OT: Iran and the Draft
« on: August 15, 2007, 12:09:33 PM »
It's a little slow around here so I felt this could be brought up and not take away from debating basketball.....

No wonder I've been hearing officials talking about the draft lately. I assumed that Bush would go into Iran before he left office but I was hoping someone would at least try to stop him. The clock is ticking Democrats....

Since MSNBC couldn't provide any real break down and anything but scratch the surface reporting here is an additional link

I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on this.  I am VERY frustrated personally.  As every day passes I feel as if I want to give up on the idea of Democracy because the people's voice really doesn't matter.

Westcoast it does matter what you think.  This is your country.  These people work for US!

I too have expected us to go into Iran,  I was somewhat surprised they didn't do it, when the Iranian Navy captured British sailors.  IMO, they realized that they couldn't attack Iran with Iraq so unstable.

They still have to seal up Iraq- not make it an independent state, but one with a reasonable amount of stability and no-one kidnapping officials or blowing up infrastructure.  To start a war with that going on in your "safe zones" is impossible.

Once that is accomplished they can attack Iran.  It appears unlikely, however, that they will be able to stabilize Iraq in time to do this during Bush's Presidency.  I may be wrong about this- Bush and Cheney may be so desparate to get into Iran that they will try to manipulate events to make a case to institute the draft, and get enough troops into the field to manage both tasks.

If it really is true that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is funding Iraqi terrorists and the Taliban, then Bush can make a much stronger case to the UN, but they must have proof, or China and Russia will continue to stonewall.

It appears the domestic resistance to the US is weakening significantly in Iraq.  The surge is actually working and success there, plus solid proof of Iranian involvement could enable the US to move up it's timetable.

The deal is who will control the oil comming out of Iran.  The Russians and Chinese may not like dealing with the Iranian govt., but they definitely don't want US oil companies controlling the shots!  The only way it happens is if they convince China and India that they have a better chance of getting a stable supply of oil from that region if the US is in Teheran.

Russia recently had a terrorist bombing on their train from St. Petersbugh to Moscow.  Most likely Chechen rebels, but if the US can show ties to Iran...

There was a high level meeting between political and military leaders in Australia last week:  http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSSYD19272220070814

Unbelivable that it wasn't covered in the US press!
