Fine with theplayer.

The signing does mean the team loses 1 million under the cap for the next two years if Iguodala signs the QO- but hopefully that is unlikely.

I suggested him as a possible minimum salary signing in an earlier thread.  He is a top-flight defender with good size and decent athleticism who can play strong D at both guard positions.  Not much on offense, decent three point percentage, but not stellar and not high volume three point shooting.  More of an end of the bench glue guy/defensive specialist who will throw in a basket or two.  Might fit in well on a second unit pressure defense/fast-break package.  He had some good games as a fill-in for larger minutes due to injuries last year in Milwaukee, but overall he is a 10-15 minute a game guy at most.  He was way over-exposed as a starter on some bad teams in Atlanta, but has decent value as a limited role player.  He signed for the minimum ($800,000K-ish) for 2 years.  I don't like the second year much, but it is the minimum salary at least and he is only 26.  To get some of the better minimum guys to sign now, which are all we can sign, we may have to give one or two a second year on their contract.  A smart signing for the deeper (10-12) part of the bench if that second year doesn't come back to bite us like Booth's did.

This fits in with what SF76 reported a long time ago. The Sixers signed a backup PG for the minimum and so I guess this means 2 things....

1) Kevin Ollie's run in Philly is over

2) The Sixers will have to obtain a shooter via a trade

Not necessarily.

Ollie can run a team for extended minutes in at a professional NBA level, albeit without the ability to shoot or any athleticism.  Ivey is lsited as a PG, but his team-directing skills are very limited.  Many times he played at SG and even SF for Milwaukee last year, he's a very versatile defender.  He is certainly capable of guarding PG's, but if Lou or Miller misses a few games and you need a back-up to run the team for 15-18 mpg, I woild rather have Ollie doing it than Ivey.  Ivey is more of the kind of a guy you play next to Lou W. for short periods because of his size and defensive prowess.  Our vets at 10-12 on the roster will likely all be specialists for specific situations.  Ollie and Ivey have very different specialties and could fill up the bench together along with a FA shooter like Kareem rush, a trade acquisition like Steve Novak and a rookie or two like Jamont Gordon.

We can only sign players using the minimum from here on out, correct?

I see what you're saying Skates but I do believe Ivey will get what few minutes Ollie received last season. Either way, I love KO's leadership and would like for him to be a part of this team.

Does anyone know if McKie will be returning to the bench this season?

Also... will Royal Ivey get a press conference? I mean, does that happen when you sign someone to a minimum deal? If so, it'll be another chance to see if the Sixers have another throwback jersey... errr CURRENT JERSEY... made for him.

meh.  I don't have a problem with it, since it's the minimum, but I don't really have any expectations either.  I don't really think he's all that good of a defender.  Average at best, and obviously isn't going to bring much offensively.

then again, I can't say I've seen all too many of his minutes lately, so maybe he'll surprise me.

With a name like Royal Ivey he sounds like he should be a minor villian in some cheesy super-hero flick.

I still can't believe that 2nd year cost the team a 1st round pick and the ability to get someone back for Carney(Supposedly Memphis had interst in Carney, but was unwilling to take Booth- man those guys are cheap.)

LOL! I love it and I'm sure Warner Brothers is willing to greenlight this idea if you can come up a title to the film.

By the way, if we were going to obtain a bigger PG that could play alongside Lou, I would have preferred that we traded Jason Smith to Memphis for Crittenton. According to cnnsi.com, Smith does have some value around the league.

4. The Sixers have some trade bait

The signing of Elton Brand has left Philadelphia with a bit of a logjam at power forward. With Brand, who has averaged 38.3 minutes in his career, expected to log heavy minutes at the position, incumbents Reggie Evans and Jason Smith will be fighting for the backup minutes.

If Sixers GM Ed Stefanski is looking to trade one (and there have been no indications that he is), Smith has value. The 6-10, 240-pound forward averaged 15.6 points and 8.0 rebounds in a superb summer league. Several scouts were impressed by Smith's improved ability to knock down the mid-range jump shot with regularity.

"He's a starter in this league," an Eastern Conference scout said. "No question."

Smith will make $1.3 million this season, and with team options at $1.4 and $2.2 million the following two years, he is one of the league's best bargains.

I'm curious about this guy and never seen him play.  How does he compare to, let say, Greg Buckner?
