Blair is a beast on the boards.  But several of his boards are rebounds of his own misses and then put backs.  He has a good nose for the ball.  He has a very limited offensive arsenal.  And is undersized for defending in the post although his wingspan helps.

He will compete with Mahinmi (NBDL 2 years ago, injured last) to compete for minutes.  IMO both will be very situational.  Right now Blair is just playing on talent.  To survive in the NBA he will need more.

IMO the starters (by year end) will be Duncan & McDyess with Bonner being the first off the bench due to his familiarity with the Spurs playbook...both offense and defense.  The Spurs also signed old man Theo Ratliff who will get minutes as the 4th big man.

The whole discussion of the Spurs big men and lack thereof last year is the most important offseason issue for the Spurs.  The injuries to Parker & Manu early last year put a lot of pressure on Duncan who averaged high minutes which led to his knee problems.  Jefferson should fit in nicely...he is an underrated defender that will thrive as the 3rd/4th offensive option.

Health is always an issue but then it is for every contender.  Parker played for France in the summer (but then Gasol played for Spain) and Pop has rested him in training camp.  Manu looks healthy but that can change with one misstep.  But if Garnett goes down again how strong will Boston be?  If Howard, LBJ, Kobe get injured their teams are toast.  No way to avoid injuries just have to hope your team is healthy come mid-April.

Reality will be peeing his pants thru November and December as Pop will give the younger guys more floor time.  One, to give them experience and see what they can accomplish.  Two, to let the older guys save their legs for April-June.  But unless they really impress...especially on defense...they will be down the depth chart a ways by January.

Reggie Evans gets a lot of them that way too - cause he misses the put bascks as well.

Blair could become a Makik Rose type player, if the Spurs are lucky he could blossom into a Milsap.  Milsap is better offensively but Malik was better, in his prime, on defense.  Blair looks more like a Malik, solid rebounder but he is very limited offensively and not impressive on defense.  IMO, barring an injury, Blair will spend most of his time on the bench.  The only time I see him on the floor is when there is an offensively oriented lineup on the floor.  Tony, Manu, Jefferson can all score so that's the best time for him to be on the court.  I don't see the Spurs playing him along side TD for two reasons.  1-TD does not like to play center and I don't think Blair can play center.  2-TD needs room in the paint so Blair would allow an additional defender to crowd TD and Blair his no range so he can't spread the floor and his defender will crowd TD no matter where Blair is on the floor.

It will be tough for this kid to get playing time but if Bonner can't get it going from the outside Pop might prefer to put Blair on the floor for rebounds and hustle points.

If he gets minutes it will be from Bonner.  And with Duncan on the bench.  In November I could see Pop experimenting with him, McDyess, Parker, Manu/Mason, and Jefferson.  He runs the floor and hits the offensive glass the hardest.

November and December will be interesting to watch the Spurs.  Pop has a lot of combos to experiment with and a lot of guys who need to learn the Spurs sets both off & def.  Tonight's game against a Greek team is the first time Duncan/Parker/Manu have played together in a game since last March (maybe April).

Another god game...although I noticed he only had 4 boards:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/viewcast/2009/10/11/27738_viewcast_recap.html

MIAMI(AP) San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich quickly pointed out that DeJuan Blair only had one defensive rebound Sunday night.

''Not good enough,'' Popovich said, barely keeping a straight face.

So far, Blair is showing the Spurs - and probably the rest of the NBA - that he's certainly good enough.

The rookie scored 28 points on 11 of 13 shooting, 15 of those points coming in the final 7 minutes, and the Spurs erased an 11-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to beat the Miami Heat 95-93 in a preseason game.

''He's a real mobile, agile player, even though he's got the girth that he has,'' Popovich said of the 6-foot-7, 265-pound Blair, who's noticably slimmer than he was playing college ball at Pittsburgh. ''It's a heck of a gift.''

George Hill added 12 points and Michael Finley scored 10 for San Antonio (1-1 preseason), which played without Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili .

Daequan Cook scored 20 points, Mario Chalmers added 17 and Michael Beasley finished with 16 for Miami (0-3). The Heat were without several regulars, including reigning NBA scoring champion Dwyane Wade .

Cook tried to win it with a 3-pointer at buzzer, but his shot bounced off the rim.

Blair's steal and layup with 3 minutes left helped the Spurs take control, and further illustrated why he's looked like the steal of the NBA draft so far in preseason. The 37th overall pick last June had 16 points and 19 rebounds in San Antonio's only other preseason game so far, not including the Spurs' win in an exhibition last week over Greek club Olympiakos.

''It's just hard work and my teammates trusting in me and just trying to adjust to the system,'' Blair said. ''I'm not showing it, but it's problems for me. Adjusting to the system is kind of hard, but I'm getting it.''

As Blair got dressed after the game, guard Keith Bogans was at the next locker, having a sandwich and some Doritos. Blair lamented that neither of those are among his culinary choices these days, as he tries to slim further down.

It's paying off.

''He's a character guy. He's a quality guy,'' Popovich said. ''He's a hard worker and obviously, he has a passion for the game.''

Both sides were far from being full strength, with at least two probable starters unavailable for each team.

For the Heat, Wade (left ribs), Jermaine O'Neal (left foot) and Quentin Richardson (left ankle) were among those sitting out. The Spurs opted to leave Duncan and Ginobili at home to rest.

Wade went through a pregame workout on the Heat practice court, then received treatment. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said the team doesn't believe the muscle strain will be a long-term concern for Wade.

''He's feeling better,'' Spoelstra said. ''He was actually able to do quite a few exercises in the weight room (Saturday) and that's going to be part of the proactive approach that we take with him to try to gain more flexibility in this area and try to build up some strength.''

Miami was also without backup point guard Chris Quinn (right foot). The Heat - who insist that they're committed to Chalmers being the starter again - held internal discussions Saturday about adding depth at that position, and Spoelstra said more talks will take place Monday.

Chalmers scored 11 of his points in the third quarter, when Miami stretched its lead to 73-62 entering the final 12 minutes.

NOTES: Both teams are off until Wednesday, when the Spurs will host the Los Angeles Clippers and the Heat face Oklahoma City at Tulsa, Okla. ... Haslem's contract with Converse expired Oct. 1, but is continuing to wear the company's shoes. He said he may take a one-year deal with Converse ''so I can be a free agent in everything next summer.'' ... Among the new amenities in Miami's arena are upgraded HD screens on the scoreboard. ... Parts of the arena's highest level were curtained off, which the Heat will do at some home games this season. Depending on the night, capacity will be listed between 16,500 and 19,600.

But Mike Finley grabbing one defensive board in 3 games is good enough.  ::)
Man i hope that egotistical jackass stubborn Popavich does not ruin Blair.
Yes his primary role is to board.  Doesn't mean you have to dick with his offense.

Reading is not your forte.

If he really was joking, great.

Failed attempt at lame "fail".

YES, he was joking Reality.   The part about keping a straight face was a clear indication that he was saying it tongue in cheek. Blaire is the Spurs prize from this draft. By by no means has a problem with Blaire, after his first game and now this one why in the world would he not be happy with his performance??

Good!  Because it appears Blair can bring some much needed frontline O in addition to his forte rebounding.  Did a nice spin move vs the Rockets. I'll see if i can YouTube it over.
