.

Not exactly true.  Mutombo can be traded immediately....if he's the ONLY player Chicago is sending out.

Thus, mutombo straight up for Piatkowski can work.

That's way Atlanta was allowed to acquire Sheed at the trade deadline last year, then immediately ship him out after only 1 game.

And of course daily newspapers are well regarded for their accuracy in such matters.
