A superstar in the making, Jacoby Ellsbury
« on: May 04, 2004, 04:11:38 PM »
These are a couple of articles on a collegiate baseball player Jacoby Ellsbury.  Jacoby grew up in my hometown (pop 5370), and is playing baseball at OSU.  My brother was his baseball coach from 8 to 16, and the team he played on when he was 15, and that my brother coached, finished 2nd in Senior Little League Western Divisionals Tournament, which is one step removed from Regionals, and another step removed from Nationals.  The team they lost to in Divisional's was the eventual second place team at Nationals.
Jacoby is on track to get drafted in one of the first 2 rounds of the MLB draft next year.  He was rate the 27th best collegiate Sophmore starting this season, and was a Freshman All-American.  The Angels were prepared to draft him the 7th round coming out of high school, but he wanted to go to college, so they passed on him, and he was eventually the 23rd round pick of the DRays.
He is a great kid, very respectful.  His mother is Navajo Indian, so I would assume he will be the first Navajo Major Leaguer.  In talking with him, all the scouts have told him that expect him to be taken in the first 2 rounds.  Hits for average, hits for power, tremendous defensive player, great arm, and run like the a gazelle.  Incredible athlete, and really a very nice kid.  We are hoping he gets drafted by a West Coast team so we can go see him play.

A quotation is a handy thing to have about, saving one the trouble of thinking for oneself.

He should do well,  I don't think MLB has a drug testing policy, so his peace pipe smoking should slide under the radar. :P

No peyote for Jacoby.  His mom wouldn't put up with it.

No offense ziggy.

One of my pet peeves about sports is the way baseball is shoved down our throats.  Around the NBA trade deadline alot of stories had to do with MLB and some MINOR league player swaps.  Also the NFL has become annoying this year with news of teams allowing other teams to talk to their personnel/players becomming the lead story durring the NBA playoffs.

Ahhhhh....I feel much better.

No offense taken.  If you don't like baseball, then you don't like baseball.

I am sure a lot of baseball fans don't like the fact that the media spends a lot of time talking rumors in July, when nothing can happen until August, and then throughout August player movement in the NBA is all over the place taking away from baseball.  Of course NBA camps and preseason are during the baseball playoffs and Wrold Series.  Tit for tat I guess.

I listen to sports talk radio all year and that doesn't happen and at the least it's not a lead off story.

I like watching the playoffs but the regular season is very boring.  Can't really respect a sport with no salary cap.

The World Series always overshadows training camp..........unless you are wearing Dodger blue.  They are usually on fishing trips that time of year due to the uhhh, YANKEES HAVING TOO MUCH MONEY! YEA!
