Could Michael Phelps play NBA hoop if he wanted to?
« on: September 11, 2008, 12:13:09 PM »
jemagee says the diet is old news, hence many of you may not even read hence the new thread.

Could Michael Phelps play NBA hoop if he had wanted to and started playing 4 years ago?
For that matter if he started practicing now for 1-2-3-4 years.

"Phelps is between 187 pounds (85 kilogram) and 195 pounds (88 kilogram) with height of close to 6 foot 4-inch.  He has big feet (US shoe size of 14), broad shoulders, large chest, long arms and his wing span is nearly 80 inches (about 3 to 4 inches longer than his height). His upper body tapers down to an almost girlish waist with less than 30 inches. With such a tall and lean body shape, he is a human fish built for swimming, and winning too if I may add."

Your joking with this right?

All historical evidence to the contrary?

(And Sam Dalembert as evidence against the argument as well)

:D :D Always happy to work with you two on gaining insight.

You are joking, right?

You don't think someone with Phelps athleticism has a chance to transfer that to hoop?  Well he does.

Your argument is simplistic and ignores so many variables and inherent abilities, it's laughable.  No offense to phelps but just cause he can swim very fast doesn't mean he has hand eye coordination, lateral quickness or peripheral vision good enough to play basketball.

You're probably one of those people who buys into the delusion that you 'can't coach height' so you should ignore the flaws in games of people because they are 7' tall

Does it mean he does not have hand eye coordination, lateral quickness or peripheral vision good enough to play basketball?  "Because you state it, it must be so."  That is laughable.

You're probably just making this up.

Just because someone is good at one sport does not mean they will be good at another.  Basketball is much more then athletic ability.  Even guys who get by on their athletic ability in this league still have been conditioned to be a basketball player.  Phelps is a swimmer.

He is PG height.  Since when does swimming fast give you the ability to run an offense?!

Conversely, just because someone excells at one sport does not disqualify them from excelling at another.
See pro stars who excelled in multiple sports.

To be sure, at this point we don't know the answer and i am speculating.
But i like Phleps potential.
6'4" with a 6"8" wingspan is plenty of hoop potential.
And you of all people mention nothing of Defense.
Defense wins championships you know.  ;)

No it doesn't.  He might be okay at basketball but to play in the NBA?  You need to have a basketball players mentality and be conditioned as a basketball player to be pro.  So in that regard, since he has not been, he wouldn't work out.

Stupid!  What else is new?

"Not his story"

"My people's culture was strong, it was pure"

I think Beno Undies and Sasha Vujac have better NBA physiques then Phelps.

You should have told sophmore Michael Jordan he just started too late.  Might as well give up.  :D

Could Phelps play NBA level hoops?  Possibly.

Could Tim Duncan be a world class swimmer?  He was training to until a hurricane hit the Virgin Islands.

Could Michael Jordan play MLB?  NO!  Thus proving that excellance in one professional sport does not translate into success in another.
It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave.  Keep on thinking free.

:D :D shooting fish in a bowl.
Not only did Deon play in both the NFL and MLB, he did it in the same day Cousin Lurker.
NLCS to boot.
Deon played in both the Superbowl and the World Series.
And since we can no doubt que you and Cousin WoWkoast to come back with some spin about how Deon sucked in baseball, here are some irrefutable facts:
Sanders played 641 games with 4 teams. During his most productive year, 1992, he hit .304 for the Braves, and stole 26 bases in 97 games. During the 1989 season, he hit a home run and scored a touchdown in the NFL in the same week, the first player to do so.
So i guess we need to take back Deon Sanders World Series ring.  ;)
