« on: September 09, 2005, 12:39:18 AM »
This is from about.com,
http://probasketball.about.com/od/newsrumo...season05.htmand  Recognize that all the grades of B, are shown as a smilie, so when you see one it is a B. That is something this board did.

Any opinions?

Rankings

Indiana Pacers
Chicago Bulls
Milwaukee Bucks
Cleveland Cavaliers
Washington Wizards
Philadelphia 76ers
Atlanta Hawks
Charlotte Bobcats
New Jersey Nets
Boston Celtics
New York Knicks
Detroit Pistons
Toronto Raptors
Orlando Magic

ATLANTA HAWKS (Overall Grade: B-)
Best Move: Passing on Eddy Curry.
Worst Move: Max money for Joe Johnson? To play point guard? With this team? And Steve Belkin lost HIS team because he objected? When this team goes nowhere in the next five years does he get the Hawks back?

Drafted (Grade: B+)
1. (2) Marvin Williams, SF, North Carolina
2. (31) Salim Stoudamire, PG, Arizona
2. (59) Cenk Akyol, PG, Turkey
Signed (Grade: B-)

New Rotation:
SF: Josh Smith
PF: Al Harrington
C: Pachulia
SG: Josh Childress
PG: Johnson
6th Man: Williams

BOSTON CELTICS (Overall Grade: C+)

Best Move: Stockpiling young, cheap talent in search of a diamond in the rough that the bizarro world of NBA scouting missed out on.
Worst Move: Picking Antoine Walker as the one to go instead of Paul Pierce. Who's more likely to go along with a youth movement ... the pampered pouting superstar or the guy who's learned the business the hard way by being traded around the league for two years?

Drafted (Grade: B+)
1. (18) Gerald Green, SG, High School
2. (50) Ryan Gomes, SF, Providence
2. (53) Orien Greene, PG/SG, Louisiana-Lafayette

CHARLOTTE BOBCATS (Overall Grade: B-)

Best Move: Creating an instant fan base by drafting a pair of Tar Heels. You know, it worked so well with J.R. Reid and all...

Drafted (Grade: B+)
1. (5) Ray Felton, PG, North Carolina
1. (13) Sean May, PF, North Carolina

PF: Emeka Okafor
C: Primoz Brezec
SG: Rush

6th Man: May

CHICAGO BULLS (Overall Grade: B+)

Best Move: Doing nothing. Chicago wisely maintained amicable negotiations without showing their hand, allowing the team to match a modest offer to Chris Duhon, watch Eddy Curry's market never materialize and lock up Tyson Chandler late in the game without much challenge.
Worst Move: Not addressing their screaming need for depth in the frontcourt.

Drafted (Grade: N/A)
None.

Signed (Grade: B+)
Chandler, PF (Re-signed)

6th Man: Andres Nocioni

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (Overall Grade: B+)

Best Move: Moving quickly to close a deal with Larry Hughes after Michael Redd shot them down.
Worst Move: Re-signing Zydrunas Ilgauskas for big bucks. He's a better fit somewhere else and there was no market for him.

Drafted (Grade: C)
2. (44) Martynas Andriuskevicius (via trade w/Orlando)

INDIANA PACERS (Overall Grade: A-)

Best Move: Working Ron Artest back into organized ball this summer at the Minnesota League.

1. (17) Danny Granger, SF, New Mexico

MIAMI HEAT (Overall Grade: A)

Best Move: Acquiring the unappreciated Antoine Walker to shoulder the mounting load on Dwyane Wade.
Worst Move: Adding Jason Williams to the mix, a guy who doesn't like it when the ball's not in his hands.

Drafted (Grade: A-)
1. (29) Wayne Simien, PF, Kansas

Signed (Grade: A)
Shaquille O'Neal, C (Re-signed)
Udonis Haslem, PF (Re-signed)

SG: Wade
PG: Williams

MILWAUKEE BUCKS (Overall Grade: B+)

Best Move: They broke the bank for him, but Bobby Simmons will bring some toughness to the bland Bucks.
Worst Move: Never spend franchise money on a borderline All-Star like Michael Redd.

Drafted (Grade: A)
1. (1) Andrew Bogut, C, Utah
2. (36) Ersan Ilyasova, SF, Turkey

Signed (Grade: B+)
Redd, SG (Re-signed)

New Rotation:
SF: Simmons
PF: Joe Smith
C: Bogut
SG: Redd
PG: Mo Williams
6th Man: Desmond Mason

NEW JERSEY NETS (Overall Grade: C+)
Best Move: After rescinding the trade for Shareef Abdur-Rahim (more on that later), the team moved quickly to grab Marc Jackson from division rival Philadelphia. Jackson isn't the offensive talent Abdur-Rahim is, but he won't be as needy given his ability to get to the line for his points and brings more toughness inside than SAR.
Worst Move: The Nets are a team of damaged goods with a shelf-life of 2-3 years as a top NBA team. So why get prudent and concern yourself with the health of Abdur-Rahim five years from now? And how is Jackson -- who's played more than 50 games twice in five seasons -- less of a risk?

Drafted (Grade: C+)
1. (15) Antoine Wright, SG, Texas A&M
2. (43) Mile Ilic, C, Serbia-Montenegro

Signed (Grade: B-)
Jeff McInnis, PG, Cleveland

Linton Johnson, SG/SF, San Antonio

Acquired (Grade: B-)
Jackson, PF/C, Philadelphia

Lost
Brian Scalabrine, SF, Boston
Ron Mercer, SG (Released)

New Rotation:
SF: Richard Jefferson
PF: Jackson
C: Nenad Krstic
SG: Vince Carter
PG: Jason Kidd
6th Man: Wright

NEW YORK KNICKS (Overall Grade: C+)
Best Move: Not only did the Knicks get the Suns to hand over a No. 1 pick this year, but they used it to take Nate Robinson, who lit up the Summer Leagues and will instantly become the most popular player at Madison Square Garden.
Worst Move: Jerome James parlayed one impressive Playoffs series into a sweet deal from the Knicks and a five-year paid vacation in New York.

Drafted (Grade: B  )
1. (8) Channing Frye, PF/C, Arizona
1. (21) Robinson, PG, Washington (via trade w/Phoenix)
1. (30) David Lee, SF/PF, Florida

Signed (Grade: D-)
James, C, Seattle

Acquired (Grade: C+)
Quentin Richardson, SF, Phoenix

Lost
Kurt Thomas, PF/C, Phoenix
Jerome Williams, PF (Released)

New Rotation:
SF: Tim Thomas
PF: Mike Sweetney
C: James
SG: Jamal Crawford
PG: Stephon Marbury
6th Man: Richardson

ORLANDO MAGIC (Overall Grade: D)

Best Move: We're figure the Magic told Grant Hill to spend the summer off his feet.
Worst Move: Next time you draft a guy in the Lottery, be sure to ask him if he actually wants to play in the NBA.

Drafted (Grade: C+)
1. (11) Fran Vasquez, PF/C, Spain
2. (38) Travis Diener, PG, Marquette
2. (57) Marcin Gortat, C, Poland
Signed (Grade: C)
Keyon Dooling, PG, Miami
Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje, C

Acquired (Grade: N/A)
None.

Lost
Doug Christie, SG, Dallas

New Rotation:
SF: Hill
PF: Dwight Howard
C: Kelvin Cato
SG: Steve Francis
PG: Jameer Nelson
6th Man: Hedo Turkoglu

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS (Overall Grade: B-)

Best Move: Warding off all suitors and locking down Sam Dalembert before his eyes wandered.
Worst Move: The team needs some insurance behind Chris Webber in the worst way, especially after dealing Marc Jackson away -- and to help out a division rival no less! Sorry, but it's hard not to categorize Steven Hunter's "breakout" as a byproduct of playing in Phoenix.

Drafted (Grade: C-)
2. (45) Louis Williams, SG, High School

Signed (Grade: A)
Dalembert, C (Re-signed)
Kyle Korver, SF (Re-signed)
Willie Green, SG (Re-signed)
Hunter, PF/C, Phoenix
Shavlik Randolph, SF (Undrafted rookie)
Deng Gai, PF (Undrafted rookie)

Acquired (Grade: N/A)
None.

Lost
Jackson, PF/C, New Jersey
Aaron McKie, SG/SF (Waived)

New Rotation:
SF: Korver
PF: Webber
C: Dalembert
SG: Andre Iguodala
PG: Allen Iverson
6th Man: Green

TORONTO RAPTORS (Overall Grade: C)

Best Move: Bringing in a character guy like Joey Graham who'll work his tail off from Day 1.
Worst Move: There's still too many malcontents to spoil the volatile mix so somebody better get deported soon.

Drafted (Grade: C+)
1. (7) Charlie Villanueva, PF, Connecticut
1. (16) Joey Graham, SF, Oklahoma State
2. (41) Roko Ukic, PG, Croatia
2. (58) Uros Slokar, PF, Slovenia

Signed (Grade: C)
Jose Calderon, PG, Spain
Pape Sow, PF (Re-signed)
Matt Bonner, SF/PF (Re-signed)

Acquired (Grade: N/A)
None.

Lost
Donyell Marshall, SF/PF, Cleveland
Milt Palacio, PG, Utah

New Rotation:
SF: Graham
PF: Chris Bosh
C: Rafael Araujo
SG: Morris Peterson
PG: Rafer Alston
6th Man: Jalen Rose

WASHINGTON WIZARDS (Overall Grade: B  )
Best Move: It's OK to make mistakes as long as you rectify them and Washington did just that by getting two good players (Caron Butler, Chucky Atkins) in return for monumental failure Kwame Brown.
Worst Move: The Wiz got a little stingy with Larry Hughes and they got blind-sided when he jumped ship for Cleveland.

Drafted (Grade: B-)
2. (49) Andray Blatche, SF/PF, High School

Signed (Grade: B+)
Antonio Daniels, PG/SG, Seattle
Michael Ruffin, PF, (Re-signed)

Acquired (Grade: B+)
Butler, SF, L.A. Lakers
Atkins, PG, L.A. Lakers

Lost
Hughes, SG (Cleveland)
Brown, PF/C (L.A. Lakers)
Laron Profit, SF (L.A. Lakers)

New Rotation:
SF: Caron Butler
PF: Antawn Jamison
C: Brendan Haywood
SG: Gilbert Arenas
PG: Antonio Daniels
6th Man: Etan Thomas

I disagree on the Heat ranking.  He has them drafting Wayne Simien as an A-.  Excuse me, but the guy was taken #29 overall.  Has there ever been a player drafted at 29 who has even a solid NBA starter?  Simien will have little to no impact next year, this is at best a C.

Thet added Antoine Walker, Jason Williams, and James Posey, and lost Damon Jones, Eddie Jones, and bench fodder.  Damon Jones is better than Jason Williams, and Eddie Jones is better than Posey.  I don't see how all this rates an A.

Cleveland added Larry Hughes, Donyell Marshall, and Damon Jones, and lost Jeff McInnis, and Desagna Diop.  Excuse me, but that an A+.  In fact if there was a grade higher than an A they would get it on these moves.

I do agree with Indiana at #2.  Jasikevisus will be a very solid PG, and Danny Granger was one of the better picks ion the draft.  They only lost one player that mattered, Reggie Miller.

I would agree that Toronto and Orlando had the worst offseasons in the East, no question.  The only issue here is if you are going to rate the Lakers as a D, then these 2 teams should get F's and not C's.  They both had much worst offseasons than the Lakers.

Actually Parker was drafted at #28, not #29.  This was one of the years when Minnesota didn't have a #1 pick.

Last 10 picks at #29
David Harrison
Josh Howard
Steve Logan
Trenton Hassell
Mark Madsen
Leon Smith
Nazr Mohommad
Serge Zwikker
Travis Knight
Corey Alexander

Based upon that group of players could anyone say that Wayne Simien should be considered an A draft pick?

You said "ever" right?

Where was Vlade and Cambell drafted?  Could have sworn they were at the bottom but that might have been when there were fewer teams in the league.

And from that list Mohammed & Howard are turning into legitimate starters.  Not to mention some second rounders who have succeeded.

But in ziggy's defense these players are the exception to the rule....his point is very valid.  One single late first round pick is not deserving of a high grade.

I would argue that Josh Howard *IS* a solid NBA starter right now, and Nazr *IS NOT*, yet.

Nazr happens to play in a system where his limited skills are put to great use and his weaknesses are hidden.

But like Lurker, I concede that Ziggy's point does stand...drafting Simien shouldn't be an A.  And it seems that whoever wrote this article has a hard-on for Antoine Walker.  He bashes Boston for getting rid of him and lauds Miami for taking him.

I was thinking the same sort of thing when reading the western conference in regards to Finley.  Mavs were lauded for releasing him & Spurs were shot down for signing him.  Guy must have lost a lot of money betting on the Mavs in the playoffs.

Where was Vlade and Cambell drafted?  Could have sworn they were at the bottom but that might have been when there were fewer teams in the league.
PJ Brown was drafted #29 in 1992, Toni Kukoc #29 in 1990, Vinnie Del Negro #29 in 1988.

Elden Campbell was #27 in 1990, Vlade #26 in 1989.

So I will amend my statement, and say that in the last 20 years there has been maybe 5 decent picks at #29, the rest have been BUSTS.  Wayne Simien has a 75% probability of being a bust, and a 25% chance of being a quality NBA player.

His reasoning on Dallas was that they saved a lot of money releasing Finley.  I can agree with that, but Finley is still a good NBA player, and no way Dallas is better with Doug Christie at 10% of Finley's salary, than they were with Finley.

As far as SA, how can signing Finley for just a few million not be described as anything but a huge improvement for SA?  $ for $ Finley will be one of the best players in the league.
