Minutes superstars/stars should play
« on: December 15, 2006, 11:13:20 AM »
We've all seen the injuries and yes some of them were not caused by cumulative minutes.
Or were they?

More tired you get, more chance for injury.  Book that.
So, 82 game schedule, how many minutes do you want "your" Super or star to play?

Tim Dunkar had career lows of 18/11 last year.
However when it counted, he had 32/13 and lead the team in assists with almost 4 per vs Dallas.  It should have been a big mans performance for the ages ie Mo Malone and Bob Parish in the 80s.  Instead it was the Manu fart.

Okay well back to the point.  Do you want your Super or star playing upper 30s-40 minutes in the reg season.
Or do you want him doing 30 and entering the playoffs healthy.

msc is of the opinion that these pampered multimillionaires have so much access to "healthcare" vs the old Wilts, Bill Russels and Jerry Wests that they should shut up and play.  In fact while its an MLB star, no doubt NBAers get the same pampering, check out the contract provisions agent Scott Borass recently obtained for Japanese Joe Pitcher by Redsox:

Matsuzaka's agreement includes US$8 million in escalators based on awards that would bring the total to US$60 million over six years and also includes award bonuses. Boras said the deal includes travel from Japan for the player and his family via private Red Sox plane, a personal assistant at his disposal, plus provisions for a trainer, an on call on demand masseuse, an interpreter, an assistant and housing for spring training and the regular season.

Compare this to some guy in prison on trumped up charges (it happens) and how would he or you like to be "let out" with the provision that you play 2 hours of hard hoop 4Xs a week?

Okay, that having been said, the imperfect human body is the imperfect human body.  Save for genetic freaks like Karl Malone (huge workout ethic and he shied away from any and all injury recieving contact) it seems to be a fact that cumulative minutes equals injury.
Kobe Bryant, Al Iverson, Tim Duncan etc.

Do you want your SStar playing 40 min per game in reg season?
Me?  No way.  I want 40 minutes in every playoff game (needed).
Reg season play enough to secure reasonable seed, thats it.

You can't make a blanket statement on how many minutes you want your star to play with so many different things that can happen in a season or even a single game...Everyone would love to have their star player play 32-35 minutes a night and still have the team play at a high level.  In reality only a few teams can do this like Dallas and SA.  Even sometimes then they cannot.

Most teams need their star player to play 40 minutes a game in order to get a good seed in the playoffs (or in other cases to make it period)

Just think of all the situations you cannot account for...

Injuries to key players that suck up the talent you can put on the floor.  If you are short handed you may not be able to afford to put Kobe Bryant on the bench since Lamar Odom is currently hurt.

Most star players dominate their teams offense...what if a team loses a lead or is behind and cannot score?  May need to bring the star in for 43 minutes instead of 38. (See Steve Nash)

OT?  You cannot bench your star player in OT.  What about double OT? (See PHX/NJ game last week)

Foul situations in the game, if you are light at say big men because of it.... your star player may be forced to come in.  Elson and Fabs both get into foul trouble, Duncan has to play more minutes while they sit on the bench.

If your star player is also the best defender (see Jason Kidd, Tim Duncan) they may need to stay in to keep a handle on a player or in Duncan's case the paint.
