SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Tuesday that the team plans to retire the No. 6 worn by Avery Johnson.

Johnson, now coach of the Dallas Mavericks, played 16 seasons in the NBA and spent all or part of 10 seasons with the Spurs. He was with the team for its 1999 title run.

"We're going to retire A.J.'s jersey for all the obvious reasons," Popovich said. "He's been very, very important to the history of San Antonio basketball. He's a championship player. He was a wonderful leader while he was here."

The retirement ceremony for the number worn by the 5-foot-11 guard will take place Dec. 22 when the Spurs play the Los Angeles Clippers, the Mavericks said Tuesday.

"He deserves it, it's going to be a fun night," Popovich added.

A few notes about this lifelong CBAer...

Johnson is the Spurs' all-time assists leader, with 4,474. He also ranks No. 5 in games played (644), No. 7 in points scored (6,486) and No. 5 in steals (712).

To each his own, a player may mean alot more to a franchise than his actual worth in the NBA.  There are still a couple of Avery-like CBA quality PG starting in the NBA today, Snow and some other I guy who's name I can't think of right now, and neither is/was a "floor general" like Avery was, not to mention he's a super class guy.

I guess the Lakers should consider retiring Sedale Threatt's number as well.

"Not his story"

"My people's culture was strong, it was pure"
"And if not for that white greed"
"It would've endured"

If the Lakers need to retire a number that should have been retired long ago, they should consider retiring MICHAEL COOPER'S number 21.  Those 5 Laker championships in the '80's?  Only three players played on all 5 teams - Kareem, Magic, and Michael Cooper.

Rony Turiaf is wearing the number now...and at least that's okay.  I HEARTILY objected when Kareem Rush chose that number to wear.

2:1 ratio with 2 against, 1 for until it closed.

About 100 votes.  Just a small survey amoungst real Spurs fans.
I think about 20 more voted "who cares".

Granted, he contributed to the Spurs 1st title.  But the 4-0 skunking by the Lakers in the "quit" year 2001 erased any of Averys leadership mantra.  And his actions in the 4-3 2006 nightmare ie trying to defend Jason Fairy for his shot to the nuts of Findawg.  Inexcusable.

Props to AJ!

In a tribute to Randy...

Not quite sure why they want to retire the jersey of --a CBA player.  What's next?  They are going to retire the mop of the kid who cleaned the floors at Staples the three years they won the championship?  I HARDLY find this WORTH posting about Lurker.
