I might piss off some fans here, but Philly isn't/wasn't just Blue Collar it was white and Catholic.  The Phillies were late to add black players to the team and so were the Eagles. Not too many Blacks in Hockey!

The 76'ers were black, and while Phila. had a large black population, they had other concerns than spending money to watch basketball.

The Big 5 and the feeder parochial schools where also white, Catholic institutions, St. Joe, Villanova, LaSalle.

When the Sixers won their first title, the fan favorite wasn't Wilt or Hal Greer, it was sixth man Billy Cunningham, white and Catholic, I think out of Brooklyn by way of N. Carolina.

As the City grew the whites moved out to the suburbs and became Hockey fans and forgot about their basketball roots. Given the history, and how fans are made the way they are by the families they grew up in. Phila. sports fans like the Eagles and Phillies first, then the Flyers and then the Sixers.

I always liked basketball better, but I'm in the minority. I don't know too many Sixers fans here. My friends like the Eagles, won't even spend their money on a baseball game. My nephew like Basketball, but he's a LeBron fan.

Not sure what being white has to do with being blue collar - and philly isn't really that catholic any more (and the suburbs count and I went to a high school that was about 95% jewish) - but I agree that it isn't blue collar - and hasn't been for a long while

I was talking about how they PERCEIVE themselves.

I never meant to make it a racial issue - but you seem to want to make it a racial issue - and that's fine...but my implication had nothing to do with race

I was just explaining why Phila. fans like Football and Baseball more, not making it an issue, but noting that it was a factor in why they are the way they are.  Not sure where you were in the 'Burbs, but there is a significant Catholic population in Bucks county and Lansdale. Mostly people who grew up in the City and moved out and up.

Montgomery County - and Lower Merion High School (1990)...

And I admit there can be racial issues with Philadelphia sports fans (fueled by a popular radio dj who himself is kind of a racist ass and has the IQ of a dead fish) but I'm not a sociologist - and I don't think you are either - so we both have our opinions.

Does Philadelphia have racial problems?  Sure they do - show me a city in america that doesn't ahve race problems - chicago isn't exactly known for getting along but the popularity of the bulls lasted longer than just the jordan years - LA has a strong laker base that persists a bit more through leaner years - and 'gets back on the wagon' faster than philadlephia basketball fans.

Texas is a notoriously racial disharmony state but when there teams even start to win the fan base seems turned around and stays around...

I don't think it's any one particular thing - i just think in terms of opularity in PHiladlephia the NBA is fourth of the four pro sports franchises that won't get put out of business by a recesison

I don't think Phila. is more overtly racist than anywhere else, this is more history than where we are now. I do, however, think that McNabb gets criticized and is unnapreciated more because he is black (also because he's not a rah-rah type of guy). I mean, he's the best QB in the history of the franchise and should be a fan favorite because of what he's accomplished. Fans were more enthusiastic about Ron Jaworkski who accomplished far less.

Allen Iverson got put through the ringer in Phila. A lot of fans were for him, and quite a few never accepted him.

To be sure, the sportswriters and the radio personalities are all about controversy and fan the flames wherever they see weakness, remember what they did to Eric Lindross, Mike Schmidt, etc.

But the country does have a racist past, and we shouldn't deny it's impact on us now. Bill Russell, once of my most favorite players of all time- and that's saying something since he was a Celtic, had his home ransacked in Boston, and had racist comments painted on the walls.

Long time ago now, but these things did happen.

Well Iverson didn't help himself and Eskin had it out for him

I can't believe the game isn't being televised.  I mean, this could be the much anticipated 76er debut of Primoz Brezec.  We're talking about history here.

Seriously, hoping Young gets some touches tonight.  Would also love to see Jrue get some minutes next to some starters.

Does NBA TV have pre season games this year - that's the one thing i always found idiiotic - why don't they at least put on the pre season games - they got nothing else to show?

Are they doing those 'practice' things this year?

NBA TV had the Chicago/Utah game on yesterday, but for the most part they are running non-stop re-runs of 'real training camp.'

That's a negative.  They did Atlanta, Washington, LAL, Boston, and Denver.
