now i'd rather trade miller for value and concede that they are at least a year or two away

Would that make the Brand signing a mistake?  I think he will be a good player through most of the duration of his contract, but...

I realize it is stupid, but I will always wonder if this team should have instead tried to trade for Camby and then been another one of the million teams to shoot for the big FA signing in the Summer of 2010.

I realize it would be a pipe dream, but you'd think they would have a good shot at landing one of the superstars if they had max dollars and their young core entering their prime.  In fact, if they could somehow dump Sam, they would be in a Piston like cap situation, where they could almost free up enough $'s in 2010 for 2 max contracts.

Of course that is all hypothetical.

They have a very good player in Brand, and now they have to shuffle the pieces until they fit.  They could end up being a very good team, but I doubt they will be a contender in the next 3 years, unless Young is off the charts good.

OT- Any chance that "PowerElite" at RealGM is the same as Sendem?  Maybe they are just similar.

Either way, I wish he and Geiger could just find a room.  Its getting to be just like last year, except the good posters have all left.

This retreat is turning into my primary home for sixers talk for that exact reason.

I still say going into summer 2010 with some tradeable contracts worth value is not a bad idea.  A S&T for a top flight guy like Bosh, Wade, and especially Amare is very possible.  It won't matter to James whether he gets the full max siince his endorsements will dwarf his actual salary if he goes to a big market, and he will.  We could still be players in 2010 using a S&T, but without the complete hit or miss approach some teams are taking.  I expect Brand to play well through at least 4 or maybe all 5 years of his deal (not that much of a high riser to begin with, he can compensate with skill and guile and strength as he gets older), so even if we don't do anything in 2010 he will still be around and productive as Young and Speights grow into their games, and at the least we should have cap space in 2011 before re-signing Young when Reggie, Green and Sammy come off the cap.  Kudos to Eddie if he gets them off sooner without taking worse crap back.  PG is the key, but that is the subject for another thread.

I don't see how we could be a max player in 2010.  (That is why I brough up the whole Camby instead of Brand thing, since he expires in 2 years.)

Right now they have 55M tied up in 9 players.  Fortunately there are no cap holds, but it would be still hard to find a way to clear the 18M they would need to offer a max deal.

Getting rid of Sam would get them to 47M (after 2 more 1st round picks), but that assumes they don't take on any more salary after Miller leaves.  More likely they trade Miller, or at least sign a shooter to a long term deal using the MLE this summer.

That means they have to find a taker for  Evans +/- Green to get to where they need to be.  Clearing Sam, Green and Evans off the cap in this current environment soundws impossible- esp now that Isaiah is gone :)

I am talking more than a token trade, build a real S&T around someone like Iggy to get someone like Bosh or use someone like Speights or Young (think Al Jefferson) plus Sam and Lou to get a guy like Amare, and maybe you do that in 2009 with a nervous team if you are confident you can re-sign the player.

I was looking at Min for a possible destination for Sam.  They have a ton of 1-2 yr contracts (rumored to be willing to move to get Wallace), and would be well served moving Al Jefferson to PF.

Do you think drafting Love means they would not want Sam?

I presume peiple have no interest in Telfair, and I'm not sold on Foye- but at least it could be a landing place for Sam.

I guess that is an option if one of the stars wants a 6 year deal- which would necessitate a sign and trade.

tk:

I like Foye...some people believe he's not a true PG, but he's got decent size, my sense is he's a pretty good defender, and even though he's not a pure shooter like, say, Hinrich, he's a scorer - which is what I think we need next to Iggy at the 2.

I would prefer Foye/Collins (expiry) for Sam, but I think I would even take Foye/Cardinal for Sam.

Kevin McHale is one of the few truly horrible gms left in the league so he might be willing to take sam

If Brand sets a pick for Foye, is he a good enough shooter to force the defender to try and get over top the screen?  if not, his defender will drop below the pick, taking away Foye's driving lane, and clogging things up for Brand.

Foye is a decent shooter, but not great.  Are you convinced he would work?

We need to start sending letters to McHale, extoling the virtue of a Sam-Love-Jefferson fromntcour rotation.  They need a shot blocker, right ;)

No...I'm not.  But I like our chances of him becoming a good PG more than a LOT of the crap in that list that's in the other thread on this board...

Plus - you need to find a team/GM that is stupid enough to take Sam.

I get the feeling that Charlotte and Minny are the best possibilities given they have "C" who would be better suited at PF, and have management who might think Sam is the answer.

I would LOVE to send Sam back to LB.

How did LB feel about Sam when he was here?
