D-fish to sign with Golden State
« on: July 15, 2004, 07:13:33 PM »

While the Lakers got the most important member of their starting five back on Thursday, they also lost one of their clutchest playoff performers.

 Fisher

Point guard Derek Fisher has agreed to a six-year, $37 million deal with the Golden State Warriors, agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN Insider Chad Ford. The deal is for the Warriors' full mid-level exception.

Golden State's decision is intriguing. Just last summer, the Warriors signed point guard Speedy Claxton to a multi-year deal and traded for point guard Nick Van Exel, who has two years and more than $24 million remaining on his contract. The Lakers, Heat, Rockets and Sonics also pursued Fisher during this offseason. Seattle reportedly pushed hard for Fisher after losing Brent Barry to the Spurs. Fisher, looking to re-establish himself as a starter, apparently crossed the Lakers off his list after Gary Payton announced he would return.

Fisher averaged 7.1 points and 2.3 assists a game for the Lakers last season in a reserve role behind Gary Payton, but hit a number of big shots for them in the postseason, including the dramatic buzzer-beating fadeaway that beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Fisher has spent his entire eight-year career with the Lakers after being selected 24th overall in the 1996 draft out of Arkansas-Little Rock. Prior to last season, he had averaged in double figures for the three previous seasons, with a career-high of 11.4 points in 2000-01 -- the second of the Lakers three consecutive championship seasons.

Excuse me, but how stupid is this?  Derek Fisher has been a decent NBA player, but 6 years and $37 million?  He is 30 years old now, and his numbers have dropped for 3 straight years.  His best season was 2001 when he played only 20 games.  For his career he is
7.4 pts
3 ast
2 rebounds
1 steal
This guy is and always has been AT BEST MEDIOCRE, and he is now 30 on the downside of his career and he gets a 6 year deal for $6 million plus per year.  I am sorry but that is just plain stupid.

Guys, have you forgotten what PJ has been able to do to the careers of mediocre players?

Let me list a few:
   Luc Longley
   Bill Wennington
   Steve Kerr
   Craig Hodges
   Caffey
   And now, Derek Fisher.

The list goes on and on and on.  PJ had a tremendous ability for recognizing players ability and integrating players strengths into the system.  He made a WHOLE lot of mediocre players look great -- and then the next team they signed with were SORELY disappointed!

My question is, can they add a period to Derek's number so that he can be .4 in GS?

For once I have to say Reality has the correct perception on this one.

The warriors were a better opportunity for playing time.

Now the question's who's to blame that he hasn't gotten it.  Speedy (although he performed well last year when Van Exel went down), or management (with stupid trades and signings bringing in Van Exel and Fisher).

I think your "allegiance" has clouded your perception.

At the time that Speedy signed, it was a GREAT opportunity for him.  An opportunity to be the starting PG -- something that was VERY clear that he wasn't going to get to do in SA.  Then after he signs, GS goes and trades for NVE -- it wasn't Speedy's fault that they did this -- I still think that Speedy is a quality PG and hope he gets his chance to start (I think LA has a spot open if he wants it, lol).

I think that anyone who stated that Speedy should have remained a Spurs bench PG was rather "prejudiced" in their statements.  Surely, even YOUR clouded perception abilities can see that.

I actually have the same feelings right now for Kareem Rush -- I would like to see him stay a Laker for selfish reasons but I would also like to see what he could do with a starting job somewhere.  I think he has that kind of potential.  I'd hate to see him go to another team -- but I'd like to see him get the opportunity to develop -- something that he ISN'T going to do with the Lakers playing behind Kobe.
