Game 3: Sixers vs. Magic: The refs are on our side now!
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:02:01 PM »
Do we go up 2-1 tomorrow?  Do we stop the unstoppable tandem of Courtney Lee and Anthony Johnson?  Do we suddenly remember how to shoot FTs?  Does Willie Green sprain an ankle trying to use the bathroom much to the glee of everybody but Willie Green?  All questions to be answered soon!

I think the series comes down to Willie Green and the bench player's contributions.

We know what we're going to get from Dalembert and it's not going to change much.

We know that between the two Andres and Thad were going to get about 70 pts.

What we don't know is where the rest of the scoring will come from.  Usually we can count on Willie for 8, but he's really been choking in this series. Lou Williams is at the top of my list for players off the bench, if we can get 15 out of him, we're in good shape most of the time, if he gets to 20 it's probably a lock we'll win.

Royal Ivey, well I liked that three the one game, and wasn't too happy in the next when he missed one. I thought and still think that he's not good enough to be in the NBA.

Donyell is an X factor, some nights he's on, some nights he's not.  He actually matches up fairly well with Orlando's bigs. I think with him out there to spread the floor the lanes would be more open.

Reggie Evans, usually the first big off the bench, has been absolutely horrible in this series. He doesn't match up well with Orlando's taller, finesse players is virtually spastic on offense and makes terrible decisions.  The coaching staff would be wise to not use Reggie as the default big, at least for this series.

Marreese Speights (What? you didn't think I was going to mention him  ;D)  You can't really say what would happen since he's been out for such a short amount of time, but I did notice that his length bothered Lewis and that he scored over Howard inside. It seems to me, a layman that he would be an ideal choice, since the two primary concerns with the Sixers are scoring and rebounding and he's generally well-suited to both.

Theo Ratliff, I always loved Theo as a player, undersized but a hard sincere worker, he seems better against Howard in this series than Sam. However, since neither of them is an offensive juggernaut, it makes little difference which one is in, but Theo can actually catch a pass, so I'd use him with the 2nd group when they're having trouble scoring.

The refs aren't on anyone's side, I hope we get the benefit of a few more, but really the Sixers lost this one on their own.  The bench and Willie were incredibly bad.  It's ok if one or two don't produce, since usually the others do.  It's very rare that none of them produce and we don't score enough.

I think this is on the coach's more than anything. the Andres and Thad can score because they can take their man off the dribble. Most of the rest of them need to spot up and shoot. The staff needs to devise a plan to get these players into the space they need to be effective.  The one thing that would destroy the Magic would be to set someone big up in the lane to distribute or threaten the basket. If Howard doesn't come out, he shoots the short shot. If he does the big looks to the wings coming in from the right or the left for an easy basket off a screen. The only problem is the timing, the big can't stay in the lane for too long without doing something, so everyone else needs to be in position first.

If only the Sixers had someone who could operate in the post.... we have two, Thad and Marreese and the staff should get busy figuring out how to attack Howard with these players.

Up 11 at half, totally dominated them.  My topic title seems to be correct, the Magic have been bitching at the refs after every play on both ends.  Gotta keep taking it hard to the rack and we have them beat.

This game the Sixers offense is back on track, they haven't been this in-synch for quite some time.  Orlando is ordinarily a very good defensive team, but the Sixers speed is too much for them.

If the Magic can't find a way to stop the Sixers from getting to the rim, they're not only going to loose this game, but the series.  When everyone is playing well, the Sixers are impossible to defend.

Sixers came out in the 3rd quarter and have PUSHED the lead.  This is crazy.  This is insane.

Another tight one.  Gotta make our FTs.  If Howard can make his, we need to make ours.

They may have more talent, but we simply want this game more.   This defensive effort by Dalembert is reason #1 to hold on to him this summer.  He has singlehandedly shut down Howard down the stretch.

Almost lost this game on free throws.  Iggy made a great shot, but for missing those free throws he doesn't deserve the BOS title.

Thad had a bad game, but came up big when it counted, biggest shot of his career.

Still a very tight series in spite of the 2-1 advantage. Sixers could not close the door on this team, and they were soooo close. Orlando did find another level on defense, and the Sixers did not adjust. This is playoff basketball, and they better figure out how to get Orlando back on their heels on defense.  Orlando doesn't allow fast-breaks they send players back. You can't force the ball in, you have to execute. Why the F don't we see Speights in there?  It's so friggin stupid.

WOW.  2nd game winner with 2 secs left.  Can anyone say good karma?  How great does it feel not being on the receiving end of a game winner?

Thad 'Pimp City' Young sneaks it past the reigning defensive player of the year and the Sixers play dragon slayers and take the series lead.  Sunday's game is huge.

Again poor clock management determines the outcome of a game.  Orlando left 6.9 seconds left, more than enough time for the Sixers to get off a good shot. The better the defense, the less time after the shot, and with 2.0 sec. and no time-outs (Dumb SVG) the magic were done.

It should be noted that the Sixers did the same thing at the end of the first half and third quarter. They like closing out periods and it is a very smart habit to develop.

Orlando is not more talented than the Sixers, currently it is pretty even, with a slight edge to the Sixers. The edge would be larger if we used Marreese, but the coaching staff has taken him out of the equation, in spite of how effective he was when the Sixers were on their winning streak during the regular season playing out the 4th quarter.  What the hell happened to that? WHY did they stop playing someone who is exactly the right player for a position where we are weak or short. Why would they go away from something that was working. WTF?

Wow.  I completely disagree.  I thought he played horribly today.  He's very, very bad at allowing post players to establish position before catching the ball.

Wow.  I completely disagree.  I thought he played horribly today.  He's very, very bad at allowing post players to establish position before catching the ball.

I thought he did a great job deflecting many entry passes and did as good as job as could be expected handling Howard with little help and no fouling.  Looking at the PbP (along with knowing the situation from the game):

Dalembert entered with 7:31 left and played the rest of the game.  He blocked a Hedo layup, forced a Howard travel, Alston missed two straight layups (one of which was clearly Dalembert-altered), Howard gets a putback dunk on a ball Dalembert tried to block and got no weakside help (he blamed Thad, although it was really Iggy's fault, but Iggy's not going to block out Superman, period), Hedo misses layup (don't remember), Dalembert blocks Hedo layup, and Howard got 4 FT attempts near the end of the game, both on Willie Green fouls when their defense was basically "let Howard get the ball and foul him so we can't get burned by a 3".

Now, you can hate on Dalembert all you want, but I really don't know what you want from him.  When you hold Superman to one shot attempt and 2 sets of trips to the line, you're obviously doing something right, considering that the only two other baskets the Magic got in that stretch were 3s from Shard, and neither could possibly be construed as Dalembert's fault (one was a Willie Green switch on to him on a pick and roll and one was a miscommunication between Thad and Lou).  In fact, I'd argue that Dalembert nearly singlehandedly won us the game defensively in that last 7:31.  I'm not arguing he was good all game (he was pretty much abused in the first quarter), but in that last 7:31, when we couldn't buy a point, he stopped the Magic from doing ANYTHING inside.

To tk76: SHHHHHHHHHHHHH DON'T TELL HIM THAT D: But yeah, pretty funny that Howard stuffed Thad's right hand completely only to see Thad twirl it in with his left.

To rick: The Magic are more talented than us.  They've just happened to be fairly cold except for one small stretch in the 3rd quarter.  At any point, they can re-find their 3 point stroke and we're cooked.  And the reason Mo isn't playing is because he's proven he can't guard wing players on the perimeter and he's not nearly strong enough to deal with Superman.  It's a terrible matchup for him.  I pretty much totally agreed with the minutes tonight.

EDIT: I just looked at the boxscore, and noticed that Thad happened to lead the team in +/-.  I wonder how much of that is coincidence and how much of that is he and Iggy being able to totally remove Hedo and Shard from the game while nobody else on the Sixers can guard either.
