Fantasy League Offseason Rules & Dates
« on: April 14, 2004, 02:17:35 PM »
http://fantasy.phillyarena.net/offseason.htm

This is pretty much my final decision on these topics. We've debated them, I've spent quite a large amount of time thinking about them, and I've run them by a lot of other very experienced people. I've tried to compromise, listen to everyone's concerns, and do what's fair for everyone. I've compromised/changed on all my rules, except on offseason trading. I honestly think this is the best possible outcome.

In fact, most of these changes have severely hurt myself, personally. The change to not have the winner of the consolation bracket have the most chance for the first pick, considering I'm 1 day away from winning that. As well as the limit on the amount of years you can hold the rights to a keeper, since I feel I have as good of 2 keepers as anyone in the league (a quality in which basically cost me the playoffs this year).

Unless there are any serious objectives (and stuff I overlooked), this is how it will stand.

People, please stay in contact, giving me updated stuff for the contact list (I want to add on there Y!M and AIM names) and staying on the official message boards ( http://www.phillyarena.net/forums/index.php?showforum=2 ) over the summer, as that's where Dates, Trades and announcements will be made.

And Drom, please give me either your (or your successor's) e-mail address ASAP.

I have a question/comment regarding keeper contracts.  But with 4/15 upon me I haven't had the time to properly formulate my thoughts.  I'll post something next week.

I don't agree with the draft picks limitation.

While I see your point regarding enforcing the one-to-one player trade or two-for-one player trade restrictions, I don't agree with having to enforce a one-for-one with draft picks.

Why can't I trade two or three draft picks for one good player/keeper?  I could then shore up my roster on the FA market to get to the 12 player requirement.

Because then the other person would have 13 players ;)

That rule stands.

If you want to improve keepers, do something like:

your inferior keeper + 3rd round pick for better keeper + 5th round pick.

Negotiate with the moving up/down of picks is enough to get trades like that to go through.  You can add more than 1 pick, but get another one back as well.

There's enough lee-way.

My only suggestion has to do with the "contracts" for our keepers.  For this first year only I think we should give a 1 year (next season) and a 2 year (2 more seasons) contract.  In the following season each owner will then name a new keeper for their 2 year contract.  This will help to stagger the time that different players will hit the free agent market.  Every team will always have both a one year & 2 year player under contract.  Each manager will always lose one of their free agents each year.

Also I feel that we should maintain these contracts even through trades.  In other words, if Joe V names Duncan as his 2 year contract and then we trade at the deadline I should only get the remaining 1+ years left on Duncan's contract.....not 2 full years.  Trades should not extend a players contract and delay him from becoming a free agent (i.e. NO contract extensions).  If not then the top players will stay with the same managers over & over.

An example:  Team 1 has Duncan.  Team 2 has Garnett.  Both managers name these players as their 2 year contracts.  Just before the trading deadline of the second year Duncan & Garnett are traded for each other.  If the owners get to keep these players for 2 years then all they have to do is trade again at the end of 2 years.  Duncan & Garnett will never hit the free agent market and only the same 2 managers will ever have them.

Let's say someone has brand, they declare them their 2 year keeper.  Now that person gets Duncan.  First of all, he can now only declare Duncan that one year.  Second of all, it has little to do with what keeper is your best and 2nd best keeper, but when you acquire that keeper.

second of all, what if you have brand (the aforementioned 2 year keeper) and you trade for duncan, who's declared as a 2 year keeper, and you retain contracts.  in a bit if a pickle, no?

Besides, I don't really envision a whole lot of keepers (especially upper tier keepers) slipping through free agency.  Someone with said keeper will want to get value, either another top of the line keeper or to find someone to overpay (and thus give them a better shot at this years title) for the rights to that keeper.

I think we're trying to overanalyze things.  Right now, the rules are pretty much set unless we find an oversight.  Not that I'm being a stickler, or power hungry, but rules need to be defined so we have something to go by.  This can't be debated upon forever.
