Really bad contracts
« on: February 25, 2005, 02:17:52 AM »
Derek said he felt Kenny Thomas had a bad contract, making him nearly untradeable.  Started me thinking on who really has bad contracts.  Here is my list

Raef LaFrentz  -  $45.4 next 4 years
Eric Snow  -  $25.5 next 4 years
Eric Dampier  -  $60.5 next 6 years
Kenyon Martin - $81.9 next 6 years
Baron Davis  -  $57.8 next 4 years
Adonal Foyle  -  $44.5 next 5 years
Derek Fisher  -  $32.0 next 5 years
Juwan Howard  -  $32.0 next 4 years
Micheal Dickerson  -  $24.7 next 3 years
Brian Grant  -  $30.0 next 2 years
Brian Cardinal -  $32.5 next 5 years
Pau Gasol  -  $86.3 next 6 years
Wally Szczerbiak  -  $46.0 next 4 years
Allan Houston  -  $40 next 2 years
Stephon Marbury  -  $76.8 next 4 years
Jerome Williams  -  $20.0 next 3 years
Malik Rose - $20.0 next 3 years
Hidayet Turkoglu  -  $33.9 next 4 years
Theo Ratliff  -  $30.0 next 3 years
Zach Randolph  -  $82.4 next 6 years
Radoslav Nesterovic  -  $30.2 next 4 years
Jalen Rose  -  $32.6 next 2 years
Etan Thomas  -  $32.0 next 5 years

Disagree with any, or want to add any to the list.
A third-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the majority. A second-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the minority. A first-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking.

A quotation is a handy thing to have about, saving one the trouble of thinking for oneself.

Really bad contracts

Some of those players are second level stars.  And while some say that the max should only be given to franchise players, that's simply not the case in todays nba.  so Gasol, Davis, Martin and Randolph might be bad contracts, but I disagree that they're overpaid, since that's what the market would have commanded.

Outside of that "2nd level star" group I just listed, I disagree that Etan Thomas is a bad contract.  I love his game.

Some of these contracts are throwbacks from before the salary cap -- those contracts (Houston is a GREAT example) were given to players with little longterm regard, thankfully, less of that is happening today:

    LaFrentz
    Michael Dickerson
    Brian Grant
    Wally World
    Jerome Williams
    Turkoglu
    Eric Snow
    Jalen Rose
    Juwann Howard

Next, we have really STUPID contracts by stupid GM's:
Dampier (okay, one could argue that big men's contracts are really inflated in todays NBA)
Foyle (see above, but this guy does almost NOTHING on the court)
Martin (umm, he is getting superstar money here for ?)
Fisher (hmm, how much is his .4 shot worth? -- lol)
Cardinal (you just DON'T pay this amount of money for a role player)
Malik Rose (did his contract date back before the salary cap?  I don't think it did but his contract is a little high)
Ratliff (wow, when was this contract signed -- that's a LOT of money for a center who isn't a vital piece of your team)
Rasho (see overinflated big men contracts)

Last, we have players who are paid superstar money because they are great players but they will NEVER lift their team to success:
Gasol (a great player but is he worth this kind of money?)
Marbury (wow, $20 mill a year -- this may fall partly under #1 but this is a joke -- of course, he is playing for the right team when it comes to joke contracts)
Randolph (well, he's a 20/10 player if his team plays him the minutes but many argue that he doesn't make his team better -- and some argue that he makes his team worse)
