Coaches
« on: November 21, 2008, 12:39:49 PM »
This is mostly copied from what I posted at RealGM.

Assuming the Sixers need a change from Mo, who is out there?

Here is my take on types of coaches, and what the Sixers need:

Type 1: Upbeat Rebuilder:
Example: Mo Cheeks: Good for Sixers right after AI trade and other rebuilding young teams
-Player friendly coach who helps young players find a comfort zone where they can improve. Keeps players motivated regardless of W/L. Lacks structure and not overly tactical. This again benefits younger players allowing them the just play without overthinking the game and without risking ending up in the coaches doghouse for every mistake.

Type 2: Teacher/Tactician:
Examples: Rick Carlisle, Hubie Brown, Lary Brown- Coaches that demand execution and can instal more complex offensive and defensive schemes- sometimes at the expense of ego/doghouse issues.
-Good for a team like the Sixers are now. They have good character, talented players. The pieces now have to be deployed in a more structured system to get to the next level.

Type 3: Gimmick Coaches:
Examples: Jim O'Brian, Dantonni, Doug Mo- Coaches that have a certain novel system that players have to adapt to. The system goes against some kind of conventional hoops wisdom.
-Not necessarily good or bad per say. Can be successful with the right collection of players, but has rarely (never?) resulted in championships. Probably not the best course for the Sixers given they don't have much roster/cap flexibility at this point.

Type 4: Zen Masters:
Exeamples: Riley, Red Aurbach, Phil Jackson- Coaches that are well suited for integarting big ego, high profile players into a team concept. get to coach the best teams and make huge salaries.
-The Sixers probably are not in need for this type of coach. In fact, their young players probably need more of the teacher type for a few years before they would benefiot form a "Zen Master."

Type 2 is what this team needs, although you want to grab somebody on the way up before they get the huge ego like LB developed.  I don't see the ego issues on this team that would require a Phil Jackson type.  I don't have much use for the gimmick coaches.  The guy I always wonder about is Tom Thibodeau.  he never seems to get the head coaching jobs, but every one wants him to be their top assistant (Mike Arbuckle syndrome?).  It may have something to do with his personality, but as a superior defensive coach I would look into him.  There are worse guys who could be given a chance, plus it would weaken a division opponent which never hurts.

I never really liked this question because it assumes hiring a known quantity (to the fans) when the sixers should be able to pull from a wider pool, all those assistants that would maek good coaches, the sixers should have some inside scoop on them that fans obviously wont...as long as they don't hire a name just because he's a name and they do a thorough job search i'll give them the benefit of the doubt personally.

Lots of good buzz about thibodeau out there, of course mid season would be unlikely :)

I think a mid-season change is unlikely anyway, at best we would get Lynam as an interim guy.  A guy like Thibodeau will need an off-season to install his system to make it effective.

Talking about assistants...  Nothing wrong with Lynam as an assistant per say, but I would prefer to have an assistant who is known for implementing some sort of known offensive or defensive system.  Especially when the head coach is completely lacking in that area.

Lynam as a head coach would not accomplish anything.

It doesn't guarantee success (look at the Wiz) but it would be a good start.

Eddie Jordan is now available too, these guys are dropping like flies.

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards fired coach Eddie Jordan on Monday after a 1-10 start to the season.

A team spokesman said player development director Ed Tapscott will replace Jordan on an interim basis.

Tapscott will run the Wizards' practice Monday.

They can't make any changes with the players, so they fire the coach.  I can't imagine them playing any harder under Tapscott than they did for EJ.  Jordan took an extremely beat up Wizards team to 43 wins and a post season appearance last year.... they've just had the worst luck with injuries.

Who was the bright mind who gave Jamison 4 years and Arenas 6 years?  That's brutal.  Great job putting together a big 3 who can't stay on the floor.

Jordan was supposedly running a versioin of the Princeton offence for the Bullets.  Does anyone think that type of offense could be a auccess for the Sixers?  They don't exactly have the greatest passing bigmen, but they do have some potentially good cutters.

Yes, the GM probably made some bad deals, but eddie jordan suffered from unrealistic expectations of his team, the GM will probably get the axe next but the coach went first.

How many coaches did the sixers get rid of before they get rid of king?  Sometimes the GM gets a longer leash than the coach
