Lame acting?  Yeah, I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there.

Will Smith was amazing in that.  The movie (script wise and translation from the book) was probably a B.  Solid, but not spectacular.  But Will Smith was fantastic.  Overall I think it's a good movie.  Not one I'm going to be remembering 5 years down the line, but overall very well done.

I actually thought it was well translated from the book.  I never want a movie to be an exact translation.  Some things just don't make sense in modern day culture.  Simply calling it a "bacteria" doesn't fit with modern times.  It being self inflicted the way it was was a nice touch.  Getting rid of straight zombies, which has been done numerous times because of the effect of the book and original film, was a nice touch I thought.

The ending in the book was fantastic, though.  It would have been nice to see that in the film, but even that I didn't think they did bad.  I don't want to spoil the movie, but I don't think they copped out on the ending at all.

Talking to the dog, parroting the words to Shrek and screaming at the woman over the bacon is supposed to show Will Smiths new found range?  Lame.
spoilers ^^

Did you see the crawler on the 2009 t.v. telecast with Shaq announcing his retirement in 2010?

I wouldn't say that was much of a spoiler.  The reviews and commercials pretty much point to a virus of some type wiping out man kind.

A real spoiler was this guy on a hip hop message board who posted the ending in a thread title.  I am not going to go see it cuz I know what happens already..sucks.  Not that I was much into it before hand but it's been a while since I've gone to the movies.

Btw Reality..have you got yourself a hi def dvd player yet?

reality: keeping the audience captivated while working in a green room without any other humans on screen is one of the hardest things an actor can do.  If you can't see that, we'll have to just agree to disagree.  You seem to have an axe to grind with Smith, not so much with this movie.

We will have to agree to disagree.  I loved him in Hitch.  Liked him in MIB 1 opposite overated Tommy Lee Jones.
In a serious role like Legend/Last Man on Earth/Omega Man called for he was a miscast all the way.  His softcore wrapper MTV/Fresh Prince did not fit at all.  When he tried to be intense, ie ranting over the bacon and eggs and screaming at the Latino gal who found him or parroting the Shrek scenes he was sub high school drama class.

Sidenote db and any viewers did you see how ripped Smith was in that chin ups scene?  Wow!!  That was Terrell Owens/Karl Malone ripped.  Not sure if Smith is on growth substances, either way props to his work out routine.

Yeah.  we'll just have to disagree.  I thought Smith did a tremendous job of showing someone trying to keep up hope while simultaneously losing his grip on his sanity.

And yeah, Smith was ridiculously ripped.  Of course, when you essentially get paid for your workout routine, it's easier to get that way.

I've also thought Will Smith was an over rated acting hack who only got on TV because of his crappy rap career.  You may not think much of the Fresh Prince show but to me that show proved the guy has a ton of talent and was a legit actor.  I thought he was excellent in MIB, but that was more of his cheeky persona than anything so not much of a stretch.  I didn't much buy him in Independence Day but I thought he was pretty good in Enemy of the State and I Robot.  He's decent, he's no Ed Norton or Forrest Wittaker but he's also not a Kenau Reeves or Ben Affleck.  IMO he's got as much talent as Tom Cruise, Jamie Fox and Bruce Willis, he just needs the right script.  I used to think Denzel and Brad Pitt were pretty crappy actors untill they got in the right movies.

This brings up a topic I very often wonder about.  How hard is it for a "Leading Man" to really show his acting chops.  Is that even what they're being paid for?  I mean obviously you pay your dues with crappy bit roles, cheesy city theatre, etc. until you get lucky enough in a couple of auditions to get into movies and hopefully are noticed by someone.  But once you've made it and are now in movies as a leading man, how much does your acting really deteriorate.

Personally I think there are a number of "Leading Men" actors out their who either have deteriorated badly or simply are given roles for who they are.  Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, and Kevin Costner just to name a few.  I mean Costner sometimes doesn't even bother with Voice Coaching for roles that call for an accent.  Jack Nicholson is pretty much "Jack Nicholson" in every movie he is in.  Denzel used to be one of the best actors on the planet (Devil in a Blue Dress, Malcolm X, Fallen, Training Day), now his acting isn't anything to write home about (Deja Vu, American Gangster, Man on Fire).

Conversely I think the BEST actors are "Character" actors.  These are the guys that fill those supporting roles and sometimes leading roles that just literally meld into their character where you honestly have a hard time telling who they are movie to movie.  It took Pirates of the Caribbean for my wife to put a face to Johnny Depp even though he's been in (and been great) in like 40 movies before hand.  "Character" actors like Kevin Spacey, Daniel Day-Lewis, Christopher Walken, Michael Caine, Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Platt are guys I respect immensely but hardly guys who can carry a blockbuster on their own

There are of course guys who used to be "Character" actors and through sheer success have become their own personality.  Like Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, etc.  Which is where the conundrum comes in--as soon as someones personality becomes SO HUGE, they overwhelm every character they play, and they can't do what they're paid for (pretending to be someone else) at the highest level anymore.

Will Smith obviously is a "Leading Man" Actor and so I think beyond just his ability, that will hamper his performance for guys like Reality, I think.  I will say that what he lacks in talent, he makes for in effort.  The scene when he had to put down his dog was emotional and very well-done.  But Like I said earlier, is 'Acting' really what Will Smith is being paid for or is he being paid to show up and be essentially Will Smith as the only man in New York?  I mean replace Will Smith with say, Terrence Howard (someone who I think is twice the actor), is "I Am Legend" even half as successful?

Interesting question or am I two olives short of a greek salad?

I tend to agree with Derek that basically doing a one man show for most of the movie demonstrated Will Smith's abilities as an actor to a rather high degree, I personally thought he did an excellent job with what had to be a difficult script given the totally depressing nature of the movie. However, I was convinced of his acting ability in The Pursuit of Happyness (yes, that is really the way they spelled it). I personally think anyone who questions his acting abilty is a little daft, but that is just me.

I also tend to agree to a point with Skander's assertion that character actors get nowhere near enough props for what they are required to accomplish in a movie, suppport the lead and mold a role totally out of personality whereas leading men are expected to push the personality that made them famous in the first place, exceptions being men like Marlon Brando, Robert Deniro, Roberet Duvall or Clark Gable (yeah I'm old), men who studied a script and then created a charactor rather than make their own person the charactor, Tom Cruise is the perfect exapmple of the most over rated actor ever (along with Ben Afflick), pathetic little men trying to be men they are not. Costner has that potential but you can tell he fights that bad acting trait, Open Range was brilliantly acted IMO. Men like Nicholson or Willis must inject themselves into a role simply because that is what movie going lemmings want, but make no mistake, both of these men and others like them are superb actors, they just fill a different kind of niche. Up and coming actors like Matt Damon have good skills but are as yet too young IMO to be mentioned in the same breath as the greats, like Nicholson, Brando, Deniro, Gable, and the like, and no, Pacino does not belong there, another actor I think slept with the right people to get to a place he does not belong.

Great subject, even if my old school choices may not resonate with you young pups.

IMO Ed Norton is as good as anyone of the guys you mentioned.

Brando was the best I've ever seen at being both a lead actor and a character actor.

I think Skandery is on to something.  Being that I  have friends in LA who want to 'write screen plays'  for a living  ::)  you often hear them talking about who they have in mind for things they write.  So what happens is the character somewhat morphs into say a Will Smith or Bruce Willis before those guys even get approached (or if they ever do).  What they do is they write a part that is similar to another part that actor played in another movie.  Perfect example is Jack Nicholos.  How many times has he been cast as a crazy, one flew over the coo coo's nest/The Shinning type character?  Sure it fit on Batman when he was the Joker but how many times since then has he been that character?

And Fresh Prince of Bel Air was not a stretch for Will Smith.  He had been that Fresh Prince persona long before the TV show.  If you check out his old music and videos you will see that his acting on the show was not really acting.  He was playing himself.  In his defense that is how the show was to be written with a small twist to it.

But...since we are talking leading men, does that also mean box office draw?  Norton is definately a leading man but not someone I would consider a box office draw.

What do you guys think of Will Ferrel?  I think the guy who was villian in Die Hard 3, he's also in the Harry Potter movies is a very good character actor.  Also, I've always thought Tom Hanks was a fundamentally sound actor but nothing spectacular.

The best actors I can think of are Dep, Norton and Whittaker, I just love his short appearance in the color of money, ever since then I've been a fan.  The other guy I think is a terrific actor is the leading guy in Salvador, he's been in some cheese since then but I really like him as an actor.  He was also good as the loser boyfriend of Sharon Stone in Casino, nobody takes an arse kicking on screen like him.  Also the guy in Leaving Las Vegas and Peggie Sue Got Married is really good.  Also one of the best of the best IMO is the guy who was in Seven with Pitt.  Unforgiven, Lean on Me and Shawshank Redemption were great performances, speaking of which Tim Robbins is also awesome.  In the rigth role Robin Williams is terrific, he is either really a creepy scary guy or a very good actor, I don't know which.

As many legends as there were in the God Father movies, IMO Robert Duval outshinned them all.
