Thanks for the link.  I'll agree with Williams being the third best player in the PG group.  Whether he is a true PG is another question, but in the group he was placed he is a pretty strong third IMO.  Interesting, if we sign our own RFA's we will have the top ranked PF, SF and third ranked PG in free agency this year.  Not bad shopping.

Louis Williams is far from a finished product.

Add the fact that he appears to respond very well to the coaching that he's received to his athletic gifts and basketball pedigree and you might see a player that looks to be the biggest bargain of this free agent class a few years down the road.

I think that Lou's next contract will be a huge one, this summer's deal (assuming it's a multi-year one) will be a good one when it's looked back upon.

I don't think Williams can ever handle full time PG duties, but as a part-time PG part-time SG, he's a lot better than most backup PGs.  He may not be able to fully run an offense, but he can make his own if he needs to.  Other things from that series of articles:

THE SUPERSTAR

I'd forgotten how good Elton Brand was. When I was writing last week's column on the Clippers signing Baron Davis, I looked at the value of Brand and Davis as a duo and was surprised by how valuable Brand was during the 2006-07 season. At 17.3 WARP, he rated sixth in the league. The previous year, he was third and a legitimate MVP candidate. Brand is 29, so while his future is not as bright as those of the top restricted free agents, his value is unlikely to slip considerably over the course of his next contract. Brand played well enough in the month of April to largely offset concerns about his recovery from his torn Achilles. In my book, Brand is the top free agent on the market.

Also, Iggy had the best WARP and win% of the SFs, and his WARP was 5th best on the market behing Brand (if you count his 06-07 season), Davis, Calderon, and Smith.

If there's anything that Lou likes, it's PT.  He knows he's not going to outplay Andre at the 2 spot, so that leaves him to chase Miller out of the starting job at point.  As it is, he gets most of the duties in the 2nd and 4th quarters, running as a shooting guard with minor ball-handling responsibilities.

Based on potential, he should be ranked higher than Davis or Calderone.  He would be heading into his Junior season in College this year, so he is quite young and still developing his skills.  It is clear that he has extraordinary talent to have contributed as much as he has already.

The Sixers of the past few years were not a team that could have been run very well, by a point anyway.  No inside targets to pass to, uneven shooters on the wings... And then you expect a rookie to magically turn into Magic Johnson or Steve Nash and push the team to a new level with his passing.

Andre Miller didn't have too many 10 assist games last season.  The team wasn't amenable to that style of play.  The Sixer formula was high-pressure defense and rebounding, and fast-break offense. Their half-court offense was never a strength, and even though they made improvement last season, it was never good enough to chase a team like Detroit out of the playoffs.  Everyone knew the Sixers couldn't shoot from outside with a high enough percentage, and it's outside shooters hitting open shots that gives point guards easy assists.

This season, with a real go-to man in the middle (Brand), a shot-blocking center (Dalembert), two very fast athletic wing man, (Igoudala & Young) a point should have ample opportunities to both run a fast-break and run a half-court offense with very high efficiency.

Whether it's Miller or Williams running the point, the team should be much improved in the half-court, which could easily translate into more than 10 wins improvement over last season.  The Sixers filled their two glaring weak spots by adding Brand. Now they have a real post up presence in the middle, and one of the most athletic twos in the game. A 60 win season isn't out of the question, and neither is a deep run in the playoffs, past the second round.

What is clear is that Williams is by no means a finished product.  If other teams had more cap room, they might have taken a run at Lou.  It is very fortunate for the Sixers that they aren't getting raided by other teams.  Getting Igoudala and Williams without much competition for their services is a huge break for the team.

We won't know how good Williams will be yet. He seems to have all the physical skills to be a superb point guard.  Another year of working on his handle and his passing and finishing and they'll be talking about Lou along with CP3 and Deron Williams.

Marc Stein from ESPN reporting and postulating that GS will make a run at Lou Williams:
