OT - Best cheesesteak in Philly
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:06:34 PM »
I'm flying to Philly 2morrow and our guide is going to be a day behind so I need recommendations for the best cheesesteak in Philly, preferably not too far from the airport put we would be willing to drive a little 1/2 hour maybe.

Two options:
Best cheesesteak PERIOD
Best cheesesteak within 1/2
Best cheesesteak in a safe neighborhood.

THANKS!

This could be an interesting debate - i know many who frown on the popular 'tourist' destinations...i always liked the local ones on the main line...personally i like real cheese on my cheese steak and not cheese whiz and real pizza in narberth made AMAZING cheese fries as well - but that ain't 30 minutes from the airport :)

So. Philly is close enough, so you can go to any of the famous ones,  but the best according to the Inquirer and the Sports Radio Station is John's Roast Pork; Here's their url which provides directions:
http://tinyurl.com/6fd9hn

It's on Snyder Ave. which is close to the Sports Complex.  Not sure about the neighborhood, but since the place is only open til 3:00PM, it should be fine.

I have not eaten there, I'm hardly ever in S. Philly except to see a game when the place is closed.

Tony Lukes is the one that gets my $7.  Better than pats and geno's, and I never liked Jim's.

Yup, already put the address in my GPS, I'm flying out in a couple of hours.  I figured Pats and Ginos were for tourists so I wanted to eat where the locals do.

Thanks everyone....oh wait....it might suck so I'll wait till later to give "thanks".  ;D

Tony Luke was in one of those Bobby Flay throw down shows.  That DID look pretty tasty.
On the set of Walker Texas Ranger Chuck Norris brought a dying lamb back to life by nuzzling it with his beard. As the onlookers gathered, the lamb sprang to life. Chuck Norris then roundhouse kicked it, killing it instantly. The lesson? The good Chuck giveth, and the good Chuck, he taketh away.

So WOW, which place did you go to, and did you prefer it to an In and Out burger?

First night in Philly we went to the Liberty Bell and the guided tour across the street.  We then drove to Pat and Geno's and I was not impressed with either.  I ordered in Spanish at Geno's  ;D  We did not go to Tony Lukes because of time constraints but we went to some other place out in Hatrysville (Big River or Wiskey River restaurant)? The cheesestake was 10X better there than at Pat and Genos.  I asked about Tony Lukes and a couple of the locals had heard of it but we never made it out there.

Cheesesteak is good but doesn't really compare well to stuff I'm used to in SoCal.  Carne asada burritos, tacos or tortas are much better.  I will say I had some great pizza at some hole in the walls that blow away any pizza joint in LA.

Yes - West coast pizza is terible - and quoting someone right above you regarding comparing burritos to cheesesteaks

Given the choice, "asada" wins EVERY time.  Clear enough?
