What place did your Champion come from?
« on: March 01, 2007, 10:22:04 AM »
In furtherance of teams with the best All Time Reg Seasons who did or did not become Champs thread...
http://www.phillyarena.net/forums/index.php?topic=3606.0

What has been the Champs placement in regular season won/loss standings?
Best record (clear first or tied) won 30 of the 60 championships.

Second best (clear or tied) won 17 of the 60 championships.

Third best won four championships.

Fourth best also won four championships.

Fifth best won two championships.

Just three champions have finished in a place lower than fifth:
2004 Detroit Pistons (6th, 54-28)
1978 Washington Bullets (tied 8th, 44-38)
1995 Houston Rockets (tied 10th, 47-35)
It should be noted that the Rockets and Pistons both made midseason acquisitions of All-Star caliber players (Clyde Drexler for Houston and Rasheed Wallace for Detroit)

Worst record to ever win the title? The 1978 Washington Bullets. Their winning percentage was just 53.7% for a record of 44-38.

Since 1968, the first season to feature the 82 game schedule, the average winning percentage is .720 which translates to a 59-23 mark. As before, the average placement for this record is second best in the league. (The 2005 Spurs met both criteria exactly)

Am i talking to myself here or do any of you care about this topic?  I know zig will gobble this up.
Okay this covers everyone watching NBA playoffs past and present, from Rolando Blackmans great grandpa to Skanderys newborn who crawls up and looks at the t.v.s twinkling lights.

Short highlights, the Pistons 6th place to Title in 2004 broke up an 8 year run of Champs being either 1st or 2nd.
A 1 year return to 2nd (Spurs 2005) and bam immediately thereafter, the Miami Heat became 5th place Champs.
So you 3rd-6th and even 7th and 8th+ place teams don't give up yet.
Also you fortunate prognosticaters like WayOutWest, who, thanks to a MortalGnob brain fart correctly predicted Dallas as last years West Conf reps, it aint over yet you Dallas TwoPeater predictors.

Figure 1 is W-L regular season record, 2nd W-L is playoff record, 3rd W-L is combined regular season and playoffs, 4th is point differential.
