Philadelphia 76ers / Jason Smith Injures Knee
« on: August 07, 2008, 08:39:26 PM »

hate to turn the mood to negative..but we may be down a man. Jason Smith sustained knee damage today in a pickup game. He may be down a substantial amount of time....

SF76 then went on to say that the team does NOT believe that it is a minor injury. Suddenly, that backup big man needs to be someone who can actually play. I like Speights a lot but asking him to be our only backup center might be a bit much right off of the bat.

I say Ratliff should be our first target.

Philadelphia 76ers / Thoughts on Mike Bibby
« on: August 02, 2008, 06:03:26 PM »
We exhausted all of the talk about Iguodala and so I'm starting to think of some new plans for this team. I'm content with going through the entire upcoming season with the roster as is. If and when Andre Miller leaves us next summer for another franchise in a different time zone, who should we go after to replace him?

I thought of a lot of the younger PGs that we would have to acquire via trade (Crittenton, Conley, etc) but there will be a fair number of veteran PGs available as UFAs. One of them is Mike Bibby in Atlanta. Based on the way Atlanta is handling their negotiations with their restricted free agents, I don't think it'll be much of a stretch to see an unrestricted free agent walk away from them without a bidding war even happening.

I haven't been a Mike Bibby fan over the years but I do respect that the guy has lead the Kings and Hawks to the playoffs and performed well in them. With Brand turning 31 in the following season, I don't think we can screw around too much with younger PGs who need to learn the position when we will still have a number of young guys surrounding him. The Celtics were able to get away with Rondo at point because he had some veteran guys like Garnett, Pierce, and Allen to help him out. Anyway, the 31 year old Bibby would bring the outside shooting touch this team may need along with the veteran PG skills needed to carry us through the playoffs. Thoughts?

Bibby
Iguodala
Young
Brand
Dalembert

That seems like an extremely balanced starting 5 that could do a lot of damage.

Philadelphia 76ers / How Long Is Too Long?
« on: July 30, 2008, 01:06:49 PM »
Now that Ellis, Biedrins, Okafor, and Deng have all re-signed to massive contracts, how much longer do you believe it will be before we hear something about Iguodala? If this goes past this weekend, do you think we should be fairly concerned about Iguodala's contract demands? Surely Stefanski knows he's going to have to at least match the Deng contract for Iguodala so I'm fairly confident the 6 years/$70MIL has been offered.

When do you think we should start to worry? Has there been any reports from SF76 about this??

Philadelphia 76ers / Deng On Verge of Signing: 6 years/$70MIL
« on: July 29, 2008, 08:00:33 PM »
According to Marc Stein, Luol Deng is about to sign a 6 year deal for $70MIL with the Bulls. This could be the final straw that ends the Iguodala negotiations. Maybe Iggy gets a little more ($72MIL??) but it shouldn't be much more.

Philadelphia 76ers / Minimum Salary Questions
« on: July 25, 2008, 04:14:38 PM »
If/when the Sixers re-sign Iguodala and Williams, I count only 11 players that will be on the Sixers roster....

Miller, Iguodala, Young, Brand, Dalembert, Williams, Speights, Evans, Smith, Green, and Ivey....

so I imagine the team will fill it's roster out with players signed to minimum contracts. Am I wrong to assume that the Sixers are not restricted and can sign 4 players to minimum contracts? I mean, this isn't like an exception of sorts and since the team is in need of players they should be able to do this, right? I imagine at least 1 of those 4 open roster spots will come from the Summer League team. That would leave 3 open roster spots and I doubt the team fills all 3 but possibly 1 or 2 of them.

In looking at free agency, here are a handful of players that are UFAs that I think would be worth signing to a 2 year/minimum salary deal.

1. Kareem Rush: a shooter that can instantly become a fixture in an 8 man rotation.

2. Bonzi Wells: like Rush he would add some depth to SF position which looks pretty bare right now

3. Michael Finley: Veteran swingman that brings some more leadership to the team and a lot of depth. I doubt he leaves SAS for here but it's worth a shot.

4. Sean Livingston: Has connections to Brand and might not be a bad player to have in case he does return. He wouldn't be counted on anything this year but could slowly work himself back while learning from Miller in practice and so forth. Low risk/High reward.

Other notables: Robery Horry, Flip Murray, Lindsey Hunter, Derek Anderson (would he take the minimum??), Kwame Brown, Darius Miles (extremely unlikely given health and run-in with Cheeks), Kirk Snyder, and Fred Jones.

Philadelphia 76ers / Iguodala/Williams or Gordon/Deng
« on: July 25, 2008, 12:47:05 PM »
Real Quick: Which pair of RFAs would you rather have??

For me, it's Iguodala and Williams by a slight margin and that's really interesting given that last year, this would have been a laughable question. I don't know what Deng will develop into in this league. Is he Jamal Mashburn at his best? Is he capable of developing into a #1 scoring option on a contending team? I don't see that anymore.

Philadelphia 76ers / Ellis Signs! 6 years/$67MIL
« on: July 25, 2008, 09:18:20 AM »
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3504378

This is GREAT news for Stefanski and the Sixers. If Ellis got a little more than an average of $11MIL per year, I just can't see how Iguodala and his agent can try and demand more. Martin got 5 years/$55MIL, Ellis got 6 years/$67MIL... so how can Iguodala possibly demand 5 years/$70MIL anymore???

Philadelphia 76ers / Marcus Williams

http://www.nypost.com/seven/07212008/sports/nets/marcus_sees_job_fight_120813.htm

According to the NY Post with the Nets acquiring Keyon Dooling, Marcus Williams days in NJ could be numbered. When I consider that Lou Williams isn't really a PG, Miller has only a year left on his contract, and Speights has a solid summer league.... I think I would pull the trigger on a deal for Marcus Williams with Jason Smith as the bait.

Philadelphia 76ers / Iguodala's PPG w/ Brand
« on: July 12, 2008, 02:40:47 PM »
I've been doing some thinking about what kind of year we can expect from Andre Iguodala this upcoming season. On one hand, he averaged 19.9 PPG as the #1 option on a playoff team that didn't have any sort of a low post presence on it's roster. With Brand now taking on double-teams, Iguodala should get a lot cleaner looks at the basket in a half-court set which could lead to a higher FG% and perhaps more PPG. On the other hand, the combination of Brand eating into his shot attempts and the possibility of Thad Young have at least one plat a game drawn up for him might eat into Iguodala's PPG.

PPG aren't the end all/be all of an NBA player but I just wonder if you are expecting to keep his average were it was this past season or do you think he might slide down a little? I believe I'm expecting him to average around 16 or 17 PPG along with usual solid assist and rebound numbers. I do expect his FG% to increase this year and if it does, then I think this team will be in great shape.

Philadelphia 76ers / How Much Is LouWill Worth?
« on: July 09, 2008, 11:47:59 PM »
We've discussed Iguodala's value, Brand's value, Smith's value and now it's time to focus on Microwave Junior. What's a good deal (financially) for Lou? He's restricted so should we give him the cold shoulder and dare a team to offer him a 5 year deal for the full MLE? Should we give him something ABOVE the MLE? He's really hard to gauge right now but I think I'm hoping he somehow signs a 5 year/$25MIL deal.

Philadelphia 76ers / Is the Old Logo Our New Logo??
« on: July 09, 2008, 02:15:27 PM »
What's going on with our logo???

When Josh Smith was here for his visit, the jumbotron showed a picture of Smith with the old Sixers' logo next to his picture. They also had a scrolling background on that picture of the Sixers homecourt that also showed the old logo.

Now, I just got an e-mail announcing the 5PM Press Conference and BAM... this is what I get.

Press Conference Live at 5PM

Tune in to Comcast SportsNet at 5pm (EST) for a live press conference as the 76ers announce a major transaction from the Wachovia Center.

More News: Sixers move Carney, Booth

Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that the team has traded Calvin Booth, Rodney Carney, cash considerations and the rights to a conditional first-round pick received from Utah (acquired from the Jazz last December) to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for a protected second-round pick in 2010.

So that's twice this off-season that I've seen the old logo used at "the" logo of this team. I'm all for bringing not only the old logo back and not only the sweet red jerseys from the 80's... but I'm all for ditching the rabbit and bringing Big Shot back. The Lakers, Celtics, and Knicks have all made minimal changes to their uniform and logo over the years, we should have done the same. It's not to late to correct a wrong...

Philadelphia 76ers / Thorpe: Top 20 Rookies of 2008
« on: July 07, 2008, 02:39:15 PM »
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=thorpe_david&page=Rookies-080627

David Thorpe of ESPN.com, your boy NOT mime, has posted he Top 20 list for rookies in 2008. A key absentee from his list happens to be the Sixers pick at #16. Normally, you might want to get mad and upset over such a thing however... this is a blessing. You see, last year... the rookie expert didn't include Thaddeus Young on his Top 20 at the start and didn't have Young crack his Top 10 until February. Well, we all saw how that worked out so thank you, Thorpe, you have made my day.

Also... I find it interesting that he has Beasley over Oden and Rose at #5 behind Marc Gasol.

Philadelphia 76ers / Playoffs, we're talking Playoffs?!?!?
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:27:13 PM »
Alright... the off-season has BARELY even begun but I'm getting tired of talking about potential names of players who Ed may or may not go after depending on whether Golden State may or may not go after them as well or whether their current team may or may not re-sign them SO.... let's talk playoffs.

Right now, I rank the East like this....

1. Boston
2. Detroit
3. Toronto
4. Orlando
5. Cleveland
6. Washington (if healthy)
7. Miami
8. Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Chicago

If we sign Josh Smith AKA "He Who Must Not Be Named" from here on out... are the Sixers in the Top 7? I still don't think so. When you consider that Milwaukee has already added Jefferson and Joe Alexander... they'll probably be better. Charlotte has added Larry Brown and a Top 10 pick in Augustin (I'm not a big fan) so they'll be better than they were last season under Sam Vincent. If we do get "He Who Must Not Be Named" AKA "HWMNBN" than Atlanta probably falls out the the running for #8. Chicago is a complete mystery. They could be terrible like last season or all of that talent could come together and challenge Detroit for the division which would knock us out of the playoffs.

Point being, with or without HWMNBN... we don't really appear to be in all that much better of a position than we were this past season, do we? Sure the overall talent of the team has gotten better but should we expect to see that translate into more Ws than Ls this upcoming season??

Philadelphia 76ers / Plan B: Shooting Guard
« on: July 02, 2008, 10:09:42 PM »
SF76 posted his most recent update on the other board....

Quote
The Sixers think Jamont Gordon or McClellan will make the team this fall.

Josh Childress will be wined and dined here on Monday.

The Smith visit as you have seen on TV is going well....he will leave town with a verbal offer.....the Sixers are trying to move Green or Evans with the Utah pick as incentive around the league for any bit of cap relief they can get.

Maggette may not wait until the Josh Smith thing is over to sign with a contender for the mid level.

The backup plan if no PF is to move Thad to the 4 spot again and get a SG moving Andre Iguodala to the SF.

WE seem to have all our eggs in one basket right now.

I know Childress is coming in but am I wrong for thinking the Sixers should also bring in Ben Gordon? If we're going to go with a 2 guard, I'd prefer to get a scorer like Gordon than Childress. I also think Gordon could possibly co-exist in a backcourt with Iguodala if/when Miller leaves the team.

So much for the big splash or the PF. I think I can live with Thad and Speights splitting time at the 4 though.
