Michael Moore with politicos
« on: June 22, 2006, 12:53:16 PM »
I just saw a snippit of it, but apparantly Moore took camera and microphone and approached Congressmen and Senators asking if they will send their sons and daughters to Iraq.   Apparantly many of them answered, but now are trying to ban Moore from showing any of the footage.

Anyone hear about this?

I remember hearing about it.  Wasn't some of it in his movie Fareinheit (sp?) 9/11?

As much as people bash Michael Moore (some of it rightfully so) he does have the weavos to ask questions and do things others are afraid of doing.  Not very many people post 9/11 would have challenged Bush the way he has out of fear of being 'unpatriotic'.

I got the impression it was more current, due to the House and Senate last week both voting down the idea troop withdrawl.  Moore and obvious point being, oh, so you don't have a-n-y of your sons or daughters over there, do you?  You're voting to keep others kids there.

That was the impression i got from the snippet.

I wonder how many clips of the Senators and Congressmen who do have children in Iraq will he show?

Proabably as many as there actually was...zero.

A nephew or nice doesn't count.

Sorry, I should have become aware of the details of the familial situations of all members of Congress before I made my assumption.

Mind telling me where you got the information?

Wasn't there one son/daughter over there at the time of Fahrenheit 9-11?  I seem to remember that being the case.

And given the age of a number of the senators, I wonder if that has something to do with it, as well.

The number may not actually have been zero (can't remember when Moore did this) but it is disturbingly low.  I say disturbing not in the sense that more people should be going to war but in rather in the sense that military duty is becoming the exlcusive province of the middle and lower classes.
This is a little something I found regarding this topic and was published in 2003.   I'm sure there are more extensive articles about it.

In addition to the above mentioned Kline, who is for the war, MN Rep Becky Lourey's son was killed in Iraq and she has been outspoken in favor of bringing the troops home.

Joe you may be right about the age of the Congressman but that misses the larger point mentioned in the article.  Fewer and fewer of the people making military decisions have any military background and in some cases (Quayle, Bush the Younger) have risen to the highest levels of government after using elitist connections to avoid combat.  That's not even considering Clinton and Cheney who never served as they had the privelege of being in college.

There an absolutely wonderful documentary entitled "Why We Fight" that touches on this subject in chilling detail.

The main thrust of the movie presents Eisenhower's Farewell Address and his obvious hesitation, almost fear, at the rapid growth of what he coined, "The Industrial-Military Complex".  It then goes on to detail the vast workings of this well-oiled machine.

The side-plot is of a New York teenage orphan and what he feels is his ONLY shot at a decent life.
"But guys like us, we don't pay attention to the polls. We know that polls are just a collection of statistics that reflect what people are thinking in 'reality'. And reality has a well-known liberal bias."

"Black people are lazy" "That's racist!!"  "I am not a racist I have alot of black friends!"

Been a while since I seen Moore's movie but I believe the politician who did have a family member in the war was his nephew or niece.

I am going to have to see if Netflix has the movie that Skand is talking about.  Sounds very interesting.  Moore's movie also lightly touched on the idea that war seems to be reserved for the less fortunate in this country.  As outlined by the woman in Detroit who is recruiting young men who are unemployed only to have her own son die in the war.  If there was one part of the movie that really said something it was that whole segment where she went from backing the military to spitting on it (in a sense).
