Windows for stars
« on: April 02, 2007, 10:30:36 AM »
How long is the window period to win for current NBA supers?
Win and be the teams MVP.
Who will be, will any be the next Karl Malone in workout physical longevity?

Shaq i think we all can agree is not gonna be another Karl Malone.  But how long will Riles extend him?  Of course most Laker posters claim Shaq was done in 2004. :D  Especially the intelligent ones.  With Wade out, the 9 game win streak has since faded.

Tim Duncan  Showed signs of slowing last year but then put on another MVP type playoff performance.  Plantar facia seems to be gone.  Can Duncan do another MVP playoffs and for how many years?  I think he could have 3 more years but with Poppycocks smallball could also burn out next year.

KG If slightly slowing down means cranking out another 22/13 and leading the team in assists, i will take slowing down for 4 more years.   For the love of goodness free this guy.  Wolves are rightly waiting to see if they win the lotto.  If not, i would think he'll be traded for sure.  If not, he can opt out for the start of the 2008-9 season.  Still enough left to title?  Absolutely, and not as just some role player either.  KG has 3 more years of KG ball.

Dirk  Should have 4 more years.  Keeps twisting ankle, but keeps recovering.  I think the tendons are now permastetched and unaffected.

Kobe  the Kobester has put 2003-4s injury completely behind him.  While the Kobester is high mileage it appears these are freeway miles and his workout and self centered drive should keep the Kobester at this level for 4 more years with only slight drop off.  Bynums development and Manu joining the Lakers and mentoring him on team ball (should the Spurs fold) would enhance Kobe Xs10.
Is the Kobster our Karl Malone longevity pick?

Al Iverson  Energizer bunny keeps on going but Denver and MarshMellow are not the answer.  I look for dropoff in two years but who knows.

Vince Carter  the best functional dunker in the NBA.  (true game situations not just breakaways)
Is Vince reborn, or is it just contract year hype?  Said to like Orlando.  That would be a great fit.  If Orlando, pencil Vince in for at least 2 more top years.

Yao are you kidding?  This young buck has 8 more years in him.  Signed the extension with Van Grunty tho.  Badd career move, could be done in 3.

There is not a single poster on this board that said Shaq was done the year he left the Lakers.  In fact I believe we said he had about 2 years to go before you saw a sharp drop off.

Funny but Miami was just about convinced the title was in the bag once "The Big by Large by Fat" arrived in town, but as we Laker fans know, his presense guarentee's nothing but windfall profits at the local Burger King.

Do i really need to post them all?

LOL

That one doesn't even say that Shaq's career is over in 2004.  It is saying that having Shaq in town doesn't guarentee anything.

I think I am going to start a no poster left behind movement for our disadvantage poster...

So you Laker poster said Shaq would play for the 2005 Miami Heat team.  That is deep.

If it will keep you busy then go right ahead.  It might be amusing to see the editing that goes on as well as the various responses.   ;D

Iverson is a little less than 1 year older than KG.  AI was in college for 1 year, KG went straight to the NBA from H.S.

Kobe is younger than both of them.

Typically players peak in their 6th or 7th year and then plateau and slowly decline, but that was for players who had gone through 4 years of College Ball.

These three are continuing to improve as players- they have ample experience in the league and still have healthy bodies in spite of their injuries.

AI has at least 3 years left barring injury.  Kobe should have at least 5.   By this I mean they will still be at the top of their game physically, with even greater experience and understanding of the game.

They all have a decent sized window, but out of these three who is the best off?  AI actually has a star teamate along side of him, something neither KG or Kobe enjoy at the moment.  Even though the Lakers have a slightly better record, IMO Denver has passed them as a contending team.  Poor KG- he really deserves better- I'd hate to see him finish his career without a real shot at a title.  At least Kobe already has rings and AI had a shot.

I think VC is done, or at least no longer at as high a level a player as he once was.  NJ is not a good team, considering the names they have, it implies that they have each lost a step. VC can still play at a pretty high level, but if he's smart he will accept a lesser role and salary with a team that has a legit shot at the title.  Maybe the Spurs should take a run at him.

It is real crazy that AI is still going strong too though.  His body has taken a beating since he came into the league and it really hasn't been much of a factor.  He is almost like some kind of wolverine-basketball player hybrid.  I thought for certain he would slow down by now but he has not.

While the talent is more athletic coming in and all the facilities are top notch for these players...they are also playing with more athletic talent.  That has to be factored in when thinking about how long younger players may last.  One would argue that Michael Jordan saw less athletic guards (but smarter guards) and Karl Malone didn't quite see the level of talent at the 4 that is of KG, Tim Duncan, Amare, Brand, Dirk caliber for all of his career....

If MN scores the lotto #1 or #2, KG stays.
IMO no way he extends.
No way MN lets him walk.
Otherwise....
KG is really going to a new team before next seasons trade deadline.
This new team will hopefully give KG a title chance.

VC I would welcome.  Unless lurker doesn't want an athletic 3.  Since Spurs have Bowen.  lurker?

I would rather have a player that plays defense than a dunking specialist.  Besides the simple fact that VC plays the 2 spot and then you would have to cut Manu's minutes.

Dunking ability doesn't = athletic.  If you ever see VC play defense then call me.  It will be the first time.

I totally agree lurker and VC is not my ideal 3 candidate at 6'6".  But he certainly is athletic and many of his dunks are functional, meaning he fakes out the D and/or jams in traffic.  Not just open court dunks.  24/5/4 isn't all accomplished on hype on a low scoring Jersey team.
As to his D, i would say i am putting a call in to you.   Previous years, no.  This seasons contract year for VC i have seen mucho effort from him.

Now be honest.  2006 and 2007 Spurs playoffs with VC?  Or with Findawg?
2008 same Q.

Andris Biedrins the 6'11" 21 year old from Russia is interesting.
Probably not fast enough to be considered an athletic 3 but has mobility for sure.
